There goes Fleming

Concerning. That's all I'll say. 2 players in 2 days and neither has been on campus for 12 months. Either mccaffrey is missing or they don't like playing for him. It's not like Iowa has all Americans waiting in the wings for scholarships to open. I like Fran, but there's an issue here.

Yup. And as previously noted several times in this thread there must be issues at Ohio State and Michigan State too. This is the nature of college BB today people.

The issue here is this: The players ahead of them and the ones coming in next fall are better.

As Rob Howe posted elsewhere, there will be over 700 transfers in D1 alone this spring. That is INSANE. Because Iowa has 2 or 3 does not mean the sky is falling.

BIG will be a meat grinder.

Not really. We didn't get a team beyond the Sweet 16. MSU lost their 4 best players...assuming Davis leaves. Indiana lost Yogi. Purdue lost 2 of their best. And only Indiana even won an NCAA game out of these 3. Maryland loses at least 2 and probably 3. Wisconsin will be tough but they need Hayes to return. I don't see a meat grinder...looks wide open to me.

Big assumption that Jones will be back or that his knee will be healthy enough to allow him to contribute in a meaningful way. We will be really weak at the point as CW and Bohannon are not really quick guards. Most of the other players are very inexperienced and we have no idea if they can compete in big time games. Everybody says Ellingson can really shoot (in practice), but in games, not so much. Its a total crap shoot as to how most of these players will produce. Given another year in the system and game experience, we may be pretty good in 2017-18, but this year will be scary.

It's crazy that people can be on a message board and still be uninformed enough to post stuff like that.

Really? The Iowa staff is unwilling to showcase some of their younger talent? So when the crew that just graduated were freshmen... oh, never mind.

Gesell and Woodbury were four year starters, and Clemmons was a three year starter. Who exactly did Gesell, Woodbury, and Clemmons knock out of the lineup. Of course, Uthoff replaced McCabe after he graduated. Anyone that follows Iowa basketball knows that experience is one of the main factors that McCaffery looks at. I really don't believe that if Ulis would of came to Iowa he would of replaced a guy that was looking to start his third straight year in Gesell. Oh, never mind.

People need to chill out. There was a reason that Fleming didn't see the court, and that was he couldn't beat out Ellingson in practice.

We have lost two players who contributed exactly zero to the team last year. This isn't like we are losing high level contributors. They were both a good two years away still from every being good enough to even see the court more than spot minutes. Fran not has an opportunity to recruit over them.

Do you follow Iowa basketball? Basabe went to the bench. McCabe went to the bench BEFORE he graduated. White, Woodbury, Geselll, Clemmons, Basabe, McCabe and others started as true freshmen. Fran plays the best players. This year's senior class went to an NIT championship game followed by 3 straight NCAA tournaments. They started because they were successful and better than the guys sitting on the bench.

Fleming stated that he wanted to find a coaching staff that would give him a chance.

What he really meant was he wants a coach that will recognize how good he THINKS he is and play him over more talented all around players IMO. Maybe he will get lucky and find a coach that will play him even if he can't guard anyone. Does Iowa State have any scholarships available?

If Ulis would have picked Iowa two years ago IMO Clemmons would have been gone. I like Clemmons a lot and am glad he stayed even though a point guard like Ulis could have made a huge difference in last year and this years success. Hell, Iowa might still be playing but Clemmons is a great Hawkeye and I enjoyed every minute of his playing time at Iowa.

If true and what EVERYBODY say how WORTHLESS Ellingson was then Fran's recruiting really REALLY stinks, kind of like his ability to coach. Ellingson should be the one transferring he brings less than zero to the court when he is on it.

this seems so obvious, I really don't understand where people are coming from? I'm not happy with the meltdown at the end of the season either, but you can't deny the guys that played brought Iowa back to respectability. There wasn't anyone sitting on the bench that would've made this team instantly better.

Fleming was always cheering his team on, and he also had the sense of frustration when they lost down the stretch.....If he thinks he can help another team out, then fine, we wish him luck. He came in advertised as a shooter and scorer, but sometimes when you read the fine print on the label it's not always what it seems....I hate it when players leave, but that's how it goes. We aren't in the practices with these kids, so we're not always privy to what's going on. I would rather say to myself, "I'm not fitting in", "And I need to find somewhere else to go, because I can contribute", then having a coach tell you you need to move on.

So if Fran's recruiting AND coaching stinks, how in the world did he pull us out of the Lick crater? If Fran can't recruit or coach how did he get us into 3 straight NCAA tournaments? If Fran can't recruit or coach, how has Iowa had 3 different players be 1st team All B1G team in the last 3 years? If Fran can't recruit or coach, how has Iowa finished 3rd in the B1G two consecutive years?

When you get rid of your #13 & #14th best players on your roster move on (yes, neither is as good as a walk on), that is actually HEALTHY for the program. Recruiting is an inexact science, and when you miss on a kid, the quicker the mistake is taken care of, the better off you are.

I didn't have time to weed through all the yuck on this thread. Shocked how many people are concerned about a couple average players leaving the program. If these 2 go on to be huge stars somewhere else or program changers feel free to dig this post up and dump on me in 2 years :D
Bottom line is both are perhaps "good" players at best in the Big 10. We have plenty like them or better. We need a couple studs, starting with the PG position. We need program changing players people. I for one am excited we have a couple open schollies to try and find an all big ten caliber player. I know our odds may be against us in finding one, but without the schollies open we have NO shot.

Maybe Jon can cull HN

The more I think about it, this is probably accurate

I get it.

We are supposed to be mad when we don't have scholarships available to get in on the transfer market ... AND we are supposed to get mad when zero-minutes guys leave, making the very room we whined about not having.

Being a fan is fun.

(Good luck to both kids transferring. I hope they have great careers wherever they land. No hard feelings.
