Stanley NFL Draft Stock

Just saw this on CBS Sports and thought I'd share.

Day 2 with something to prove

Nathan Stanley, Iowa
Stanley, a senior, has improved his completion percentage, passing yards and yards per attempt from his sophomore to junior campaigns. He has a plus arm and moves well in the pocket but had a tendency to stare down targets and that can lead to poor decisions and, ultimately, turnovers. Has all the tools to be a special player but the question is whether he can put it all together in the coming months.

Stanley has an NFL arm but he will have to stop overthrowing his receivers by 10 yards to get serious NFL consideration.

I think he can make the long throws with better accuracy than we have seen previously. He just needs to get more of a gunslinger attitude. We may see that during his final year at Iowa as he matures and gains more confidence. I think K. O’Keefe will open him up in 2019.

Nate is the anti - Baker Mayfield: no visible confidence, no cockiness, no accuracy, no pocket presence, no swagger, no command.

The opposite of those make for a good NFL QB these days.

Patriots...Most will depend upon if he has a viable running game, receivers who can get open, and a defensive line which, when dominant, makes for the highest of QB seasons in college and the NFL.

Intangible, will Kirk & Son be able to coach him to the highest of levels, or perhaps more accurate would be to say, will they not cause him to stumble with their "overcoaching" and punt first keep it close default setting. Let the pony run, go for it.

Stanley lacks the intangibles....I hope he makes me eat those words but idk.....
I thought he was "it" two years ago against ISU. On the road, second start, he looked like he was the man, since then he has shown the ability to choke. I hope he changes it around again.

He had one bad over throw last season. While it was a glaring overthrow, there were plenty of long throws that he put right on the money. I feel like he just needs more accuracy on intermediate crossing routes, quit throwing behind and too far in front of his receivers. I agree with most that he seems to be missing that "it" factor. I hope I eat those words this year

Hey Ree, I corrected that for you...you had one bad overthrow...it was closer to 100. Ok, maybe not a 100, but I can count 9-10 just to Noah Fant. Nate Stanley is the key to everything. The team around him will be good enough to get to the B10 Championship in my opinion...it's whether Nate's play at critical times is up to the standard. I've said it many times, CJ Beathard made all the plays at critical times in the 2015 season...Nate has to be the man at crunch time. It's not just throws either...think PITT in 2015...if Beathard doesn't make a short throw on the money and then the 5-7 yard run in the closing seconds...we never get a shot at a 57 yard field goal. It's that type of stuff too.

Another example...against MSU in the bowl game...we have the ball 4th and one at their 12, Stanley looks for a slant, it's covered, and he runs for a first down...shocking everyone. That's a winning play...we score a touchdown on the next play.

He has to make those plays.

He will be fine.
The Manning camp should have helped him. Being a SR should help him. Having more and more experienced targets should help him.
Provided he gets a running game to back him up, he will have everything he needs.

i'm not convinced of a high side up-potential for accuracy at the QB position.
that seems to be something that is developed over years and years while maturing

a lot of practice and muscle memory/vision goes into accuracy. a lot.
the question then is, how much practice did Nate do in the off season?

the answer, I think, is that Nate doesn't have to improve a lot for Iowa to have a good season.

however, to have a NFL starting career I think he would have to improve substantially.

Tis the time to blossom. And yes he's gotta let it loose. He's proven he can be careful enough. Loose and free, then we'll see what Stanley's really got. I'm betting on the upside.

Stanley has won us some games and lost us some games and so has every QB college or pro. I still believe it has more to do with KF because it seems the hot hand we see the first year seems to always regress or not improve much in then second. Also if we recruited better and faster talent at WR maybe just maybe those over throws would be nice highlight reels.

He tends to get skeerd in the pocket.

Last year inept running game, punting, wide receivers caused Stanley to look worse than he might have been.

The NFL puts a premium on accuracy.

Stanley will get his shot in the NFL absent a Vandenbergish collapse his senior year. He's a Day 2 prospect who could play himself into round 1 if he can raise his level and be more consistent. Like Beathard, he has the advantage of playing in an NFL offense, and is not going to face as steep a learning curve as a guy who may put up bigger numbers in college.
