The Self-Limitations of Recruiting at Iowa

just goes to show how ignorant a poster can be.
Iowa brought in 6 JUCO's in January 3 of which were from IWCC

its also time to realize who Iowa goes up against in these talent laden teams, in Florida. they have every body in the SE going after these kids, it going to be hard to convice these kids to travel 1500 miles minimum to play FB and go to school, short of paying these kids how is KF and his staff supposed to get them.
you complain about the recruiting but nobody has come up with a legal way of convincing these kids to play here.

as for Dawson his reason for RS'ing is because there was a conflick with the Scjholarship he was on and the FB Scholarship,
nice try at trying to trash a kid and trash any Iowa recruit from the JUCO colleges

Forgot about Dawson. That makes two of the six JUCO players who are walk-ons and will likely never play significant snaps. Boy, are you clueless!

I am CLUELESS"
as I said there was a conflict between Schollies so they RS'd him to keep his other scholarship,
but in your thinking Hill was a wasted scholly because he ended up RS'ing. and every kid that Red shirts is a wasted scholly and will never play.

Yes, you are clueless. You take things people say, twist them, and formulate your own conclusion that is no where CLOSE to what they said (See post #27 in this thread, for example). Dawson does not have a football scholarship. Next year, he won't have a football scholarship either. Next year we will have at least 5 scholarship RB's on the depth chart ahead of him. 3 of them will be SO or younger. He's probably a great young man; I don't know the kid. But he is a player that will be likely recruited over and will likely never carry the ball as a Hawkeye.

Is there any way we could sell all of this talent in 2014 as to being a "return to glory" type of class in the state and the midwest in general? In the way that a Georgia did a couple years ago. Maybe a reach but getting all the big rated guys in the state to be friends and bond over going to Iowa?

ISU appears to have the best chance at achieving that at this point.

Excellent post by OP and responses from others. KF embodies the mentality of coaches who stay too long and become entitled. Most Iowa fans would be happy with 8-4 or 7-5 if with an upset sprinkled in and taking care of the Clowns. Instead of doing what every other program in the country does (get juco talent and go south for skill players), he doubles down on what hasn't worked in the past. He is not too far from Lickliter with respect to his belief he can win with lower tier recruits because he is such a great coach. Second, why would any skill player want to play for this guy? Maybe catch 2 TD passes and 400 yards receiving?

and who told you that bDawson will not get a schollarship or ever play.. this is your opinion and nothing more, KF came out this fall and explained the situation with Dawson and stated he was going to be RS'D this fall because of it to protect the other Scholarship.

"We ain't traveling no 1500 miles away from our Florida sunshine to play college football".

signed.......Brad Banks, CJ Jones, Abdul Hodge, Mo Brown, Antwan Allen, Fred Barr, Colin Cole, and Marcus Paschal

* Members of the 2002 Hawkeye team that finished #8 in the polls and went 11-2. Oh, did I mention they were all from Florida.

I think you are misunderstanding what I mean when I say Iowa "virtually" ignores the juco world. They don't completely ignore it. In the last 10 years, the Hawkeyes have signed 7 junior college players. As a general rule, the Hawkeyes don't recruit talented junior college players, even if it's at a position of need and a potential superstar, unless the fit is near perfect. Jared Ebert is another good example. He grew up in Iowa City and was a first team All-American at Iowa Western at a time when Iowa was losing 3 starting DLs. The Hawkeyes didn't even offer him. Now, there could have been a lot going on behind the scenes there. However, it is well documented that Iowa is very unaggressive regarding junior college recruiting. They have their reasons, but it is reality.

What possible reason would we have to have 6 or 7 scholarships tied up in running backs, all of them JR year or younger? I understand AIRBHG is a vengeful *******, but that is beyond unnecessary.

And what tells me Dawson won't play is that he is not as good as Weisman, Bullock, Canzeri, and doesn't have the potential that Garmon, Hill, and even Malloy do. There is a reason he went to junior college in the first place....he drug his feet too long in the recruiting process, and teams moved on and rescinded their scholarships. If he was a high enough priority, they would have let those offers stand...

You are the one who needs to get a clue. You think you are the only person on these message boards who knows what they are talking about, but in actuality you do not. You continually attack people when they have differing opinions than you, and you appear to have the comprehension skills of a 3rd grader.

A few observations on Iowa recruiting, especially about how the coaching staff has seemingly chosen to limit Iowa's recruiting in a variety of ways.

1. Iowa virtually ignores the juco world. Iowa Western CC is the premiere JuCo program in America; they finished an undefeated national championship season yesterday. They have 14 players who have FBS offers. Only one, RB Aaron Wimberly, has an Iowa offer, but he didn't receive his offer until after he had already committed to Iowa State. QB Jake Waters is down to Penn State and Kansas State; he's been called by some analysts the best juco QB in America. Waters grew up in Iowa, but he does not have an Iowa offer. If Bill O'Brien, who coached Tom Brady and helped turn Matt McGloin into the best passer in the Big Ten, thinks Waters is a scholarship level QB for Penn State, then I am 100% Waters is a scholarship level QB for Iowa. Yes, taking Waters would mean that Iowa has 5 QBs next year, two of whom would be 4th year juniors, but I don't think that is enough reason to ignore a guy who is as good at him.

2. Iowa virtually ignores the deep south, Florida, and California, three of the five areas of the country (the other areas are Texas and northern cities) that produce the most D1 talent. If you take a look at this map of Iowa's 2013 offers, you'll notice that almost all of Iowa's offers have gone to players in either Big Ten country or Texas. Yes, Iowa is likely to lose out on a vast majority of players they recruit from California, Florida, and the South, but, as the old saying goes, you can't win if you don't play.

Thoughts?

I know Barta cut the budget in 2010. I know there are smarter ways to do things. It is not hard, they just make it that way. The way recruiting has gone, you either have to think outside the box, or atleast try and keep up. Iowa can not get this done until they realize what they are doing is not enough. You can lead a horse to water.......

Iowa missed their golden opportunity in 2009 to sign a great 2010 class after winning the Orange Bowl. Could have gotten some good Florida talent. I can't believe that Iowa had a hard time in 2009 to convince high school kids to come to Iowa. They had plenty to pitch to recruits: BCS win, Great fan following, and NFL success.
