Stanley Is A Machine

Truer words have never been spoken. I remember Roby kicking into a strong wind at Kinnick...and the return guy was still standing 40 yards from the line of scrimmage. Roby hits this punt that is low and a frozen rope spiral...it got over the return guys head so fast and bounded about 65 yards...flip of field...first and 10 opponent at their 15 yard line.

If you don't think he was a main contributor of what that defense was able to accomplish in '81...you are sorely mistaken.
Now imagine what last year’s defense could have done with a punter. Frankly we should have been going for it nearly every fourth down.

This thread has "epic" potential.

Oh, I miss watching Reggie Roby! He was spectacular. The height he would get on his kicks! He'd kick 49 yarders consistently with no chance for the other team to return. Flippin fields.

Notice that Stanley averaged only .8 yards less and only had three punts all season. Even if he wasn’t substantially better he should have gotten the ball in the shotgun every fourth down and optioned into either a pass or rugby punt. I imagine if we ran double tight with Wadley in the backfield we’d convert a fair amount of the time.
Was there anyone with equal or more attempts with a lower avg? I mean you are digging 2 and 3 deep of some pretty bad teams to find one who had equal amounts of chances to up the avg.

Stanley got like a couple all-conference selections as a punter for his team in his HS years. They guy had like a 47 or 48 yrd average in HS. The guy can punt.

Great article. He was the only kid in his neighborhood with no other kids to play with, so at age 6 or 7 he started kicking footballs and soccer balls over houses. The differences in his kicking mechanics are sure interesting. 2 step as opposed to a 3 step kicker.

I also remember how high he would put the ball up before dropping it and how high his leg would go up before contact. Very different.

I know people have been saying for years that KF has tried to have players he can program and control, but this is a LOT farther than I thought he'd go!
He doesn't have to worry about any of these new recruits going on Twitter.
