Spring Themes

Iowa’s spring football sessions are in the books…here are a few questions that may have been answered and some that have come about.

QUARTERBACK: Greg Davis and Kirk Ferentz have both said that Jake Rudock is the #1 guy. But both have said they are going to get CJ Beathard some snaps in each game next year, or a series. Does that make things shape up like Jake Christensen v Ricky Stanzi from 2008?

Christensen entered spring as the clear #1, having started the entire 2007 season…the same as Rudock. But in the spring of 2008, Stanzi, who was younger than Christensen, began to grow and make strides. He showed better touch and when spring was over, whispers began to emerge that he was Ken O’Keefe’s choice. Then came the fall and each quarterback started a game and both looked solid. Then came the Pittsburgh game and Christensen struggled in the first half and was outplayed by Stanzi. Ferentz went with Jake C in the second half, calling it a ‘gut feeling’, as Jake C had led Iowa to a win the previous week against Iowa State. This gut feeling didn’t work out and Iowa lost 21-20. The following week, Ricky Stanzi started the game and never relinquished his hold on the job. Christensen would transfer to Eastern Illinois the following year.

Back to the present…Rudock started an entire season for Iowa and helped lead the Hawkeyes to an 8-5 record and an Outback Bowl bid. Pretty heady stuff for a sophomore. But Beathard…oh the tantalizing arm he possesses…and he runs better than Rudock, too.

Marc Morehouse of The Gazette calls it a ‘Quarterback Something’ and I agree…Who knows if this will be the ‘go with the hot hand’ type of thing, but if they allow Beathard a series early in each game, they are opening up Pandora’s box for a full blown quarterback competition. Beathard is no shrinking violet, either. He’ll go in and he’ll look for the opportunities. That said, he’ll need to not try to hit the home run on every throw. The coaches know he has that in his tool box. Hitting the check down and ‘putting some money in the bank’ as KOK used to say will be just as important for CJB.

Iowa has two capable quarterbacks…two Big Ten capable quarterbacks. Letting CJB know, at this juncture on the calendar, that he is going to play in games next year might also ensure that Iowa has two Big Ten capable quarterbacks on the roster in September, too.

WIDE RECEIVER: I wrote during the offseason that receiver could turn out to be a strength for Iowa this year and that there might be as much talent at this position on the roster than we have seen in the Ferentz era…unproven talent, but talent just the same.

Derrick Willies was the breakout star of the spring and had big days at both public practices. He looks the part, he has the speed and now must work on consistency, which can be the bane of most young players.

With Willies, KMM, Tevaun Smith and Jacob Hillyer, Iowa has an impressive looking core that looks more like a Michigan lineup than an Iowa lineup. Add in the upside of Demond Powell and the fact that the coaches love Matt VandeBerg and you’re talking about a number of quality targets…not to mention the capable hands Iowa has in its tight end ranks.

All in all, there may be more quality targets for Iowa quarterbacks to throw to since…since…well, a long time.

LINEBACKER: Iowa has enormous shoes to fill here, but Quinton Alston is going to be a very good player. Reggie Spearman and Travis Perry have more ‘proving’ to do on the field, but we all remember Spearman from last year when he was used in pass rush situations. Josey Jewell has been making plays, according to Phil Parker:

Jewell has really showed up out there, just as a football player. We look at it and say, ‘who is the guy going out and making plays?’ You just watch the film and you just watch the guys running around on tape and you see him tracking guys down. Somewhere, he’s going to have to fit in our system because when you give that much effort and you attack the football the way he does and make plays the way he’s done, he’s going to probably show up.’

West Branch walk on Bo Bower is also getting his nose in there and is getting a chance to work his way into the mix.

This position, along with the secondary, is pretty open right now and will likely work itself out in August and September.

Jake played great overall last year and made mostly the correct mental checks. But from past history it should be a no brainer for this coaching staff to start getting the # 2 game time and more prepared to play.

Jake was hurt and had to leave two games last year and we saw that with Stanzi getting hurt. I dont see where CJB getting some playing time is going to butthurt other players on this team.

I should add the main deal is to win and entertain the fans so if CJB can add some buzz a couple times a game and lead a scoring drive then great.

