Spring Themes

QB controversies are great for message boards like this one. The reality is that they completely suck when it comes to the morale of the team.

If players clearly feel another guy can help them more though but the coach isn't putting him in, that can also hurt team morale.

And since none of us are football players, there's no real evidence that that's happening.

I think that either KF is pandering to CJ to keep him around or he is serious when he says that CJ is going to compete for the job on the field next fall. If CJ had not narrowed the gap with Jake, I doubt that KF would even lend credence to the notion of CJ playing at all....even KF cannot deny what his eyes tell him.. in our group at the spring game, we all came in leaning to Jake, but we all came out feeling that CJ has more star potential.

More than likely KF is saying what they are actually thinking, rather than pandering. If he is pandering, I would have to say it would be the first time I can think of that he would be pandering.

Jon, if CJB learns how to make weekly deposits into the bank account, then I like him better than Jake. With Jake there is no threat of the consistant long ball and that makes Iowa play on only 2 of 3 levels (short / mid-range / deep) on offense and allows lbs to maybe not have to take play "behind them" and they're closer to the los on run plays.

The thing about potential is that it is just that, potential until it has been consistently proven - starting in practice. If football was just about being the most athletic then the two deeps would look different all the way around.

I will venture to guess that there are two things that separates Jake and CJ in the coaches' minds: reads and consistency.

Most people have thought this for some time now. It's a matter of being more consistent. The guy completed 33% of his passes last year. He's got talent and a very high ceiling, but that don't feed the bulldog. He's got to produce consistent results, which he's not done yet.

I really like and respect Jake and what he has done. I am intrigued by what CJ has the potential to offer. These two guys have different intangibles and skill sets.

Do not take this as negative rebuttal but I am not certain throwing out his completion rate is a fair piece of data at this point. He was thrown into three games not being the starter and into high pressure game situations.

I believe many fans talked about Canzeri's low yards per carry the year before until he played meaningful downs and produced. Canzeri should be a lesson on small sample size and ad hoc appearances both good and bad.

Ball State was above avg last year, almost on a par with Northern Ill. so if the hawks can get a good lead in that game so CJB can get some time that would be great.

I am hoping the hawks get good leads against UNI and ISU so CJB can get some series either throughout the game or at least the 4th qtr.

This way by game three the staff will know if he has taken a big step from last year where he was more of a slinger.

There is something to be said for sample size, I agree. But if he doesn't look considerably better in practices, it wouldn't be hard to label him as "not ready".
