....now that you've seen what Vandy and the boyz can do in a shotgun-quasi-two-minute-drill type of offense, are you sticking to your flawed premise we were "correct" in sitting on the ball at the end of regulation in Ames?

Vandenberg never got in a rhythm in that game.

Rather, if you're going to play the "what if" game ... it would have been cool to see the coaches put Vandy and Co into the hurry-up sometime in the ISU game. Had we gotten Vandy in a rhythm PRIOR to the that final drive ... then sure, why not go for it. Of course, then they'd have to open up the drive with a PASSING play rather than a running play. And, conventional wisdom really should apply as well ... if the first completion doesn't break you past the 30 ... then just sit on the ball ... you don't want to give up an easy FG.

Vandy wasn't in any sort of rhythm in the Pittsburg game either.....until he was allowed to be.

He got into a rhythm under center and out of the huddle. The first touchdown drive did NOT come out of the no huddle, or shotgun. We drove 60 yards with 3 pass plays (one was play action) and a Bullock run, and then the JVB sneak. We huddled up after ever play, and JVB didn't take one snap out of the shotgun. We ran our normal offense on that drive.....

Stop this, this doesn't help Seth's cause at all.

Coaching involves many decisions that are made by the proverbial gut. Coach Ferentz would maybe do things differently, but probably not. In Kirk we trust.

In Kirk we trust, except when it comes to clock management, and being overly conservative.

LOL! Absolutely, Ferentz is a great coach ... a great teacher ... and likely a tremendous colleague to his fellow coaches ... but boy does he suck when it comes to clock management!

One of Iowa's greatest moments in football history came as a result of poor clock management, The Catch.

Absolutely.

2nd and 13, at your own 18 yard line, with about a minute to go, on the road.

I'd sit on it too. I would have sat on it with Stanzi too. I think JVB is going to be better than Stanzi. Still wouldn't try the 1 minute drill on the road inside your own 20. Nope.

I forgot that they changed the rules of football for that drive. Thought we got the ball on the 21, 1st and 10, 1:17. My bad.

Ferentz is one of the best coaches in the country but I think it's fair to say that he has some weaknesses and it does seem that he has struggled when it comes to managing the clock. I do think the overly conservative mantra gets over played a little too much though.

Wrong. The Pittsburgh game was a total team breakdown, from penalties to missed tackles, missed coverages, turnovers, etc.

And the ISU game?! ANYthing Vandy threw to the right side of the field (HIS right side) was overthrown by five feet, in the ground or otherwise un-catchable.

We dropped the KO, so started at the 20. 5-yard penalty puts us at the 15. You REALLY think we should be throwing in that situation? Especially when protection wasn't the greatest?

ISUs D is significantly better than Pitt's D. End of story.

We dropped the KO, then incurred a penalty, so we started at our 15. Our protection that day sucked. If we attempt to pass and have 2 or 3 incompletions, we stop the clock. We punt on 4th down. Do you even remember what our kick and punt coverage LOOKed like that day? Our how awful some of JVBs throws were?

I'm all for airing it out on the first play of the drive, or a good play-action, but throw it downfield. Short and medium passes can get picked off via tip, etc., not to mention a poor throw. A downfield INT isn't "good", but it's better than a 10-15 yard pass from our own 20 that gets picked off.

No, we ran up the gut on the first play. Then had the penalty.

For those who think we made the correct call, please assign probability to the following outcomes if we had attempted to run a legitimate two minute drill to end the game:

1) We move the ball 45 or more yards and kick the winning FG/scores TD.
2) We turn the ball over with enough time and/or in the right field position for ISU to kick the winning FG/score TD.
3) We fail to gain a single first down, punt the ball, and ISU drives and converts winning FG/TD. Also include here any probability that Iowa gains a first down but still ends up punting and ISU scores the winning FG/TD if you think there is some probability of this happening.
4) We attempt to drive the ball, but ultimately the game goes to OT anyway.**

** This would include lots of possibilities. Iowa missed the FG after good drive. Turnover after a moderate Iowa drive that doesn't give ISU a chance to drive and score. An Iowa drive that moves the ball but ultimately peters out. Iowa punts immediately or turns it over but ISU misses their FG. Iowa drives for a while, but then punts and pins ISU deep. Lots of stuff here. And in fact, this should equal 1 minus your above probabilities.
