so not recruiting an actual point guard this year?

Plenty of people here thought we'd be good this year, people were so quick to throw Mike and Woody under the bus like losing them wasn't going to hurt

Plenty of people were cautiously optimistic but also knew there was a slew of new players coming into the program. I don't think anyone expected them to be a finished product in November. I get that you want put a nail in em and wrap up the season with absolutes before it's even a 1/4th over but let's just watch it play out. It's going to be a roller coaster but I expect this team to get some upsets along the way too.

I don't think anyone thought we'd be 3-4 right now with the #139 ranked defense according to KenPom

Mike G was a true PG, and he was lot better than most around here give him credit.

Bohannon dished out 7 assists and had 23 points last night with 1 TO. No matter if you view him as a PG or not, those are elite PG numbers (for one game at least). I'm starting to get the sneaky suspicion that Bohannon is gonna be a pretty darn good PG.

Bohannon had an incredible shooting night last night and some of those assists were a product of that since he was drawing attention. But watch him on the defensive side, he cannot keep up with opposing point guards. Gesell was a true point guard, I don't see a point guard in Bohannon.

by anyone do you mean everyone? Cause I think most people thought this team would struggle early and if they didn't they certainly weren't being realistic considering what we lost.

Defense doesn't make one a PG or not. Is Jok not a SG/wing because he couldn't keep an offensive lineman in front of him?

Jordan is gonna be the guy getting the ball up the court, he is a good passer, he will force defenders to come out and defend him, and this will create some spacing this offense desperately needs. Look at last night how much room Pemsl had to work with underneath. Getting shooters on the floor from Jordan to Jok to Moss to even Ellingson will free up space down low.

Sure he lacking on the defensive end right now, but I don't get how that means he isn't somehow a PG?

I thought we would struggle this year but the defense has been a shock. I noticed it in the first game they played that they were not defending anyone to stop the dribble penetration and leaving shooters wide open.

He doesn't have quickness to defend the opposing point guard. Everything you say about him offensively plays well as a shooting guard, we need the point to be able to penetrate.

Bohannon is our best choice at PG...which means, well, a long season. That said, he isn't afraid to shot.

How many Iowa players in recent years were able to "take their man off the dribble" and break down the defense on a consistent basis? It is, and most often is, what is lacking in this program. Jok is hanging his head because he is unable to do this as well...and has been told that it is what is lacking in his game for future NBA time.

Santa...send Iowa an elite...semi-elite...partially-elite, or a bit above average true PG...pretty please!

I like Pemsl...I am stunned too...what, an Iowa post player with some post moves!!!!!!

Mike was a true PG and took people off the dribble all the time. He struggled to finish at the rim at times and I wish he would have developed a floater instead of getting blocked at the rim so much. He had a great mid range pull up game and was really good at driving and kicking to open teammates plus was an elite defender

I'll put the over under on how many times Mike drove the line and kicked to an open teammate in hid entire career at 10. I would guess that 99% of his career assists went to jump shooters coming off screens or on fast breaks.

Mike G couldn't get to the rim if his life depended on it. Mike G rarely drove and dished the ball. That isn't all Mike's fault, and it won't be Bohannon's fault. Fran has is PG join the flow of the offense, we don't have a system where the PG stands at the top of the key and runs set plays. He gets the ball down the court, passes, and then gets into the motion offense.

Jordan, IMHO has fed the post better in his first 7 games than Mike did his entire career - and he's a threat to score...and I was a HUGE MG fan.

Both Gesell and Clemmons had the quickness to dribble penetrate but neither of them could shoot well enough from the outside to draw the defense out.

But yeah, Bohannon is probably our best choice for right now. For now we are going to have to hope we can simply outscore the opposing team in shoot outs.

I'd bet Mike has more TO on his drives and attempted dishes than he did assists. He was horrible at driving and hitting an open man.

This coming from a guy who told everyone on this board that Mike would be good at this as a Jr and Sr., because he would learn to finish at the rim.....welp I was wrong, he never improved at this and I literally cringed every time he took it to the basket as it was gonna end in a blocked shot or turnover.

The reason why Gesell couldn't get to the rim was because his perimeter shooting sucked.

ND is a top 25 caliber team and it was our 1st road test of the season. We were without our second best player and our best player was horrible (hopefully because he was hurt). The supporting cast played well enough to win most remaining games once jok and cook get healthy. That is a good sign.

Also one guy guarding JB tight 5 foot behind the line and Jok getting doubled 5 foot behind the line is really going to make Pemsl and Cook look good.

But don't say everyone predicted we would struggle like this early when that isn't true. Even you didn't predict it

If he predicted wins against ISU and UNI, he's only one game off right now. He probably didn't predict Cook and Jok both being hurt either. Didn't Cook play with a broken finger against Memphis? Do we sneak out a win if he's healthy? Probably not but who knows.

I don't think we win either of those games
