The Mayor picks off another transfer

Yep, I have no idea why a coach wouldn't try to always recruit the best possible players.. Obviously you'd better have a plan B, C, D, etc. for if (or when) you miss on your top target. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

What I don't want to see is Iowa throwing away scholarships on total projects just because they can't get anyone better. If that's the case, you'd better figure out ways to seal the deal on these guys, or replace your assistants with guys who CAN recruit, etc.

Absolutely. Isn't that how Iowa lost Ulis in the first place? Ulis was recruited hot and heavy by Iowa and Mich St., but his dad wanted Kentucky all along. Then Kentucky lost their top guy to SMU (well, actually China). Then Kentucky went after Ulis and both Iowa and Mich St. went looking elsewhere.

Hoiberg was an excellent college player, a good pro and then an NBA front-office guy. Zero coaching experience, which you stated. How is it not winning the lottery that he turns out to be a good coach? And PLEASE do NOT tell me that the best players make the best coaches! I'll throw out a ton of examples of how that is a load of..... well, it's a fallacy.

Fred brings in proven players from bad backgrounds and makes them gel. He is good at finding players that buy into his game plan too. He is obviously doing something right in Ames....Even though he has some bad characters on his team he makes it work. I would take Fred's style over Fran's since they win. You can overlook some of the terrible people on his team when they succeed. College basketball is different now. You have to accept and benefit from the one and done mindset.

So you would be firmly against hiring BJ Armstrong?

If so, I don't blame you. I was against the Hoiberg hire at first.

In ISU's case, it couldn't have gotten any worse under Hoiberg than it was with McD, so the odds of winning the lottery looked better than another McD hire. I don't think there were a lot of coaches beating down the door to take the job.

You must be young. Greg McD was right around .500. His style was boring to watch. But Eustache, while having a couple of good seasons, went 12-19 with a decent roster. And Floyd went 12-18 before bolting for the NBA. And while Orr had some good seasons, he also had some bad ones (10-18, 12-19) that were his and not on his predecessor Nance. Oh, and speaking of Nance, his best season was 14-13 and that was with future NBA forward Dean Uthoff on the roster. And his predecessor Trickey was 3-24.

Yeah, they could have gotten a LOT worse. And they were in much better shape than Iowa was when Fran was hired that year.

Self imposed ban???? I got da permaban over there. You are right though, last year at this time I did defend Iowa and say they were a good team and were a 4-6 seed type team. It sucks that Clown fans were correct and I was wrong.

I'm not sure how people can't look at see that Fran is totally underachieving with the talent he has. Last year was an epic failure and collapse, as that was a 4-6 seed talented team. This years team is a NCAA talented team, the N. Florida and any other coach that scouts us can see that. The issue is we are not getting the coaching to take advantage of what we have.

It sucks that this is my opinion now, just one short year removed from looking at a team that was a good seed in the NCAA, and looked like they have the pieces in the pipeline to keep those NCAA appearances coming year after year. Yet last year was what it was, and this year is looking like a huge uphill battle to make the NCAA tourney with 4 non con losses.

After the hilarity of the self imposed ban.

I give Fred all the credit in the world. There are always going to be talented transfers in this era of college bball, and he was out in front of it. What transfer wouldn't want to play for him. He has proven he can make it work and he is building a program that isn't going anywhere for a long time.
I wish I could say the same in Iowa City. It's just salt in the wound at this point. But I will eat crow. I thought Fran could do better than Fred because of experience and I didn't see the transfer route working the way it has. I couldn't have been more wrong and it pisses me off. Next comes apathy. Not there yet, but if the BIG season plays out the way I think it will, it may come to that. I hope I'm wrong again.

THIS! I'd give anything to have a program like ISU's right now. Fran should take note.

Maybe this is for another thread, but do you guys think that the recent issues with Iowa MBB are more a problem with talent, coaching, equal parts both, or something else?

I think, while it isn't overly talented, there are enough pieces on the roster to be successful. With the team that is in place, they could hang their hat on defense, turn teams over and cause easy baskets, and win. Play inside out with Woody, play Jok/Olaseni more, park White on the block, and spread the floor more so Gesell/Dickerson only have to drive and dish. I really think the pieces are there.

