Stanley is #2?

Forget the redshirt, college football is a different game than in 1984, players won't playing time ASAP, Iowa can't be worried about who'll be the QB in 3 years. The objective is to have the very best players available now. So if the very conservative coaching staff feels Stanley is the best option at number 2 as a freshman...I buy that, go for it.
He can be 'available' without burning his RS on garbage time. You don't have to 'declare' you're red-shirting prior to the season starting....

I get what you are saying, but aren't you the same guy who rips other posters when they "question" coaching decisions? If the coaches "battled" with the decision, yet still decided to pull his shirt in the very first game, shouldn't that tell you they are "confident" in said decision? They could have put this decision off for weeks if they wanted to, but they didn't, they made a decision, and they are moving forward with it. I suggest you do the same, or I might start cutting and pasting some of your replies to posters when they feel they have enough information on practice and players to question them.
I support their decision, even if I don't like it. Bring on Iowa St.!!!

I appreciate that even though you often back the coaches, you look at each situation individually and draw your conclusion. If by the end of the season Stanley has only played those 5 snaps, then I, and probably most who are defending the move, will say it was not worth it. Likewise, I am sure if Stanley can find his way into 4 or 5 games and have the opportunity to attempt double-digit passes, you will probably reconsider as well. I think the latter will happen, and I think "breaking the seal" in the first game will facilitate this. However, history would argue otherwise. Time will tell.

This is an interesting thread to revisit in light of the recent news that Stanley is a highly regarded, soon to be draft-eligible prospect. Also interesting to think about as we discuss potential redshirts for this year's freshmen class.

What’s kinda secondary in this discussion but amazing, is the fact that 3 Iowa QBs in a row have the chance of being on NFL 2 deep rosters with ruddock, CJB and Stanley

I am happy for Rudock but I am still amazed he ended up as the 2nd string QB on the Lions. Of course now it sounds like he is going to be demoted to 3rd string this year because Matt Cassel is probably going to be the backup QB job for the Lions this year.

If Stanley would've redshirted, he would have been back with the team and all of its weapons this year. Instead, he burned his redshirt to go 5-9 passing.

Having said that, I've been a huge fan of Petras since I saw his film when he committed and am excited to see him.
