Time to punt?

Iowa has had plenty of good punters, so no, it has nothing to do with the system as you can go back and look at all the ones who have worked. College Football is turnover when players lose eligibility, so you are bound to see that every year at every position. If Iowa was not annually winning more then they lose, I would call it systemic.

The issue is not losing more than winning. With the non conference schedule, then there should be 3 wins built in most every year. Assuming there is at least 1 Illinois on the Big Schedule, then that is 4. Assuming at least one below average, that makes 5. If the goal is 7-5 then that means 2-5 against the rest. If the goal is 8 then it is 3-4 against the rest. I don't think it unreasonable that Iowa Exptect 4-3 against the rest with an occasional 3-4 against the Big and a loss against a weak or NC team which would make 7. Your goal isn't what many on here would like to see. The system is set up basically to be 3-4 with an occasional plus or minus 2.

It is systemic depending on your goals.

Given we have the Dean of continuity at the helm, why shouldn't it be 4-3 at a minimum?

Iowa has won 8 or more games in 3 out of the last 4 seasons and 7 in the one it failed to hit 8....and this one is a long ways from being over.

I totally get that. Still, it's the system. Except for when the stars align or don't align, we are going to come here and complain about the results. One year, the QB. The next no running game. This year punting. The mechanics of the issues change, but the fundamentals don't. The fundamentals are that KF coaches for 1 possession games against better (and sometimes not so good) teams. Until that changes, things won't change. Correct the punting and it will be something else. We can't stop anyone between the 2's. We can't move the ball for 2/3 of a game.

This issue is not punting. The issue is the system.

You summed up my gripe SO well. It is ALWAYS something.

Not arguing... I just dont agree with the premice nor do I think its worthwhile to call out players while there is so much wrong.

Think again re the premise. In years where we are really good on place kicking and punting and TO margin, those are the difference between 7-8 wins and 9-11 wins. An improved punting game would definitely help. It is a fact.

It is not calling out a college kid, I believe, to say we need to get better at a position. It is done all the time on these boards. It can be done tactfully so that you don't tear a kid up on the critique, but it is done quite regularly.

I don't disagree with what you are saying. Maybe the key is: "What makes the stars align for Iowa?" It's hardly perfection because win or lose the Hawks are hardly that. There is always some story. All good teams over come adversity. Iowa due to the system seems to create their own adversity maybe?

Is not the REAL gripe here that we haven't won a national championship under KF. We have won/shared more conference titles than anyone else in the conference since he came here, short of OSU, Michigan and maybe Wisconsin. Maybe more than Wisconsin, I am just too lazy to check.

I mean, when you reference to the stars aligning properly, isn't that the same argument for every school? I guess I am trying to figure out what it would take for this fan base to not act like we are supremely cursed? I would say year in, year out, that we do better than most programs out there, AND we have won conference HW that TD and no one since him has won in basketball, in terms of regular season conference recognition.

What is the REAL gripe here? Is it that our current coach doesn't talk enough about how he burns deep down to win a national championship and he will do anything and everything possible to accomplish that? By winning conference championships he puts us in that very position.

It's not calling out anyone specifically, but unfortunately, it is only one position. Nothing one can do about that.

KirFer is not happy with the punt game either. I anticipate improvements in this area over the next few weeks.

What makes you think you wouldn't be complaining about "the system" regardless of what team you were a die hard fan for? I guess my point is that I don't think we are much different than many other programs that aren't Alabama or OU or insert your big name school of choice. And if we are not them, then what is the real problem? Is it that we don't win 10 games every year? Is it that our coach isn't firerey enough? What is it?

I have a feeling it is that we haven't won a national championship and our coach doesn't talk enough in terms of wanting to win one, at least for some fans. The thing is, there are a lot of coaches that are like that. Bill Belichek is like that. The difference is when you have actually won won, then people don't bring up the fact that you don't talk about it. Just like when a coach isn't real firerey on the sidelines, he is under control and confident I his team and what they are doing, if he is winning games. If he is losing games, then the fans whine that he doesn't show any passion.

That is where some people are with this regime.

I don't even remotely expect to win a national championship. Nice straw man. I was at the North Texas game. It was painful to watch us in a win. I wouldn't mind watching a product on the field that is fun instead of this mentality of just trying not to screw up once you have a 7-10 point lead. It is so painful to see an offense that takes its foot off the gas EVERY GOD DAMN GAME for 20 years.

No, but in a 12 game season, I think 9 wins plus or minus 1 is reasonable with an occasion much higher a bit lower is OK for a 20 year coach with a big secure contract.

Wouldn't mind not being the Cowherd Fodder. We are his fodder, not because of the record...not because of anything other than the system. When we win, boring is OK. Losing, not so OK. Average...hum drum.

When does he make adjustments? When a 2nd team punter parent calls a press conference or Jimbo calls?

Oh I know. I just found funny that we have a QB on the roster that had a terrific punt average. Took me back to Dallas Cowboys Danny White days.

Now that you mention it, I don't ever recall an Iowa punter having a hammy issues. Hmmm.
Good point most Iowa punters have complete leg soreness.

What's sad is the foot is actually on the gas floored and that's what we get.