Yeah, they could have an identity like that. Virginia comes to mind. They are a fierce defensive team and turn that into points. I'd love Iowa to do that. But Fran just isn't that good of a coach. I mean the guy is mid-50s and before Iowa had never had a big time job. Think he's in over his head. His staff doesn't have recruiting ties either and that doesn't help. At least a guy on staff who is a recruiting barracuda (Andrew Francis was given this label by Fran BTW - LOL!) can make up for poor coaching at times.

Why are you trying to mislead people? You "Self-imposed banned" yourself, came back, then actually got banned.

Misleading who???? 99% of posters here don't give a shat about Clownfantasies.com.....except the Clown trolls like you

During BB season, I won a bet with Cytwins, which he honored and he put on the Woody avatar I gave him. A few days after ISU lost in the elite 8 and the bet was over, I said I'm out. I came back just before the football season started. Posting over there was bad enough as it was, I wasn't going to subject myself to a whole offseason on Clowntardation. When I came back I was then banned for saying something like I had to lower my IQ to post over there to fit in. Thin skin is the name of the game on that site.

BTW what is your Clowntastic name you post under for the team you root for? I'm guessing it is Jamby, or Cydude, or some other d!pshit who I PWNED time and time again.

Matt Thomas made the 2nd most threes ever by a freshman in ISU history and started a number of games for a top 15 program...as a freshman. Not sure why posters are acting like he is chopped liver. Dude was a freshman. The kid will get hot in games and will absolutely wreck teams single handily this year. Not to mention he seems to remind hoiberg of himself. Hoiberg's offense is predicated on floor spacing and you need elite shooters. Thomas isn't going anywhere his role will expand year by year.

Even though that is absolutely correct.....Unless he is the the reincarnation of Jeff Hornacek or FH he will be and always will be stuck in a rotation with 2 or 3 other dudes. He may "wreck" teams one game and barely see the floor the next. It will come to an "mutual agreement" with FH whether it is worth it for him to stick around or not.

We will agree to disagree. Matt isn't a star at this point he is 10 games into his sophomore year with a top 10 team in the country. It is going to be competitive for minutes. I think next year he will earn more minutes and you'll see more 3 guard lineups of Morris with a combo of long/thomas/cooke. Well have to wait and see if hoiberg gets another kane/Bdj during transfer season. I think Iowa state is in good shape in the backcourt regardless. My wish is for cheick diallo or a top tier transfer forward. I'd be willing to place a friendly wager thomas ends his carer as a clone and would even give 2:1 odds on that.

You're on......we can come up with the stakes down the road.

You need to give up this idea that Thomas is an "elite shooter". Kid shot 36% from the field and 33% from 3 last year. He is shooting 36% from the field this year and 33% from 3 this year.....Those are Mike Gesell numbers, not elite shooters numbers.

He is what he is, and that is one of ISU worse 3pt shooters. BDJ, Long, Niang, Hogue they all are shooting at least 5% better from 3, and in BDJ and Niangs case nearly 7% better. Next year Cooke will be eligible (46% FG% 45% from 3), and Deonte Burton (48% FG%) will be eligible come end of Dec. Plus who knows who else Fred will snag at the end of the year and he hits transfer season.

All that adds up to a $250 bet from me on Thomas sticking all four years at ISU at your proposed 2-1 odds......no way Thomas makes it 4 years and graduates under Freddy.

Probably because Jon needs alls the site traffic he can get...

He doesn't need any one persons traffic. He banished a slew of the highest traffic people over a year ago.....no reason to keep around a d!pshit who's Clown troll is tired and old anyway.

I would say 2nd in made three pointers made in ISU history as a frosh next to maybe our best pure shooter ever in jake Sullivan is pretty dang elite company and a great start. If you think Bdj and especially hogue are better three point shooters than thomas that is truly ridiculous. Naz long is an assasin the guy is going to go down as one of my favorite isu players ever. Next to naz there is no one else I want on the team shooting an open three than thomas. Stats don't always tell the story opposing teams know thomas is a 3 point specialist his shots are more often than not very contested. Jake sullivan only shot 38% from three his senior year. Was he not an elite shooter because of his percentage? Probably more so he was a marked man that spaced the floor and was asked to hit contested jumpers.

Not to mention hoiberg says repeatedly thomas is the best pure shooter he's ever coached. I'll trust his opinion a little more than yours. He shot is pretty that is undeniable. He needs a big game or two to get his confidence rolling.

I thought Thomas would be better this year but I just don't see it. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if he didn't end up transferring.

And Jake Sullivan would struggle to get minutes on this team, also. Sullivan was far more effective coming off screens than he was as a spot up shooter.
