This team needs a low post scorer.

Fran has done a great job of upgrading the talent level. Fans have to be patient and allow that talent to develop. Eventually Woody and Olesani will become effective low post scorers but probably not this year. Our zone offense would look better if we had Jared Sullinger in the lineup but we don't so be patient and thank the Lord that we are finally improving the talent level around here.

Josh O just needs to break out and have a a couple of solid games to get his confidence going. Hopefully it will happen before the B10 season starts but no guarantees. Josh was a great 3 pt shooter in high school and so far in practice but unless he can relax and duplicate that shooting in the game, he may not be able to contribute in the B10. I hope he gets it going!

Well then will someone take Josh off to the side and tell him Saturday's game is just a practice game but that its an open practice to the fans. Then we can see him shoot and make eight three point shots in a row. ;)

So, your point is that we have talent, but we don't run a system to use that talent. But, we have to be patient, because soon our talent will get more talented, and then the system that doesn't work now should work next year?

We're back!

It's not easy for anyone to come out 100% mentally ready to play a team that you know you will beat by 30 when you play bad. They will come out stronger when they play teams that have a chance to compete.

Yes saying a freshman who has played 3 games will be better in the future is crazy isn't it?

3 games in and Iowa has no low post...amazing how heading into last season Iowa had a post scorer, if you believe this board and that guy is still on the roster, but heading into the season last year we all knew Basabe was short on post moves and a go to shot, I expect his minutes and numbers to improve as the season goes along. Woodbury looks to be playing too fast and rushing things when he has the ball in his hands and makes his move. To mock his MVP award is something to laugh at because the fact is that is probably the best competition he faced in high school. No matter who Iowa plays, he isn't going against high schoolers anymore and that matters, the players he is playing against are stronger and more physical than anyone he has played against yet. That said, I like what I see out of Woodbury, big men develop slower, except for the elite players. In time, as he adjusts to college he is going to score and it will be at some point during this season. I posted a while back that with all the hype that came with his recruitment and ranking in the top-100 that he would take Matt Gatens' spot for the lightning rod of angry Iowa fans and it has already begun for some. The kid has talent and is going to be a heck of a player for Iowa in his career and still this season.
Fran has been looking for a combination of players and he is subbing quite a lot, as one poster mentioned, he seems to not be allowing some players to get in a groove. I am not questioning Fran, he needs to find players and Iowa has won all three games. If Gardner-Webb is the best team Iowa plays and it is close early, look for a shorter bench. As the season goes along, I think the rotation will be 9 players at the most. Iowa has played better in second halves because they have shortened the bench at those times to start the second half of play and it has been a couple combinations of players that have worked.
I like this team and still have the same expectations as to start the season. This team has a lot of versatility, the only area I want to see improvement is the droughts, but as the freshman grow up it will happen less and less. I do think this team is better today than they were at this same time last season.

Another cause for concern is that Iowa is (supposedly) a team built to run and score in transition. Howard missed a whopping 38 shots last night, but outside of White, we seemed content to shoot, and miss, threes than to attack the iron.
I hope Fran is not bringing back Butler type ! I hate those.

I would start Basabe instead of Mccabe. You need some muscle and athleticism in the paint. Gessel, Marble, Basabe, White and Woodbury would be my 5. They are starting games way to perimeter oriented and its one shot and done. They start like they have been against decent teams and they will dig themselves a big hole. Basabe can grab some boards, get some put backs and set the tone, it would also take some pressure off Woodbury of having to control the paint by himself, which Im not sure hes capable of that yet.

Your last sentence is obvious. The question is are they better now then they were at the end of last season. I think they are, but its close.

I was able to watch the game tonight on All Access with the benefit of knowing we were only going to score 66 points.

The subtle negativity towards Woodbury is puzzling to me. I would echo Fran and say he has been "fabulous." Maybe not in a top 10 Sportscenter kind of way, but in a "this guy makes winning plays" kind of way.

I love me some Woodbury. Turn your basketball card in if you can't see all the little things this guy does. He was great in that Howard game. The stat line of 2/2,4 pt, 6 reb, 1 block, 1 assist is solid, but he does so much more.
The guy plays great defense on the perimeter (high screen and rolls).
He fronts the post (if you've coached basketball, you know how hard it can be to get a big to accept doing this).
He gets tough rebounds where he must scrap (instead of whining about lack of explosiveness, praise how he'll push guys out of the way).
He outlets (see fastbreak #1 where White gets the jam).
He passes from the post (see the sweet scoop pass to Marble; see fan pass against the zone).
He keeps plays alive (see first play of the game vs. both CMU and Quincy).

