Twelve-yard punts are never good. But when the punter is player that ends up downing a punt, well, that's just embarrassing.

The Iowa Hawkeyes set up to punt from their own 49-yard line. The punt itself was not good, traveling just 25 yards in the air. But then it took a horrific bounce, kicking back past the entire punt team except the punter, who was the only player left to down the ball at the 40-yard line. That's an 11-yard punt, and it could have been worse if the punter wasn't there...

I'm not going to be TOO harsh on Mr. Kornbrath just yet...David Bradley wasn't "all that" for the first year or two and things turned out pretty well for him.

Maybe if he flossed and brushed a couple of times per day, he wouldn't have such bad corn breath.

Yeah...that punt was awful to see. I was at the opposite end of the field and it looked like he just kicked it straight up into the air.

He was trying to pooch/direct the punt, to boom it 50 0r 60 yards into the end zone does absolutely no good. UNI's punt returner had no chance for a return. If the punt would have bounced forward, like most punts do 95% of the time, it could have been a good to great punt depending how many yards it traveled. The announcers and most of you know nothing.

Hey its not easy for Kirk to get talent to come to a state like Iowa.

I know that you're just trying to make light of the situation, but I think we've been fairly spoiled when it comes to punters. Bradley, Donahue, Guthrie were all pretty solid, both in distance and in pooch punting. Even Fenstermaker was serviceable for a year. Sure, they'd shank one from time-to-time but overall were good.

Hopefully Kornbrath or Mullings can find their groove, both are still inexperienced.

When you have a true freshman punter -- a muffed punt is not unusual. I think our punter will be a good one. He will have some ups and downs this year but down the road, I think he will be very good.

David Bradley was shaky as a freshman. So was Donahue (remember those 10-15 yard shanks he'd sprinkle in between 60 yard boomers?).

We've been spoiled with good punters. Bradley took more flak than he deserved because he came in on the heels of Baker, and that was the standard he was held to. Same goes for Donahue to Bradley (I know there was a year in between) and Kornbrath to Donahue/Guthrie. It's not fair to hold a freshman punter to those standards, especially when the standard-bearers struggled as freshmen, too.

We know a few things...

End result: 11 yard punt.

Punter downing his own punt because everyone else had the audacity to run further than 11 yards: Not good.

You hung a lot on one two letter word, "if".

The intent isn't what's embarrassing...it's the result. I would have thought you, in all of your greatness over everyone else, would know that...:p

Already covered eloquently, by another poster. I won't name names, but his initials are HAWKEYESHANE!:D

We know it was not a good punt. Is there more to know?

As already stated, if punt had bounced forward, it would have been considered a good pooch punt as would have put them around 20 yard line or inside. INstead it bounced backward and over head of at least one Hawk and ended up being downed by punter.

He is doing fine for a freshman punter.

You forgot to tell those kids to get off your lawn.

Punts bounce forward when you kick a spiral. When you drop the tip, like he did on purpose, the ball will bounce straight up or backwards.
He shanked it. No if's, and's, or but's about it.

Assuming he was trying to pooch it (given the way he's been kicking it, he might as well have taken a full cut at it...averaging around 35 yards per kick I think), why wasn't Weinke the punter in that situation? Maybe it wasn't designed this week?
