The Legacy of Larry Bird

Reports are coming out of Indianapolis that Larry Bird is going to resign as President of the Indiana Pacers. Bird was the 2012 NBA Executive of the Year. That adds to an incredible basketball legacy that rivals the individual legacy of any person in any sport. Bird has been named, at one time or another, the NBA Executive of the Year, NBA Coach of the Year, NBA MVP, and College Basketball Player of the Year. Along with these individual accomplishments, Bird played for the 1979 college runners-up, 3 NBA champions, and the Dream Team; he also coached the Pacers to the 2000 NBA Finals. He has had an absolutely incredible career.

Yes, and when you look at all the great Hall of Fame players from the '80s who made the NBA what it is today, Bird is the only one who has had great success as a coach or GM/President. In his case, he's been wildly successful at both.

He did an amazing job coaching the Pacers - they were one shot from knocking Jordan and the Bulls out of the Eastern Conference finals.

As President, he rebuilt the roster a couple times. A lot of people forget, but they might have had the East's best roster when Artest decided to go into the stands in Auburn Hills. After that night, Bird was eventually forced to strip apart that team and rebuild. He's put together a pretty impressive roster once again.

this is a power play. he has no contract, and is coming off the 'manager or executive of the year'.

name the person with a more impressive resume, any sport.

It might be a power play, but there has been buzz in the past that Bird would be on the list of possible commissioners if David Stern ever retires. Maybe Bird knows something the public doesn't.

The only person I could think of with a comparable resume was Joe Torre. He was a 1-time MVP as a player and a 4-time champion as a manager.

I'll always remember him is someone without drive or fire down the stretch who couldn't close out finals appearances against the lakers.

you should add that he's an ugly, slack-jawed hoosier with bad skin
