Time to Pull the Plug On the Oglesby's Playing Time?

This is year four of former highly touted recruit Josh Oglesby's stint at the U of Iowa. There is no time left to "improve" his shooting touch, he is who he is. His sophomore slump was much debated two years ago, as he ranked statistically LAST in the nation in three point shooting, yet Fran continued to sing his praises as being "the best" practice shooter he has seen. For that reason, Josh continued to get plenty of playing time and continued to cost the hawks games with big misses. Since we didn't have any other shooters on the roster, we gave Fran the benefit of the doubt for playing him.

Last season, Josh improved his shot a bit. He showed glimpses of why he was highly touted in a couple games, but by and large could not be counted on to hit a clutch 3, and he ultimately helped contribute to our last season string of very close losses.

It is now Josh's senior season. Over the past two years, the staff has gone out and brought in several guys who specialize in the 3 ball (Jok, Uthoff, Ellingson, etc.). Nonetheless, Josh is still seeing the lion's share of p/t compared with Jok and Ellingson. Is it deserved? Here are Josh's 3 point shooting percentages in games this year, starting with last night's game:

0 - 5
0 - 4
0 - 3
3 - 7
2 - 6
1 - 7
2 - 6
1 - 6
2 - 8
1 - 5

He is shooting 21% from the field and 21% from 3 point land! Like his sophomore year, these are some of the worst percentages in major college basketball. The misses are adding up and costing us huge. Is Josh the best we have? Should he see so much playing time, or has he had his chance and should we let the younger guys come in and get more experience. I believe we know what we have in Josh (like Rudock), and it's time to let the younger guys with more potential (Bethard) start taking his minutes.

There's more to the game of b-ball than just shooting. But, as the season goes on, I suspect you will see Jok getting more of Josh's minutes.

I watched Ogs closely during the ISU game to see what it is that he does so well to make up for being one of the worst 3 point shooters in college basketball this season yet still get playing time. The "defense" that his defenders cite was non-existent. His guy repeatedly blew by him. His shooting once again resulted in turnover like effects, as the hawks would gain some momentum (halfway through the second half), the Josh would hoist up a brick, and ISU would get the rebound and run down the court for an easy bucket.

At this point, based on his play vs. ISU, I would say Jok and his 50% shooting earned a place as the 6th man for this team and should see all of Ogs minutes going forward. He's got upside and 3 years to play. Josh will have a nice career outside basketball.

Who was the guy our JUCO point guard was bffs with and was trying to convince to come to Iowa? I wonder how that guy is doing this year? I believe he was much higher touted than the guy we got.

Willie Atwood for ASU.

17 min per game
4 pts per game
36% from 2
33% from 3

Oglesby continues to do what he does best. His stat line vs. UNI was 0-3 (dropping his shooting percentage below 20%), with 2 turnovers and 0 assists in 17 minutes of playing time. Could these be the worst stats of any "top 150" senior in basketball history? Time to pull the plug. Seriously. This guy is more of a liability than having just 4 guys on the floor.

I could seriously granny shot a higher percentage. How is even possible to shoot that bad?

There are kids playing high school ball in Iowa right now (like Lohaus was last year) who would be much bigger assets to the current team than Oglesby. Yet he still sees so much playing time.

I haven't verified but I would bet his minutes are down significantly compared to last year.

He does contribute in other ways, but he needs to stop ******* shooting so much.

Or shoot without hesitation or wondering if he should take the shot....

He does defend well, pass very well and handles the ball with very few turnovers.....

Not to add too much fuel to the fire but the men's sharpshooter has 12 total makes on the season while Dixon on the women's team hit a school record 10 treys vs Drake just today alone.

It's been time to pull the plug for the past 4 years.

Oglewinkel has had 1 year where he was actually putting the biscuit in the basket at a clip > 40% and believe it or not, that was last year. I can guarantee you the kid can light it up in practice but when the spotlight is on him, he's tentative as a mouse in a room full of cats to actually put up a shot.

If you look at his statistics, the kids lights it up in big wins and goes in a shell in tight games. And its not like the big wins are carried on Oglewinkels shoulders either. Look at the Minny game last year as a perfect example. JO contributed on two nice 3s to end the half, shot 70% from 3 and the offense was basically geared towards getting him his looks. We didn't win the Minny game because of his shooting, in fact, we pulled away when he was on the bench but it was once of his best games as a Hawk.

Then the kid goes into a cave and doesn't have another double-digit game for a month in spite of the constant high screens that our bigs are setting for him while our offense looks like a three ringed circus.

The kid simply isn't a gamer. Turn off the lights and he can he could shoot for days, turn on the lights and his nutz pucker up into his sack....not a good combination for success.

Finally a response that makes sense. He is simply not a d-1 player. My God, how many excuses can be made for this kid? You could pull any decent shooter from any d-3 school in Iowa and they would be able to do at the minimum, the very same things that Oglesby does on the court. Most of them would be quicker on their feet. People need to open their eyes & watch some other games. Good d-1 teams ARE NOT PLAYING KIDS LIKE MANY THAT IOWA PUTS ON THE COURT.

Fran likes both Josh and Peter.

I think they will both get their share of minutes, maybe just about the same when it's all said and done. I also think their shooting stats will be very similar.

Fran won't make any drastic changes in the rotation, except to tighten it up in Big Ten play, with Uhl and Dickerson getting fewer minutes.

Good thinking on coach's part. Just what Iowa needs is to become even more "unathletic".

I was high on Jok coming into the season based on the play in game performance but he is still terrible on d, turns the ball over to often and isn't shooting much better.

At this point it looks like a mistake to have passed on Jeremy Morgan in favor of Jok.

Jok has not been Terrible on D and been lot better recently on Offense and needs to be starting and playing EVERY one of Josh O's minutes and that is all there is to it.