Christiansen outplayed Christiansen? I don't think that was even possible. He was terrible in that game.

Let's hope, if there does end up being a controversy, it's because Beathard is playing so well you can't keep him off the field, and not because J. Rudock is struggling. During the time Stanzi and Christiansen were battling for the starting spot it seemed like it was a matter of which guy would do the least amount of damage to the team. Kind of a risk assessment if you will... Fortunately for Iowa football, once Stanzi took over the position he was able to grow into a damn good QB. However, I'm still hopeful in this case it's a matter of which guy helps the offense excel the most.

As long as we don't turn into Little Brother regarding QB controversies, I don't have an issue giving both of them some reps early in the season and see where things are. But the one thing I've always appreciated about Iowa, and Ferentz in general, is that once the QB position is locked down in the fall, then it's full steam ahead with that guy. It's so much better than the circus they have over in Ames every year.

QB controversies are great for message boards like this one. The reality is that they completely suck when it comes to the morale of the team.

This^. If Beathard beats out Ruddock due to on the field performance, then that's a good thing. But like another poster said, the last thing we want is to have anything that resembles the QB carousel that they have over in Lames.

won't happen - fortunately iowa has a coach with a clue as how to coach. woads was more of a messageboard fan the way he changed QBs all of the time. interesting how that played out and how many people wish that Ferentz would put in the 'better guys who are on the bench'....

What I remember about the Christensen/Stanzi controversy was that nearly every person but Ferentz could readily see that Stanzi was the way to go. Not sure we've seen enough of Beathard to make a judgement yet, but I hope Kirk is keeping an open mind (something I don't think can be said about the 2012 season).

That said, I am finding myself to be unreasonably optimistic about our chances this year. Lots of individual strengths and an easy schedule add to that feeling.

looks like ferentz made a good decision on the timing of putting stanzi in.

The only issue I have with Rudock is arm strength. On alot of throws last year when he had a wide open receiver down field for an easy TD he under threw him. Also on a couple of his picks down field the ball was under thrown. I do think he is more accurate on smaller and intermediate throws then Beathard is.

i have no idea here - just guessing - but i know for a large part of the season he had a 'bad wheel' or two. a lot of armstrength is generated by the core and legs...

Beathard needs to get a little better at his reads and make and make those high percentage throws. Than we can talk quarterback controversy. Until than it is Rudock's proven talent vs. Beathard's potential talent.

He had trouble with the long ball before he got hurt. I think Jon said he thought it was a timing issue. But Im not convinced. I want to see him making the throw

I agree that Jake is better on short passes, with more touch, but CJ clearly has the stronger wing, and quicker release. He nails receivers right in the numbers on intermediate- long passes and it almost looks like he might injure them with his velocity. As Greg Davis says....''CJ can really spin it''...and watching on Saturday, that was so true when throwing into the wind...CJ's ball just cuts threw the wind...while Jakes passes tend to get turned sideways and wobble. Competition is good for everyone...let'em fight for it, KF.

I always wondered if Ferentz had just went with Rick from the jump and stuck with him thing may have been better sooner that year.

Basically get everyone settled in and live with the good and bad, maybe the close losses at Pitt & MSU and the Northwestern home loss could have turned out differently.

Yes, but to be fair I was at the WDM practice and he still had a couple wide open receivers down the field that he underthrew. I don't think he has any leg issues right now...

I'm a big Rudock supporter, but his biggest deficiency is certainly his ability to throw the ball down the field. It's the one area Beathard clearly has an edge, and there really isn't anything Rudock can do about it except focus on improving other aspects of his game. He's just as accurate as Beathard on the short and intermediate throws. I'd say Rudock is the better decision maker, and he's better at going through his reads. I think those things are what is keeping him in front of Beathard right now, but those are also things that Beathard can and appears to be improving on. It will be interesting to see how much he improves in those areas because like I said I don't think Rudock is going to make any drastic improvements on his deep ball. It just doesn't appear like he has the arm strength. If Beathard can make strides in those other areas I could definitely see him taking over the starting job.

And the exact opposite was true at Valley Stadium. It's very important to remember that we're only getting a snapshot when we go to an open practice or spring game. Rudock looked much better than Beathard in games last fall, although it's always been obvious that Beathard has a big arm.
