Tracking 2012 Class Offers

Homer, I would love to get some good Hawkeye news one of these days. Have you heard any rumors of guys that are strong leans, or anybody that might become a Hawkeye soon?

Nope ... I have no vibe about Iowa landing guys in the immediate future. However, I anticipate that we'll see a REALLY NICE recruiting spurt in June.

Guys like Ruben Lile (MI), Laron Taylor (MI), and Anthony Morgan (TX) reportedly like Iowa ... however, I don't think that any of those guys are yet in a hurry to commit. Often guys who have early interest in Iowa bide their time hoping for offers closer to home from comparable schools ... however, they often wait too long and lose their 'ship because Iowa gets commits from guys before them.

When the summer-camp circuit comes, I look for IC West's Rogers to get a long look and possibly get an offer ... and I think that he's a high-quality guy who'd become a Hawk if given a chance. A knock on Rogers is that while he's a high quality athlete ... he's also going to be a "project" at whatever position he plays in college. That's part of the reason why I think that Iowa would be a perfect fit for him. I like him at safety ... however, he'd probably have potential at WR too.

I also anticipate that we'll probably see at least one in-stater to jump on the radar during summer camp, get an offer, and then commit.

I like Iowa's chances with Darboh ... however, I think that he will take his time to make a decision.

Iowa has A LOT of offers out to quality guys in Missouri, Illinois, and Ohio. Those are each states where we traditionally have some success recruiting and we've developed some good relationships with high-school coaches there. As a result, I think that we'll land some of top targets there. We obviously won't land them all ... however, we'll still land a number of then. And, what's awesome is that the guys who we've offered are guys who are at the top of our recruiting board. Thus, whenever we get commits from the those guys ... that's always a VERY GOOD thing!

I'll admit that the fact that Iowa underperfomed a bit (by our standards) will impact our recruiting a little bit. However, I also think that the Iowa coaches have converged on a highly successful recruiting strategy. Furthermore, Iowa still won a bowl game against a high-quality opponent ... and that still carries some recruiting sway.

Thus, I'm actually pretty "bullish" when it comes to my expectations for Iowa's 2012 recruiting class.

I also think that Coach Wilson's renewed success recruiting the east coast (i.e. New Jersey and Maryland) will continue to bear fruit. I think that we'll continue to have a legit shot landing some of those guys and that's a great thing considering how rich the recruiting grounds are there. Furthermore, what further helps our cause is that Rutgers has been a little "down" lately and Maryland and Pitt are both currently relative "unknowns."

While I can't be the bringer of immediate "exciting news," hopefully I've gotten you a bit more excited about the promise for the 2012 recruiting class. Besides, you also have to remember that the 2012 class isn't going to be too big. I look for it to probably be in the ball-park of 17 ... although it could swell to be as big as 19 or 20. However, all the same, it won't be too big.

We have been getting a lot WR visits lately, Homer you hear anything whether there interest levels of any of them have shifted from medium to high?

Homer I am pumped after the last 2 classes that Iowa has landed. I would love to see it continue this year. One of my biggest wants is Darboh, he reminds of K. Davis when he was recruited, big athlete from in state, and he looks like he's going to be dang good.

My big concerns are at WR, QB (I think we need at least 1 every class), DE (especially if D. Johnson does have to leave), and CB/Safety.

I'm not worried about QB. We have pretty nice depth there currently and I sincerely believe that Derby and Rudock will give us quality depth in 2012. I agree that we could use a QB commit in the '12 recruiting class ... however, I can see us eventually nabbing a Stanzi-like guy who is a bit of a "project" but who also has a great upside. I suspect that the coaches are comfortable enough with our current depth at QB that they might initially be willing to be picky. I'm willing to bet that Iowa is in pretty close contact with Robert Gregory and Wes Lunt. We might be wanting to make sure that some of those guys attend our camp first before we extend an offer.

My bigger recruiting concerns are:

- WR: this is arguably our biggest "need" area. We wanted at least one more WR in the '11 class ... but that didn't work out.

