Time to Pull the Plug On the Oglesby's Playing Time?

I think Uhl ends up getting more playing time that both Jok or Ogs. Jok is horrible on defense...bad with a capital, NO ANTICIPATION. Guys are by him before he moves his feet. His eyes are way too high on defense.

If Oglethree doesn't start hitting soon, you can't play him those kind of minutes...we need scoring in the half court at that position. You need a shooter period at the 2 in Fran's offense.

Uhl brings so much to the offensive game...he's a total mismatch against a two, and can be a matchup nightmare at the 3 also. He showed good pull up range the other night, along with some aggressive rebounding. He will be fine.

I haven't watched him that closely for the most part. Is he still doing his stupid fadaway?

Yep, you got it....he does not have very good form, usually short, and as a shooter don't you know, or can't you feel if it's short? Just askin I guess....He truly has to work hard at getting way open b/c he doesn't (or can't penetrate).....defensively, not bad, but we really need him to uncork the plug and start draining 3's.....starting on Friday.....he needs to take advantage of the minutes he's out there and be as productive as he can....

With the amount of playing time he is gifted by the coach and the amount of plays/screens set specifically to get him an open look, I should hope he would get hot. The problem is, every shot he clanks off the rim kills us and is as good as a turnover. The low percentage reward is not worth the high percentage risk.

Mark my words, one of these big games coming up, he will get hot and save our butts!!

Jok is being given the opportunity and he is not getting it done either.

I'm so so on JO but he does everything better than Jok except shoot and Jok isn't beating by much there.

i too am baffled that it seems so hard for guys who were considered good shooters in high school to make them on this team.

Its strange.

20 minutes and 0 points like he's been getting just can't happen.

On the other hand he's playing that much and we're playing good defense. I'm sure he's a part of that (again, haven't watched him, or anyone, that closely this year)

I'm sure he'll improve. There's no way he's really a 21% shooter.

Both teams have equal opportunity to rebound a miss, it's really not like a turnover.

Josh will be fine. His percentage on 3's last year was pretty good. He won't be a star, but Fran is clear that J's defense, passing, assist to turnover ratio, rebounding and general play on the floor is pretty darn good and that he will get playing time as a sub in the top 7-8. Fine with me. I guess I am ok with Fran making the call on playing time for his kids rather than the Hawkeyenation message board.

I wouldn't say its time to pull the plug on his minutes. He does things well aside from scoring. He's second on the team in assists and leads the team in A/TO at 5.4 and is not a defensive liability like Jok is. We definitely shouldn't run any offensive plays that try to create shots for the guy who shoots 21%, though, but I wouldn't say that he should be kept on the bench like the only thing that matters is his shooting percentage.

I've seen him twice in person this season, and yes. He still is pulling back with his head when he shoots. I woulda though he'd had that straightened out by now. His shot looks the same as it always has. I will say this, in warm-ups like FM says, he kills it. Twice now I've seen him and he was "killin it." I thought, tonight he's gonna go off. Then Colonel Clank shows up. I'm sorry. I like the kid and I don't mean to criticize, but the JO project needs to end.

He has some skills. I like his rebounding and tenacity on defense. But his 3pt shooting needs to end.

I know you can't base a performance on one single shot, but in the second half against Alcorn State he had a wide open 3...nobody within 10 feet of him...and he bricked it.

He carried the hawkeyes a few games last year with his 3 ball...he either needs to find it again or he just can't play.

On a side note, I always thought White was supposed to be able to hit a 3 point shot even though he's been around a 20% shooter his whole career. I remember last year Fran said he hits them all the time in practice blah blah...this year he's shooting 15%

This is going to be our demise when we do get to the tourney. Every team in the tourney has the ability to shoot the three at this level and we can't count on straight possessions to beat quality teams. This is our one achilles heel, plus the overall shooting pct, of the hawks. We set ourselves up to blow out people and then the clanks come in bunches. Josh either needs to get on with his shot or sit. It's like a golfer with the yips, you just don't "shoot your way outta it". To me he is a mental mess and thus so he is going to continue his Chuck Knoblock type performances up. When you stop shooting and start shoving the shot up it just ain't going in. We really need to develop Jok or Uhl to be that 3 point force going forward this season or we will be a one and done in the tourney.

