Time to Prepare Excuse

Interesting Jimmy Johnson, GT message boards and many other talking heads are down playing Iowa's victory because they had a month to prepare for GT's triple option. Explain to me why in the 1996 Fiesta Bowl, Florida had from December 2, 1995 to January 2, 1996 to prepare for Nebraska's triple option and they got absolutely rolled. 62-24.

There are no excuses, the Hawkeyes defense is rock solid and Iowa is a legit top 5 team.

Yup. It's funny but nobody cares to call to memory that GT had a month to prepare for Iowa too-turned out well for them don't you think?! Apparently there is some kind of break down in space time that allowed Iowa a month and GT only a few days to prepare for the game...sounds feasable huh?!

I actually thought we got some love from JJ last night post-game. As I recall he was asked whether he thought the reason GT had so much trouble was that they were rusty from the month off but he replied it was more that Iowa had a month to prepare for GT's offensive scheme. But I seem to recall him crediting the Hawkeyes for playing well and shutting down GT's offense.

There has been a lot of love from the media for the Hawks today here in Miami... not sure about everywhere else. We DID have 4 weeks to prepare. Norm himself said he wouldn't want to face them with one week preparation so take it with a grain of salt.

The Orange Bowl film will be a blueprint on how to stop the option. Getting their kids to play disciplined defense will be key. Only a few teams in the country could have stopped that offense this year, and the Hawks were one of those teams.

Also....

It's not as though teams in the ACC have no idea whats coming from GT until the week they play. Coaches, especially assistants and cords, have an entire summer to begin "game planning" if you will. Out of conference games might be a different story. It would be like saying Iowa is completely caught off guard each time Wisconsin comes out with a big bruising running back and we only have a week to figure out how to stop it.

GT made adjustments at halftime that led to their success on their opening 2nd half drive. Then Iowa adjusted and began to stop that as well, and it didn't take a month...

Bottom Line:

A month or not to prepare, Iowa's D was simply awesome last night. Norm had the boys well coached and they executed almost flawlessly. Couldn't have scripted a better spanking than that.

Georgia Tech may not have a lot of success in bowl games because teams will have a lot of time to prepare.

That being said, no one has done to them what Iowa did last night.

That's just admitting Tech is a one trick pony then and shows Iowa is a focused team.

I have a feeling if Iowa only had a week to get ready they still would have slowed Tech. Maybe not as much, but this defense is elite.

I think the time to prepare is irrelevant. Even though Iowa had a month to prepare they still aren't able to simulate what they do in practice. Iowa doesn't have the athletes or the knowledge/experience to simulate GT's offense in practice. You can look at tape for a year but if you can't duplicate it in practice it doesn't matter.

On ESPN's college football show last night after the game analyst Trevor Matich said that the preparation time was overrated. He said that Iowa played the same way they have all season. Iowa just playes solid disciplined defense. Nothing flashy and nothing different than they've done all season.

Having Clayborn didn't hurt either. How many D-ends can shed blockers and attack the ball like he did last night. Iowa's defense was simply a good match (or bad, depending on the side your on) for GT's offense. Good D-ends and linebackers are no match for that offense.

I can't remember if it was Clayborn or Edds who said, after the gam, they didn't spend hardly any scrimmage time practicing against cut blocking, only individual drills.

It may be just me, farmerj3...

...but he is right.

A team that has only a week to prepare against that offense has a lot tougher task than one that has a month. It is always harder to prepare for a gimmick scheme in the normal time. And they run it really well against most teams. We have a wizard defensive coordinator and he had a month to prepare.

What's the problem with admitting that a month to prepare makes a difference? They had a month to prepare for our defense and they fell flat on their face. And their guys looked stupid for claiming they were nervous and all of that other stuff. And their AA DE was manhandled.

Maybe I just don't see a conspiracy behind every comment made re something Iowa does. I didn't see it as a big deal.

Maybe this is the wrong thread to mention, but some love needs to go to our offense. If not for a couple mistakes and poor execution in the second half at critical times, the score would've been a lot more lopsided and GT would've been simply embarrassed... again.

Pretty much agree with Luz, here. Other than a bit in the 2nd half against Ohio St, no one has had success running against Iowa. We were very healthy, rested and focused on Defense. And Ga Tech found out just how good the I O W A defense really is right now.

Think it's funny how a Ga Tech fan bragged to me that they had not used their punter in 3 games. On Tuesday night, we saw their punter continuosly. :)

Because, just like you said, they too had a month to prepare for us and tweek their offense. They sound like a bunch of clown fans making excuses.