- DT: we were lucky and got Cooper, however, we're going to be losing 2 guys from the DT depth chart after the '11 season (Daniels being a starter). Also, we've dealt with a lot of attrition on the DL and could use an infusion of talent there big-time.

- DE: we'll be losing 3 DEs from the depth chart after the '11 season, two of whom are slated to start. Thus, getting some DE talent is obviously a need.

- OT: Tobin and Reiff are both JRs and we'll need to make sure that our OT depth remains top-notch. Nabby Keppy definitely helps, but we're still going to need at least one more OT recruit for the class.

- Safety: Safety is a critical position in Iowa's D and we only landed one true "safety" in the 2011 class. Furthermore, Nico Law is also a rather big kid too ... a guy who I could see eventually growing into a LB spot (although I like him fine at SS). Anyhow, Bullock isn't a true DB recruit and I'd like to see us land a safety or two with coverage skills on their resumes.

That sucks about Houston. We need to lock in a QB early. That seems to help with the recruitment of skill positions.

All of these kids committing to Wisky and Michigan is getting me anxious. I'm ready to get some of these kids to be hawkeyes.

It is going to be hard. People like to throw around the whole "we get players drafted crap" and thats cool, but what they fail to realize is other schools put players in the NFL also what else can we bank on? Wiscy is coming off of a Rose Bowl appearance, while we are coming off an 8-5 record, Insight Bowl appearance and a bad offseason with drug busts and Rhabo. People here can say is no big deal, but if you're a 16 or 17 year old kid or a parent and you heard 13 players were in the hospital due to a workout that the coaching staff approved of, then you would be kinda hesitant to come here also it may NOT be the mindset of everyone, but it is on the mind of some and opposing coaches are loving he year Iowa just had.

Too lazy to read all 8 pages, so I don't know if it's already been addressed, but just 1 Iowa kid in that whole list. Wow. It makes it tougher when you have to go outside of the state for all of your players.

Iowa kids recruited by Iowa (scholarship only)

2011- (3) Blythe, Coble, Heiar
2010- (5) Morris, Derby, Miller, Vier, Scherff
2009- (5) Bofelli, Murphy, Wegher, Davis, Cotton
2008- (3) Reisen, Vandenberg, Ferentz

My point is that most of Iowa's players every year are out of staters. Looking at this list, at least 1 in every class is a late offer (Heiar, Miller, Murphy, Bofelli, Reisen). Only a few guys from Iowa in each class get an early offer. It also depends a lot on the talent pool. '09 and '10 were good years for Iowa, this year is a bit down. Also, Iowa has less open scholarships this year, so I wouldn't expect a ton of offers to come out until some of the top prospects are off the board for Iowa.

I'd forgotten about these other 3 guys. It was just alarming when the list only had 1 Iowa kid on it. Certainly they need to go outside the state to get players to compete in the Big Ten, but it would make it easier if they had more "sure things" within the borders. Of course, I don't understand why any kid would not want to come to Iowa.

All I'm saying is be patient, some Iowa kids don't get an offer till after their senior year. Only the kids that are "for sure D1 talent" (Davis, Wegher, Morris, Blythe, Derby) get early offers.

Folks also have to realize that it is still WAY early in the recruiting process ... at least by Iowa standards. Such early offers by the Iowa staff are often guys who are highest up on our recruiting board .... guys who truly stand out on tape. Many traditional Iowa recruits don't necessarily fit that mold and are guys who are "developmental guys." Right now we're seeing the "no-brainer" talents who the coaches have gone ahead and offered. There are still guys who the coaches are evaluating and tracking closely .... however, such guys still need to show continued improvement. Furthermore, the coaches often seem to like to offer only after meeting with a kid and his family ... that way they can feel more comfortable about who the kid is.

In-state recruits often get one of their best chances to earn a 'ship when the come to the camps during June. While the state of Iowa may not be welling with "no-brainer" talent ... there are still a number of in-state guys who have a pretty decent chance of earning a ship from the Hawks.
