The B1G Speaks

So will he allow his kid to play or not? That’s the 5000 lbs. pink elephant in the room.

If the B1G is going to back pedal on this now is the time to do it. You have a 7-10 window to change your mind and be ready to go by the end of September.

From ESPN:

Some have criticized Warren because his son, Powers Warren, is a tight end for Mississippi State, and the SEC is one of the three Power 5 conferences that have continued to push forward in an attempt to play this fall.

"We've had many difficult discussions as a family," Kevin Warren said. "My focus from a Big Ten perspective is what is the right thing to do every day for our student-athletes. That's my focus, and it has to remain my focus."

When asked directly if he will let Powers play this fall, Warren said, "he just started practice yesterday. We'll continue our family discussions."

Randy Wade, father of Ohio State star defensive back Shaun Wade, said he's not satisfied with Warren's letter and still plans to peacefully protest outside Big Ten headquarters Friday in Rosemont, Illinois. "It's going down now," Wade said. "I had one poster made. I'm going to have two now."

Randy Wade said he takes issue with the fact that Warren's son is going to play for Mississippi State, while his son is sidelined at Ohio State. And Wade says he realizes his protest may be for naught.

"I'm not saying anything's going to change by me going up there, but I can't stand for uncertainty," he said. "Uncertainty is not enough. I need to know what percentages need to go down, how you want things to happen, to make things better."

Warren won't be at the office on Friday, telling ESPN the conference office has been closed due to the pandemic with employees working remotely.

"I'm sure at the appropriate time in the appropriate setting, we'll have an opportunity to meet," Warren said.

WTH does that even mean? Warren was pretty clear the B1G decision would not be revisited?

There's been talk that they will start preseason training after Thanksgiving when all B1G schools will go to all online learning until mid to late January. The season could start at the beginning of January.

I am amazed that people are so concerned, even critical, with Warren’s personal family decisions. It is none of our business. His leadership role in the BT concerns 14 Universities and thousands of athletes. Hate his professional decision of course. Family is family.

If there is college football this fall there will be 4 power conferences playing it.

You have a 7-10 day window to start eating crow now. Might as well get to it.

Not trying to be an asshole, but you don’t see the conflict of interest here?

Regarding the B1G, it really is not his decision. He works for the Presidents/Chancellors of the 14 universities. I get it, he has say but they are two different decisions.

So how much pull and/or sway does he have? Is he just a figurehead that the B1G throws out there......anti-Delaney?

It is all about the MONEY I don't care what BS they spew out. Stands with 15,000 people won't pay many bills and maybe they can fill em in the spring.

Safety of the players? Please! Players that are amongst the healthiest individuals walking the face of the earth, that are being sheltered as much as possible and TESTED regularly lining up once a week against another team of players doing the same, is putting their lives at risk. Ya right. Better keep em out of class and off the streets then.

Glad the High School GIRLS and boys in Iowa got to enjoy softball and baseball this summer, complete with State Championships. Went to a State Championship Game. Was pretty normal. Stands were packed, attendance was same as always. Girls got to fulfill their dreams. Anybody read about the big outbreak afterwards? Or how many girls ended up on life support? No, me neither.

You mean for the teams that actually got to finish their seasons and not some of the top ranked teams that had their seasons end prematurely. My opinion is after cancelling all the spring sports, baseball and softball were nothing more than lab rats because there was no way that they'd be able to play football in the fall if they couldn't figure out a way to get through a baseball season.

Personally I'm glad the kids got to have a season and I'm glad that there weren't more teams who's seasons were cut short, but at the same time I felt it was an absolute gamble that could have easily had a much different outcome. There's a reason we were one of the few states nationwide to offer any high school sports over the summer and I don't think it's because those that pulled the plug had bad information. I think we were very fortunate.

That's a good question and I don't have the answer. But I believe that this is the sort of decision that is of such magnitude that it is above his pay grade and the leaders of the universities were the ones making the call. My own thought is that as much as safety and health of the individual was a factor, the threat of liability that would have been potentially placed on each school had someone had a bad outcome was just a much of a factor. I read somewhere that something like 10 B1G athletes have been diagnosed with myocarditis. That was at the forefront of their thinking, IMO.

This is beyond football. Starting indoor practice in the winter will lead to more cases. Who will decide whether someone can play. What about deliberately trying to infect certain players?

Actually Iowa wasn't one of the few States it was the only State that had seasons this summer, just like every other year since Iowa is the ONLY STATE that has their seasons in the summer. And there were just a handful of teams that had their seasons affected. The VAST MAJORITY did not. Did you hear of any deaths or hospitalizations of any kind from any of the hundreds of teams that played between softball and baseball? It would have been front page news! At least get your facts straight. The lab rats must have just been really lucky.

But I do think by all means the teams from the nursing homes should not have a season this year.

I didn’t take your comment as an insult. I just don’t think a business decision and a family decision represent a conflict of interest. Two different worlds.
