2010 question

Watching 2010 Insight Bowl highlights, wondering about the 2010 season and the future.
If Wehger hadn't left due to baby drama
If Robinson had kept his nose clean,
If Clayborn hadn't over muscled himself and had to take plays off, could iowa have done better than the Insight Bowl and had better seasons after?

I think it was because of seasons like 2010 that Iowa figured out that a 8-man DL rotation was the best option for Iowa's bend but don't break defense. You want DL players taking 50% of downs off so that they are still fresh at the end of the game. Also this way DL can give 100% on the downs they do play.

So in 2010 let Clayburn take 50% of the downs off. Just make sure in 2009 he is playing on punt return coverage against PSU.

Not sure about the future 2011 and beyond. I've heard it said that 2010 fell short because of injuries and lack of depth at LineBacker. And Norm's unwillingness to leave the 40-3...sometimes not getting the best players on the field because of that.

That seemed to be a tough lesson to learn... I remember our defenses doing a lot more breaking then bending in the 4th qs of games back then due to not having any pass rush... You can't expect DLmen to be able to play 60 plus snaps and be as fresh at the end as they are at the beginning. And if your backups aren't good enough to play 10-20% of the snaps then that's on coaches.

IIRC, Jeff Tarpinian was hurt and James Morris had to start/play as a Freshman.

Yes, I believe that is true. Although Morris eventually turned into a pretty good LB by the time he was a senior, he was clearly overwhelmed when forced to play Middle LB as a freshman. I am not sure, but I think back then the defensive adjustments and calls on the field were all made by the Mike, which Morris had to do as freshman. If I am wrong, I am sure somebody will correct me.
