Now that there is a playoff has anyone heard KF say that getting to it is the teams goal?

I feel it should be most every teams goal and certainly Iowas. Yet realistically their schedule will make that an impossibility. The schedule they've had the last 2 yrs is terrible and even if they run the table they won't get a seat at it this year. I think goals should be adjusted and they certainly can't just say win the BIG west. That's great yes that goes hand in hand if you get to the final four. But lets not shoot so low. So how do you shoot for that goal? I think they gotta drop ISU and get tougher opponents in the non conference. I understand the BIG scheduling is what it is pretty much but control what you can. And the ISUs UNIs (thankfully they aren't playing fcs teams anymore)and MAC schools of the world just don't help Iowa. This isn't about helping the other schools financially it's a cut throat business now. Forget the whole rivalry stuff I can care less about that. I want Iowa to be not good but great and a national program. This is a step that direction albeit a small one.

To help student athletes get a world class education is an important goal. So is winning conference and national championships. This team appears to be very hungry for a championship, and I know they have a goal of beating whomever is on the schedule, and winning a national championship!

Until Iowa can handle ISU and MAC teams without fail, I don't know if it's really going to help to schedule Tennessee, Virginia Tech, or Baylor in non-conference games.

If Iowa had gone undefeated in the regular season and beaten OSU in the BoneG final, I think they would've had a legit shot at the playoffs.

Considering we could pretty easily go 2-2 or even 1-3 in the non-con this year, I'm not sure we should talk about dropping anybody who we might have a chance of beating.

Speaking of steps in the right direction - how about beating ISU on a regular basis, and demolishing MAC teams first.

Win and losses are not the only thing. Championships are not important. We want them to improve and compete. And do really well in organic chemistry. If this happens, then the teams goals have been achieved.

The goal should always be to win the B1G west, and then the chips fall where they will. If you can then win the championship game, maybe you make the playoffs, maybe you don't.

If Iowa were to drop the ISU game, I would want to play 3 cupcakes and then 1 other good Power 5 team. Since that won't happen I think it is reasonable to play the Pitt's or Arizona's of the world along with the ISU game. You don't see SEC teams playing 10 Power 5 teams a year for a reason....it doesn't help you at all.

Well sure beating those teams is what we should be doing but you don't get any credit for having done so. Beating teams like ISU by 14 doesn't do anything for us. If say we played and beat a team like Missouri instead... I think going forward that they just really need to schedule tougher teams to give yourself a chance. Other schools similar to Iowa should be looking to do the same thing. If you miss getting in the final 4 because of a non conference game or two you played was basically pointless as a fan base that'd really get on my nerves. I'd rather play and lose to a good team with the goal being what it should be then play and win (or in half the cases lose)to ISU... That's just me

I disagree. Whatever you do, whether it's academics, sports or anything else you should always try to be the best at it. Unless you push yourself to the fullest you may never achieve your true potential. Championships are important. It's recognition that you achieved what you set out to do.

See I think that's not setting your goals high enough to me... If you set yourself up to get in the final 4 your winning the BIG west already.. I'm not just ok with maybe getting in or maybe not... Due to not trying anyway

The top teams in the SEC just won't have to based on how tough their league is and how the 'media' will always perceive them. But the middle of the pack ones to the bottom of it may and I think that scheduling for the middle tier teams all over will change because of it. Maybe not all at once depending on how long this current format goes. If it stays 4 teams I think scheduling will change a lot.

Instead, he built the program, built some momentum, and now is on the correct side of the arc. Iowa needs to get back to that position first, then they can start talking about upgrading their schedule.

Yes I am. I'm fully aware of where the program currently is and it irks me to think that with the weak schedule we have next yr that 6 to 8 wins seems to be the 'realistic' goal.... That alone should have KF on the hot seat in his 16th or 17th whatever season he's on. But yea pre final 4 what Pinkel did was smart. I don't think scheduling now will allow you to take into account that so much. Beating cupcakes will help you get to your middle tier bowl games but that's not what the overall goal should be.

Every year there will be 5 to 9 teams that will think they have an argument to be in it. Last yr if Iowa ran the table they would have not gotten in. I think a team or two with one or even two losses would have gotten in over us just due to how weak of a schedule we had. The one and only big win Iowa could have had would have been OSU in the BIG title game. I don't think that'd have been enough....

Like some said about his recent [moral victory] comments, does he really need to state it as a goal? I mean, derKirkFer is a man of integrity, honor and is highly competitive. I think we can all safely assume to know what he means by not stating it and, by not stating it, he really, really wants it and believes his team can achieve it.

Whats funny about this is that the 4 game series was supposed to happen in 2005-2008.

In 2005, the game probably would have been tough. Iowa had talent but underperformed as they usually have under Ferentz
In 2006, Missouri would have probably killed Iowa, Iowa did not have a good team that season, Missouri was 8-5
In 2007, Missouri would have killed Iowa
In 2008, it depends on when the game was played. Early = Missouri wins, late = Iowa wins.

Back on topic. If Iowa ever has goals to get to the playoff they will need to drop Iowa State and/or add at least a mid level Power 5 team that occasionally rises to the top of their conference standings. The B1G West is far too weak to rely on in the SoS department and the overall the B1G is still pretty weak outside of Ohio State & Michigan State. Although Michigan and Penn State have the tools in place to rise up quickly.

Hayden Fry teams used to blow these teams away with scores like 56 - 10 and subs were getting valuable PT in the 2nd half. Back-up QB's were getting valuable game experience as well.

After the way the Iowa team was treated by the players and fans the last time the 2 teams played a series I don't believe the Iowa should play Missouri again in the regular season. Their actions were very unsportsmanlike and very dangerous.

First of all, the odds of us making the playoffs if we went undefeated last year were probably 100%. Second of all, our chances of making the playoffs by going undefeated with an easy schedule and not getting left out are about 10 times better than our chance of getting in by running through a tough schedule. Even Alabama would be left out if they have3 or 4 losses.

Do you think OSU and Alabama were "Not trying" to get into the playoffs, because they played completely avg. to awful teams in the non con last year?

You don't have to play premier non conference competition. If you go through your conference and non conference with 1 loss, you will be in the conversation no matter who you played.
