The List: My Two Thru Five & More

I have to throw this out there what about Tim Floyd. I know he got in some trouble at usc and i don't know the whole extent of it. The guy can coach and he will win. We have all seen it.

Spank & others....just curious, but why do you not think Keno could do the job as well, if not better than his father? A lot of cheap shots at him by many, but not one piece of evidence to support any of your statements.

I don't mind if you don't want him as coach, but to simply flame seems childish to me. At least attempt to make your case, as it seems that's only fair to the many on this board that think he would be a good choice.

If it's his lack of experience, then debate that. If it's because you know him personally and don't like him, then state your case.

If you don't think Chris Davis or Rodell Davis (former Hawk) would help make-up a good staff, then provide some reasoning.

At least make an attempt.....but, I guess it's easy too just sit back and not put your own list out on the boards for public ridicule.

These "stop by" posts that many are making are just misinformed.

1. Not enough experience.

2. No proven track record. Sure he had a great season at Drake (with someone else's players, and a good season at Providence (with someone else's players), but he lost 19 games this past season. Yikes!

3. Just because he plays an up-tempo style doesn't make him a top candidate.

4. Just because his daddy is Tom Davis doesn't make him a top candidate.

5. Will he really bring fans back to Carver? Who knows? Maybe initially as a "curiosity", but if the losing continues, they won't stay.

6. Why "settle" for a Keno Davis? Why not try for a coach that OTHER schools would want to hire? Proven names. Think Iowa couldn't get a top coaching prospect? Who would have thought Johnny Orr would go to Iowa State. Barta should set his sights HIGH. Raise the bar. Don't just settle for a Keno Davis because he is Tom Davis' son.....and that is the ONLY reason he is on any Hawk fans' list....because if he wasn't Davis' son he would be on NOBODY's list!

No offense but....you wanted reasons why not Keno....give me reasons WHY Keno would be a better hire than someone like Pearl, Barbee, Drew, Pastner, etc.

eccpanther.....I think Lon Kruger would be great. A wealth of experience. From what I've read, he seems very happy in Vegas.

I appreciate the point about lack of head coaching experience for Keno. I think that's the only knock on him, but he still has more experience that quite a few other names being brought up.

By the way, those were his players at Drake. He was an assistant who recruited them. If it wasn't for Keno, Adam Emmenecker would have never seen the floor.

Also, he won 19 games his first year at Providence and was left with only 3 scholarship players for year 2. It was an entirely new team, which by the way is very talented. If he does not end up at Iowa, he will accomplish great things in the Big East shortly.

See your assuming that he is going to do well. We don't need an assumption coach. We had that with Alford and Lick. Sure it looks like things are going in the right direction for Keno, but it will take time to find out. Again I state we don't have time. We need a "sure thing." I don't get why people don't understand that!

Go and look at the Baylor situation he inherited....here is a link...then get back to me.

Baylor University basketball scandal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm not saying he hasn't done anything I think you & Dace mention him multipule times before March 11. (or maybe I just relisten to the podcast to much while working). I just think I'm wanting more of an Iowa tie. If the person isn't previously tied to Iowa, if successful, I have a feeling the coach would jump when a bigger name comes calling.

also listen to your list made me feel better about it then just reading.

As for the hate on Keno, I'm calling it right now. Assuming he is still at Providence next year, they'll finish no worse then 3rd in the conference, and make it to the Sweet 16. no facts, just a gut feeling.

Also I have always felt that Pearl didn't get a real offer last go round. I'm probably reading to much into things trying to find the possibility that Barta will try to get Pearl.

What GB said in the press conference yesterday about "money not being an issue". I'm starting to think he may have asked what it would take to get him here but didn't ahve the finances to give Pearl what he asked for. We weren't getting 22 Million at the time from the BTN which, iirc, hadn't launched yet. Money may have been an issue before but it wont be now. Could the money comment be directed toward Pearl saying "tells us what you want and you'll get it" or am I reading to much into it.

I disagree with the idea that the coach has to have an up tempo style of offense. I think the keys are communication and people skills (the person needs to sell the program to the players and the fans for hope), integrity (let's face it, Iowa folks can be tough to please with a coach they think has integrity), flexibility (knowing the personel he has on the team and play the style that fits that - from game to game or season to season), and leadership (someone who can be a leader who the players listen to and want to stay in the program for their entire eligibility). Experience at a BCS level as a head coach may help with these traits, but may not be a requirement.

I don't think the last coach was fired because he wasn't up tempo. He was fired because he did not win enough, did not connect with fans and players, and the hope for the future did not seem bright.

I am not good at listing candidates because I do not know these traits for most of the coaches listed. I think it can be short sighted to list style of play as one of the things a candidate needs to have. As someone who called into the Miller and Deace show mentioned today, we have one of the most boring styles of football (no spread offense, basic defense), but it is popular and we fill the stands because it is working.

I think people need to get used to the idea that if successful, Iowa's next basketball coach could leave for greener pastures.

It's not a destination job for a great coach right now. Based on the last 30 years, I'm not sure it ever was.

I have no problem with a great coach turning the program around and then leaving. I'll take that any day over a mediocre coach who views the Iowa job as a permanent destination.

Pearl is clearly the number one slamdunk choice, however if he says no(and most likely will) then I feel that Keno Davis is the most logical choice of the young up and coming coaches that would say yes. He is very sharp, energetic and his hire would create a positive buzz with the program. He recruited the talent that led Drake to their magical run a couple years back and he has improved on his Dad's system that WORKED at Iowa. Keno will be the next coach at Iowa and it will work.

Where can i get ahold of you regarding Providence finishing no worse than 3rd in the Big East next year ; I'll let you name the amount . You might want to back off and rethink this !!

Don't take him for everything... others may want some of this action.

Where I'm currently working - down at IMG Academies in Bradenton, FL - the basketball staff has told me Tony Barbee is the guy to go after (if Bruce Pearl does not want the job).

Sounds like a real intriguing candidate

Re: Josh Pastner

Would his recruits to Memphis be able to follow him to Iowa like many of the Virgina Tech wrestlers followed Brands to Iowa? Just curious.
