Strange things are afoot at Minne

Smart... Anytime you turn on the news and see a story about kids getting abused and or coaches being accused of stuff I just think to myself as an adult coach why even put yourself in the position. Cover your own. That's all you can do anymore.
I don’t even give players rides. No exceptions. I tell parents that too. That rule goes back to youth coaching and I stick to it still.

I’ll stick around with your player as long as it takes until a parent or buddy shows up to give him a ride, but I’m not going to transport.

At least in Nebraska, coaches are not allowed to have 1-1 texts or phone calls with players. They also cannot meet players off campus 1-1. Has to be a parent or second coach involved. Times have changed.
At my last school, I coached 8th grade girls basketball. There were 2 coaches that were equally paid. The girl that coached with me knew absolutely nothing about basketball to the point where she didn't even do anything at practice. The only reason she was there was to be the female and I was perfectly fine with that. Basically, her job was to cover my ass.

Our has that as our policy, no questions asked. In the last 10 years or so, I've had 2 players that live next door to me and 2 that live across the street from me. 2 more 2 houses down the street. The school says that I am absolutely not allowed to give them rides home (our diamond is in a different town as our HS).

I agree in principle with everything above. The caveat is this. When you choose to be part of a team/organization/etc, you agree to sacrifice some of your individuality for the collective mission. That's the piece that so many today reject (frequently under ridiculous premises). The idea of being part of something bigger than yourself doesn't resonate with many of the self-focused.
Solid.

It’s not even a school policy where I’m at. It’s my deal. I try to leave no grey areas open whatsoever.

Totally agree. Like having a girl coming in my classroom to get math help. I have a table set up close to the door and prop the door open. That's the one that scares me. Too late in my career to have to deal with any of that bull shit.

Absolutely. As a teacher I wouldn't want to be caught being alone with any kid anymore. All they have to do is allege and make up something. And if they can get any time alone with you with no witnesses turning it into a he said/she said it doesn't even matter if they recant the story later. The damage will be done. I remember a teacher in Pleasantville yrs ago that had exactly that happen. I can't remember how many yrs later it was she ended up recanting her story but guy was 100% innocent. But lost his job and reputation. I don't need to tell you guys how in small town Iowa that 2nd part is the kicker. There's no making that right or getting that back.

I can't believe that there were such disgusting people in our society that we had to implement stuff like this, but all of these rules are written due to a whole bunch of very specific cases of bad shit going down. When I was in high school the principal lived down the street from me and every time he saw me going to the bus he would give me a ride to school or home. No one would have thought twice of it back then but now that guy would get fired within 30 seconds of pulling into the parking lot. It's really unfortunate because despite being a little shit and troublemaker I actually came to be decent friends with the principal from those rides and for kids who get stuck walking when the coach or a teacher or a principal lives right next door they probably can't understand the policy and think the person doesn't care. It's gotta be rough on those kids who have a rough situation at home.

Totally agree. The school is just following suit with the Ankenys of the world that may need this kind of things because so many of the parents were born with silver spoons shoved up their asses and are looking for a reason to get a teacher/coach that gave Aiden a bad grade or didn't play him enough or at the right position. 4 of these 6 kids I mentioned babysat my kids at some point. I coached with a parent of another kid and I work with a parent of the last kid. I guarantee there would be no problems at all.

Holy chit. I never really thought about this crap and the concerns that goes with that now days. Gees.

Yes, I grew up in a small town, and there is some shunning that goes on, similar to an Amish community. Maybe not to that religious extreme but once one's reputation is damaged and someone wears a scarlet letter, they're screwed and might as well move somewhere different and hope whatever doesn't follow them.

When you really think about it, this is really the downfall of our society now. Not being able to trust certain individuals or certain age groups with others for various reasons. Some is legit as there are a lot of pervs out there that can't be trusted, much as we've pretty much have had free reign porn since the advent of the internet. Gets people ramped up.

Then, the fact that we just can't now trust others is a damning path and I'm not sure can be reversed at this point. We just keep degrading as a society and it's bad when an educator can't just pick a kid up on the way to school and have an opportunity to check in and chat for a bit. I get it but it's just sad when one really thinks about it.

I clipped my thoughts a bit...but WTF?

When kids are told there are no wrong answers, your feelings are more important than facts, everyone gets a trophy, and it's hip to be a victim... this is the shift in mentality that you get. People called that out years ago...and now it's manifesting.

Nailed it again. It's the mindset of kids now that is so disturbing. Even more disturbing, is the parents had that when they were younger and now are raising kids. You are so right about certain schools whose parents were brought up that way. I live in and have kids going to one of the more affluent schools in our area or Iowa and you can see it. It is true. If the kid or parent is uncomfortable, they throw a fit or presume they will get special treatment. They want an out card. Much of it has nothing to do with education at all but mostly sports. It can get disgusting.

Now you go over a school district which is large in itself, which is primarily made up of rural kids and parents, I don't think you see anything near that. That work ethic is still there with the parents and kids I think. They don't have chit just handed to them. It's just has a different feel. The true study of that social dynamic is rather interesting.

With the coming of the Woke Culture the ultrasensitive

Have the ability to damage and/or destroy a career

One complaint, true or not, is allowing someone with a nasty nature
to railroad someone's livelihood

And the situation will follow someone forever

It's happened to comedians. They can't tell off color jokes anymore because someone will cause a huge stink. I have respect for the comedians who don't give a flying F and do it anyway.

It's been building for a very long time. The notion that we had to x-ray our Halloween candy or that we would be kidnapped by a stranger completely twisted the risk perspective of everyone born from about 1975 onward. We are told to put our trust in various entities, be they political or business oriented, but not to trust our neighbors. It's completely backwards.

Yeah he ended up going to Newton to try and start new. But he couldn't keep teaching. I think he went to Pella to work after all that.

Yep, about the time Johnny Gosch and Eugene Martin were abducted. Completely put the fright of fear in the parents and kids of that time. This was something we really haven't had to deal with up to that point. The x-raying Halloween candy came not much after that, as you point out.
