Most athletes are used to people kissing up to them and treating them as something overly special. They have treated that way all through high school and then when they get to college to play ball. They get their noses bent out of shape when something is said that is not absolute idolatry and they aren't put on a pedestal. No one likes to be criticized at work, at home, anywhere but welcome to the real world. Criticism is part of it. If they don't like the criticism I would suggest staying away from the boards.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you and 9year would have a big fit if the roles were reversed and someone was talking trash about you publically. Its easy to hide behind an anonymous screen name. I know it would be very hard for me at my age to let that go, but def not when I was 18.