Rewatch the tape: he had probably 10 positives and 1 negative (where he mistimed his leap on a rebound).
On the season he is shooting 63 percent from the field with about 5 rebounds and nearly 2 blocks per game...in about 17 minutes per. The 1 (and only) time where he was hit with a post entry against the Bison he locked his man to the floor and delivered a beautiful jump hook. The other score he corralled a dart from MikeG to score at the buzzer.

All this being written, my favorite part of the game was his reaction to White's alley oop. A 7 footer with that kind of passion? Rare. Sit back and enjoy. We have the makings of a great center.

Agree he just keeps coming at you doing the little things. What I like is that he knows he's 7 foot and plays like it (anti-Gorney) and also has great skills, hustle and runs the floor well. Woodbury is a great player and will just continue to get better. I also like what I've seen from Gabe so far as well. You can't teach his length and knack for being around the ball.

I couldn't disagree with this more. Outside of Oglesthree our 3pt shooting has looked much improved. Gessel is a huge upgrade over Cartwright, Clemmons has looked capable, McCabe is an excellent shooter, and May has always been solid. Marble has also improved noticeably here.

I agree with your points with the exception that May has always been solid... May has shot 29% (FR), 39% (SO), 34% (JR), and is 0-1 very early on this year from 3. May has been hurt though most of his Hawkeye career though and has been a streaky shooter when healthy. Gesell >>>> Cartwright. Clemmons has looked good early on as well. McCabe has shot the ball well, from 3pt line at least, thru 3 games. However, Iowa is shooting 32% from 3pt line so far this year.

Marble: 4/11 (36%)
Gesell: 5/13 (39%)
Oglesby: 1/12 (8%)
McCabe: 5/7 (71%)
White: 0/6
Clemmons: 3/6

I agree that everyone looks the part, but the shots are not falling at this point. The good news is that they are getting wide open looks. But this would not scare me as an opposing coach, I would play zone all game long against Iowa and keep Gessel, Clemmons, Marble out of the paint. At least until they prove me wrong. Outside of White, Iowa's top scorers have not been very efficient on the offensive end. I think Fran has been tinkering with the lineups, and the shooting will improve as things settle into place. The defense looks much improved even against the weak competition so far.

May is definitely solid. Throw out the first year, that was lick Ball. He had no business tsking 144 treys that year but he had no choice. The last two years hes shot very well from behind the arc.

That answer is also obvious...no, but I also didn't expect them to be yet.

Does that mean you think they are not as good? I think they are slightly better. Also I didn't mean my last post to come off as me being a jerk but after rereading it I see it comes off that way. Sorry if it did it wasn't supposed to.

Didn't think you were a jerk about your post. Iowa is not close to being the team that finished the season...yet. They have a lot more depth and talent, but they also have some inexperience, it won't take a long time for Iowa to make strides and get back to that point, I just hope it happens say...tonight :)

5* Leonard as a freshman avg 2.1 ppg, 1.2 rpg and 8.2 mpg.. then as a SO he avg'd 13.6 ppg, 8.2 rpg and 31.8 mpg, to even think Woodbury is going to do better than a So that got drafted into the NBA is expecting way to much,
escpecially since he is splitting time with Olaseni.
between the 2 of them they are avg'ing 6.6 ppg, 8.7 rpg and 26.6 mpg.. as this season progresses they will get better, just like White got better as the season went on. yes I REMEMBER THE DBL DBL against Chicago State, but against the same type of compition NC A&T he played 12 minutes, scored just 2 points and just 4 rebounds and didn't start til there were 11 games in the season, just be patient with this kid and tone down the expectation so many are putting on him and the team..

If you watch the video, there is a huge difference on quickness, court awareness, and athleticism. I believe he will develop into a solid player. Not dissing, but I think there is too much expectation on Adam at this point. Not sure he will ever be quick. Steve Wait is an example of a player that developed, but Waite had some natural quickness to begin with. Just think the post is going to be a big scoring problem this year. He may pick up some points as teams are going to over play others. Adam does seem to do quite well on getting boards if he is not blocked out.

Again, it's more of a matter of expectations. I think the expectations at this point are too high.

Leonard and Woodbury are similar in height and star ratings only.

However, I think it is unfair to Woodbury's skill set to downplay it as being inferior to Leonard's.

They offer very different positives; I think Woodbury's are more subtle, but just as important to a good team.

One thing that is already apparent to me: Woodbury won't be crying on the sideline anytime soon.