We have been waiting for him to consistently hit shots for 4 years now.

He is a spot up shooter only. He cant create his own shot. he cant create coming off of a screen. Great shooters can square their shoulders in the air and knock it down, Josh cant. he has to have his feet under him.

I think he is a very smart player, probably too smart for the "shooter" 2 guard mentality. It is like he will not force a shot at all. everything has to be perfect for him to attempt it. He loves the corner 3. twice he was open the other night there and it was a terrible pass. So he didnt shoot it, in this scenario that is right. It was just an observation that he is an intelligent player

Take a chance JO, let it fly

I get the criticism of Oglesby, but I don't get comments like the one above in bold. He shot 37% from 3 as a freshman, he shot over 40% last year. He shot it terribly his sophomore year and so far this year, but his freshman and juniors years he hit at a very reasonable level.

This is year four of former highly touted recruit Josh Oglesby's stint at the U of Iowa. There is no time left to "improve" his shooting touch, he is who he is. His sophomore slump was much debated two years ago, as he ranked statistically LAST in the nation in three point shooting, yet Fran continued to sing his praises as being "the best" practice shooter he has seen. For that reason, Josh continued to get plenty of playing time and continued to cost the hawks games with big misses. Since we didn't have any other shooters on the roster, we gave Fran the benefit of the doubt for playing him.

Last season, Josh improved his shot a bit. He showed glimpses of why he was highly touted in a couple games, but by and large could not be counted on to hit a clutch 3, and he ultimately helped contribute to our last season string of very close losses.

It is now Josh's senior season. Over the past two years, the staff has gone out and brought in several guys who specialize in the 3 ball (Jok, Uthoff, Ellingson, etc.). Nonetheless, Josh is still seeing the lion's share of p/t compared with Jok and Ellingson. Is it deserved? Here are Josh's 3 point shooting percentages in games this year, starting with last night's game:

0 - 5
0 - 4
0 - 3
3 - 7
2 - 6
1 - 7
2 - 6
1 - 6
2 - 8
1 - 5

He is shooting 21% from the field and 21% from 3 point land! Like his sophomore year, these are some of the worst percentages in major college basketball. The misses are adding up and costing us huge. Is Josh the best we have? Should he see so much playing time, or has he had his chance and should we let the younger guys come in and get more experience. I believe we know what we have in Josh (like Rudock), and it's time to let the younger guys with more potential (Bethard) start taking his minutes.
His 3 pt shooting is a huge disappointment. But the idea is to win the next game Who do you have that better Josh does a lot of this well. I just don't see who you have that gives us a better chance to win

He played 13 minutes against NC...his lowest minutes of the last 5 games. I think he's just in there to give other guys a breather...until/unless his shot starts to fall. He is a senior with a lot of experience. In his minutes at NC he had 3 assists no TOs and 1 steal and took 3 shots. It's not like he's killing us out there.

While I agree that Jok isn't exactly setting the world on fire with his shooting, it makes me wonder why it has been so difficult under Fran to find a guy who can shoot from outside. I think in football, you can develop 3 star recruits into studs. In basketball, if you bring in a bunch of 3 stars, they probably aren't going to suddenly learn to shoot.

Jok and Ellingson were not heavily recruited, but they came in has one dimensional players (shooters). They aren't expected to be defensive superstars, but they are guys who Fran believed could raise us from the bottom of the Big 10 in 3 point shooting. I think it's time for them to take Josh's minutes and build some confidence.

Jok's recruitment was curtailed by a high-school knee injury.

Jok has more upside and should take some of JO's minutes. 21% is bench material. Especially for supposedly our sniper. More Jok please!
