student section

I had season tickets all 4 years I was there (all Alford years) and the student section was always full/almost full. Those Alford teams were pretty consistent with their play. I think, in addition to some of the reasons stated previously, the team's erratic play is a deterrent for some people. Are you going to get the team that destroyed Nebraska on the road, or the team that looked like they had no idea what they were doing (UNI, @NW, Minny at home). As someone who buys football season tickets and commutes from Des Moines it's extra frustrating when you put all the effort in and then get to watch a big turd. I don't want to drive to CHA from Des Moines on a work night in the cold to watch the team play like crap for no apparent reason.

I would be curious to know where students are seated in other BT venues. There seems to be an assumption that student seating at other places is close to the court, along the sides, rather than in the "endzone." I know that is NOT true at the Kohl Center, where the student section is just like Iowa's. However, the capacity for students is about 1/4 what it is at CH. Money talks.

I think this thread covers most of the reasons students don't attend well at Iowa. The conclusion would be that you cannot blame it on a single dramatic item.

Huck, you don't seem to understand, without the Izone, Izzo would be a sub .500 coach. All we need to do is move the student section and we will be a perpetual top 25 team. Why doesnt Barta understand this?

I also think it has to do, to some extent, with the increased percentage of students from out of state who are at Iowa, even compared to just 10 years ago. Many going to school didn't grow up Hawkeye fans, so it's not as big of a deal to a larger percentage of the student population. Over 50% of the freshman this year are from out of state. 10 years ago it was significantly less, 20 years ago it was something like 25%. Not casting aspersions over the whole of out of state students, but with a larger percentage who didn't grow up in Iowa, and weren't inundated with Hawkeyedom, it can be a harder sell to get them to come to games - success matters more in getting students to attend.

As a student you can take the red or blue route to the game, but it isnt for the express purpose of taking people to the game.

I saw the MD/WI game and noticed the vibrant student section; the place was up for grabs! Also, I am going to drop an email to the Asst' AD and suggest he talk to the Cambus folks about special buses for students to get to CHA next year. I think that could really make a difference. I remember walking from the Quonset Hut that we lived in (where Hancher is now) to the old field house and it was indeed a challenge! Maybe some of you could join in my efforts? Jon Miller...could you help out as well?

They will never move the student section to behind the benches because they're not going to kick the biggest donors out of their seats. They can make the sections behind both baskets (like at ISU), so that there is a distraction for the visiting team on both ends. They can also make student tickets free every game like most schools outside of Iowa do.

The most important thing is making it easier to get to the arena from campus and downtown.
