Smith Calls Out Stanley In Postgame

Wait a second. We lost to Central Mich early in the season before both Off Tackles got hurt against Penn St which was the collapse part of the season.

After the hawks lost to CMU they beat Minny at home and a good Sparty team on the road to start the Big 10 at 2-0. Iowa was the better team than CMU but they for some reason were not pumped up enough or the coaches underplayed their coaching. Not sure.

Actually that MSU team wasn't very good at all. They won their bowl game to finish 7-6.

They were 3-5 in the B1G that year and were damn lucky they weren't 1-7. That needed a huge comeback against Indiana and beat Wisconsin in OT. I was at that Wisconsin game.

Points given up by Michigan and their elite defense so far:
21 MTSU
21 Army
35 Wis
0 Rut
3 Iowa
25 Lovie

Did they just try harder against the Hawks? Or maybe MTSU, Army, & Illannoy have better players on offense?

The problem isn't the losses- it's that the primary cause of the losses is going to be the OC until he becomes the HC, and that's not a fun thought.
Pretty much tells the story...slightly better than Rutgers. Good job Brian.

I had a chance to go to the Iowa game in East Lansing but had a conflict. That was the game where Mike Meyer needed to kick something like a 43 yard fg to force a second overtime, which he did. He then kicked another fg in OT #2 and Greg Castlllo sealed the game with a pick that Carl Davis tipped at the line of scrimmage.

That would sadly be Iowa's last victory of the season. They would play Peen State the next week in a fateful game that they would lose-and lose both starting offensive tackles.

That Penn State QB deserves some credit for standing in there and making some plays. He was getting pummeled, and I posted early in the game that he was going to gift the ball to us in a critical spot.

He never did.
Have to agree. That kid impressed me. I thought the way we got hits on him early would take it's toll. Remember he basically did all his damage in less then 3 quarters. We destroyed them the first 1st Q they did less then nothing. So like the Rutgers punter (PSUs punter got the award this wk) a tip of the cap to him he earned it.

Ok, this is the first thread I've read since last night. A whole lot of stupid going on. Questioning our offensive scheme, Stanley being called out...etc.

Stanley isn't the issue. When your interior line play is getting blown up on almost every play...I'm going out on a limb and saying that fact is the major issue. Our left guard got beat all night last night and he was barely slowing anyone down in the passing game. It was terrible...and I'm talking 2012 bad. It wasn't just that though...they aren't in sync with the line calls...and that may be on Linderbaum. There were plays where a guy pulls and the line doesn't fill fold down to pick up the DT. It was crazy...this is on the OL coach and OC.

I also think Smith is calling out BF more than Stanley...there are primary and secondary receivers on every route...Smith thinks he should be the guy. Hard to argue with him.

For those not paying attention our route trees are more complex than they have ever been. We have guys open all the time, more so than any year I can remember. First, they have to catch the ball (Tracy), second, the QB needs a stable pocket.

Lastly, people saying this team will pack it in and go downhill are full of shit. That may be the dumbest comment I've seen on this board. You can criticize KF all you want...but his players play for him. The defense will continue to get better, and hopefully, they can get better on the interior of the O-line...but his players won't quit. The players we recruit have no quit in them...that's a prerequisite for being at Iowa...and it's conditioned from the moment they get here. These guys play for eachother...they won't quit on their brothers. They want to win.

Lastly, we just played two of the three best defenses we will play all year. It gets easier from here, outside of Wisconsin. To me, it's OL play period as to why we lost these two games.
'stable pocket' hell Stanley would settle for just being able to set his back foot before having to shuffle around. But yeah I agree we had breakdowns all over on O and EVERYTHING starts and ends with the Oline. Nothing can or will get better if that doesn't. It's that simple to me.

Smith I agree was calling out BF. He had like 7 or 8 catches and easily should have had more targets. To me they just need to use their talent better. Smith should get 3-5 of those type of jump balls a game. Be it in the redzone or like that one 35 plus yards out. If he's one on one it's not a fair fight he's got the advantage.

Guys like ISM, Tracy and Ragaini shouldn't be having those same jump balls thrown their way. They are wasted plays. I like ISM on strait shot plays down the field too leading him to run under it like how guys like Desean Jackson are used. But don't go asking them to muscle up a DB that's NOT in our favor. The other two should be used on the shorter crossing routes over the middle/screens stuff like that. Identifying the best way to use your talent is #1 job for OCs and what the heck was he doing all off season spring and summer camp?

I went the the Badger/MSU in Madison with a cousin and his buddies who are Wisconsin fans. I remember they were on a good roll, had won 3 or 4 in a row beating up on teams. Hadn't lost in Madison in like 3/4 years. MSU was about .500 overall. Everyone was very confident.

Wisconsin was ahead pretty much the entire game, MSU couldn't do much on offense all day and finally put together a long TD drive and tied the game 10-10 with 1 minute left and then won the game in OT 16-13. It took everything in me to to laugh my ass off the rest of the day. Wisconsin ended up limping to a 3rd place finish in their division but got to go to Indy and destroyed Nebraska there.

I agree with you to a point. Those backups were at least given time to develop behind those guys for a couple of years, so they were ready when their names were called.

How many more years do some of our upper classmen (won't name names) on the line need so they're game ready. Not throwing two under the bus because they've been as consistent as most our line but if being a 5th year SR isn't enough I'm not sure how much more time you can give them.

If this were the NFL the locker room it would definitely be divided now. The Vikings are the NFL version of Iowa and look at all the thinly veiled shots taken at Cousins. KF will squash this, but man there has to be a lot of frustration in that locker room.

If you are on defense right now you are looking at the offense sideways. In order to win everything is dependent on you I could see how that could cause some tension.

Best way to reunite the team in that situation could be to take a shot a coordinator. Might put them all on the same page again.

Yeah Kirk struggles with players who are outspoken. This is the most outspoken I've heard him be. But Kirk has been very complementary of him since he got here. It will probably take more than this.

I'm sure its frustrating for him to be such a terrific athlete and play in an offense with such poor coaches.
Benching Stanley isn't even close to the answer. He has the experience. What Iowa needs is better offensive line play. Better offensive line coaching.

We would fare far better dropping out of the Power 5 realm. Does the Missouri Valley have football?

A large part of the problem has been mentioned previously: our coaching has a ball control over scoring mindset. In the old days, this WAS solid football. But the times, they are a-changin'! While it still has MANY MERITS, it is the dinosaur of college football now. Hell, only a handful of teams even list a fullback on their roster. Spread and Quick strike offenses; are the name of the game now.
Look at the stats: GENERALLY, teams in an Iowa game will get from 10-12 possessions a game Long, slow, clock consuming drives that end in zero points are the norm at Iowa. While it gives the defense good rest, when ineffective [no comment on how often that is the case] it does put all the pressure on them to pitch a near shutout. How many 20+ runs have we had this year, a couple and against St. Mary's College of the deaf and dumb? Too many runs for 1 yard and horizontal passes for 2 yards. Lets play NFL football and open it up... b4 its too late. We need an upgrade at coaching.
Overall, I have mostly been a fan of the capt. but I believe this should be his last year. We need a fresh start.

Dude you're headed for an ass beat when Purdue wins this. That's a pathetic bunch of coaches in Hawkeye gear.
