Stop telling people how to feel

I responded to a tweet today that got under my skin.

So you are responding to a tweet and then went off on hawk fans. Fans have been fanatics since the dawn of history rooting for ancient wrestlers, fighters, runners, gladiators, etc. People are clannish and they root for their kind. Now of days that takes the form of rooting for your team because people tend not to get killed in this format. So if people want to get a little over zealous in their fandom let them and dont get too bent out of shape about it.

Yes it is stupid when when a team wins a championship and their fans tear apart their city but more often than not fandom is fairly innocent.

I am 3 weeks from being 66 years old so damn right an 18-20 year old is a kid. I can still remember being 19 and most of them have a lot to learn even if they are big time athletes.

I bet you they even don't want people to refer to them as kid's. Just because an individual is younger than you are doesn't mean they are still a kid.

Maybe we wouldn't have some of the issues with this age group or individuals in their early 20's if we didn't still refer to them as kids and require them to grow up to make adult decisions. Not so much pointing to the college athlete but more to others their age who have issues and make bad choices.

I think this is something that has evolved over time in our society, not holding young adults accountable and labeling them still as kids. Just my opinion.

They are young men just as college women in sports are women but a lot of people call them girls which I do not do. But at the same time (and I dont know how old you are) but it is very easy for someone my age to call them a kid which is not as bad as saying 'boy' or ' 'girl'.

I get that. Yea, better a kid than boy or girl.

Oh, I'm the same age as Mr. Jon Miller, I believe.

In the final analysis I've come to believe that we see the world, for the most part, as we are. If something in life is lacking, we can fill that with a fun hawkeye win. If someone's overall life is fine, then there isn't much that is going to upset someone all that much

And or look at it this way...

One finds great joy in seeing the favorite team win, and make plays. we feel high.

We go back to the drug the next week, its a 10-17 game. No buzz this time. It sucks We're upset because we wanted the thrill, the high, the buzz.

We must find out WHY!? This will not stand ! This can not keep happening ! I need my buzz! I need my thrill! I don't want to have another saturday without my high!

Do some people need to get a freaking life ? Ya.

Sometimes I'm one of those.

Sometimes I get over attached and a bad loss really makes me stop and look at WTF I'm doing/posting/thinking.

Second, the idea that people who are expressing dissatisfaction are tying their "self-worth" to a bunch of kids playing a game represents multiple logical fallacies. Its a classic straw man. It knocks down a (faulty) premise created by the individual making the argument.

Regarding the quoted portion, why would someone get so irrationally angry over a form of entertainment that they have no control over? For many fans I think it is a reflection of self-worth. I feel this myself, even with something as stupid as having a feeling of inferiority if the B1G has a bad bowl season (I mentally explain to myself how stupid this is, but the feeling can still persist).

But I also agree with you that there are others who have different reasons underlying their frustration/anger. Reasons relating to the wonderful irrationality of fandom, and the important role that Hawkeye sports can play in one's social life (connecting to friends, family, etc.).

For me personally, the Hawkeyes are entertainment. When things are going well, I spend time watching, reading about, and discussing the team online, all of which adds to the entertainment value. When I find the Hawkeyes having a substantial negative effect on my mood, I back away. I stop paying so much attention, I definitely stay away from the message boards. Doing these things would not add to the entertainment value, but rather detract from it.

For those that take a different tack, specifically venting on message boards, I would love to see you articulate your reasons. I am sure some of them involve compelling stories of the importance of Hawkeye sports not just as entertainment, but as a thread holding together social fabric across Iowa and beyond.

Is it Festivus already? I get my holiday's mixed up.

I've got a lot of problems with you people!

If your old enough to have a gun in your hand and go to war you're not a 'kid' to me. When I was that age I hated being treated/called a kid. I think society/parents have been perpetuating the behavior of younger folks to be immature and not take responsibility for themselves so what incentive is there for those 'kids' to 'grow up' Why on earth should a 26 year old be on their parents insurance? That blows my mind and shouldn't be the case. How many 18-24 yr olds that are perfectly capable of being on their own still live with mommy and daddy? They do it because of wanting to maintain their 'standard of living' They want free cell phone/internet/tv/etc. They have a nicer place to live and all that rather then whatever they'd get being on their own.
LaVar Ball is a pretty good example of an overbearing parent in the sports world... He seems to think Steve Alford should bear more blame for what happened to his kid in China then his kid.... Such is life nothing is my fault no matter how old you are it don't seem like. Blame is tossed around like STDs nowadays.

I'll tell you right now if you're 19 - 22 y/o you're not a kid but you're far from a full adult. Most people don't start getting their shit together until their mid 20s. All your examples are coddling by the parents. That's on the PARENTS not the age group of humans you're trying to define, there IS a difference.

The claim that young adults in this day and age are not being held accountable is one of societies greatest myths. You may want to recall some of your own issues and bad choices before you make this faulty assumption about young people. What evidence would you like to present to defend your position? I mean no offense to you personally. I just challenge your position on young people.
