Strange things are afoot at Minne

I've noticed there is a place in the world for the discontented. It takes a lot of people to build a program, just one to burn it down. There just doesn't seem to be a sense of proportion these days.

Totally agree. The school is just following suit with the Ankenys of the world that may need this kind of things because so many of the parents were born with silver spoons shoved up their asses and are looking for a reason to get a teacher/coach that gave Aiden a bad grade or didn't play him enough or at the right position. 4 of these 6 kids I mentioned babysat my kids at some point. I coached with a parent of another kid and I work with a parent of the last kid. I guarantee there would be no problems at all.
Can we turn this into an Ankeny roast thread? If so, I have a lot to say about South Ames, the ass crack of Central Iowa.

It's been building for a very long time. The notion that we had to x-ray our Halloween candy or that we would be kidnapped by a stranger completely twisted the risk perspective of everyone born from about 1975 onward. We are told to put our trust in various entities, be they political or business oriented, but not to trust our neighbors. It's completely backwards.
You've gotta love when suburban moms get their hands on completely unfounded fear porn. My step mother about murdered me when she found a DnD book in my bag in the early 2000s.

The only razor blades ever found in candy were put there by the kids parents. 99% of bad shit that happens to kids is because of family.

Front Office Sports (FOS) is the source. Lol. Nothing to see here.
When I saw the phase “ disgraced coach” referencing Doyle my shields went up immediately about the writer of this piece. It’s a hit piece where someone is a victim looking for a payout with the writer looking to make a name for themselves. Many of the allegations against Fitz were completely unsubstantiated. Don’t like Fleck but being vain is not a crime. This type of story is going to run rampant through college football, I predicted this after Iowa’s issues but looks like I was right just wrong about the time. There will be no shortage of former players who justly or unjustly had bad experiences at major sports programs across the country.

Yep, about the time Johnny Gosch and Eugene Martin were abducted. Completely put the fright of fear in the parents and kids of that time. This was something we really haven't had to deal with up to that point. The x-raying Halloween candy came not much after that, as you point out.

I told my children when they were in elementary school

To beware of and be on constant alert for especially vans and any automobile following
them slowly, and to go to the nearest house and ring the doorbell

Put the fear of God in them, told them they could be taken away and we would never
see them again

Consequently they were on constant alert

I was starting 5th grade when Martin was abducted. The thought for most of us wasn't IF we were going to get kidnapped but when. They did scare the shit out of us and I'm glad they did. We practiced asking who was on the phone when we answered it, there were blue stars in windows as safe houses to run into in case someone strange approached them.

It's some scary shit. I have 2 girls that are 10 and 13. We live on a dead end street with about 10 other kids on it. I don't know if that makes it safer or not, but it feels better since we have no traffic. If we see a vehicle we don't know, everyone pays close attention. Not necessarily out of fear or caution, but small town curiosity.

I remember getting taught about these blue stars in elementary school, but I can't honestly say I ever saw one in the wild, and I don't recall ever actually being shown an example, so ~seven year old me wondered how I was supposed to tell a legit blue star from random ornaments.

I remember when the cops came for a presentation and told us "find a house with a blue star if someone is following you."

Young OK4P - "Mr. Officer, what is to keep some bad man from hanging a blue star on his house?"

It's an unsettling feeling being a youngster and having the realization that no one is actually in charge.

This thread has taken on odd turn, but I guess I will go with it. If you haven't yet heard Gary Gulman's take on the 1980's kidnapping hysteria from his Great Depresh show, I highly recommend:

Not sure I'd use the word "Hoax". Gulman can be pretty entertaining.

Lotta Blue Stars in my neighborhood, somewhat rural but they are there

My children at a young age, elementary school would walk around the hood, same as their
friends and classmates, but they were taught about the dangers of being young and nieve
and to be aware of potential danger

They ran to a Blue Star house one time, just in case, the woman at the door welcomed them in
and gave them cookies while she watched out the door to be certain that the offending
vehicle was long gone
