Slate article on situation

Yeah, doesn't even need to be said. If the OC was anyone but Brian Ferentz they would have been fired by now.

Well written. He covers a lot of the angles on it all... I mean technically when the subject of Brian comes up in regards to the media asking Kirk about his job status and all shouldn't Kirk just refer all those to Barta? I mean that's the other thing. How does that all work then? Would Kirk have to recommend his firing to Barta and then he OK it? Granted we all know how it really works but I'm just going by the stupid made up BS that they themselves put out there for us to choke on.

That's a surprisingly good write. It doesn't delve into "sportism" and avoids minutiae detail of stats and conjecture, and sticks to comprehensive metrics that any non-sportsballer would understand.

Interesting point about the loophole of Barta being Brain's 'boss'. I mean, we know it's meaningless.
But, as the article points out it adds layers to the quagmire.

I have always found it interesting that Belichick is supposedly Kirk's dear friend and supposedly has all the respect in the world for him but in over two decades at the helm has NEVER drafted a Kirk coached Hawkeye. Never. There's been isolated cases of Hawkeyes making the roster or practice squad as undrafted free agents (CJ Jones) but Bill has never spent a draft pick on a Ferentz player.

Ouch. That really hurts. I love Iowa football, and to watch it reduced to a joke is beyond belief. I just cannot even fathom why KF and GB have retained BF. Even a demotion to another position on the staff would seem both necessary and feasible. Yes, mid season, though it should have been done much earlier. The 10 wins, nearly 11, last season, suggests some hope for the future in terms of quality players and a significant improvement in recruiting in recent years. However, if KF/GB do not agree to bring on a new O coordinator and hand him the reins, some of the dire warnings noted in recent posts may become reality.

Kirk will not shame his son in public. The man will step down before admitting that being a mistake.
In fact I bet he retires this year and everybody on the staff will be looking for a job.

Every HS athlete / sports fan in America is now aware of our offensive impotence and dysfunctional coaching.
Thats got to really hurt future recruiting.

Kirk ain’t gonna fire Brian or demote him. It’d tear the family apart and Kirk knows he has more money than three generations will ever blow through, so he’ll just ride the plane crash out to its finish and let the program tank rather than have to 1) admit he made a huge mistake and 2) cause an unrepairable rift in the family.

If this continues the way it is trending, Brian will fall on the sword at the end of the year. He has too much respect, admiration, love for his father not to.

Really sad to see. I hope some of this national pressure will force Iowa athletic dept leadership, including KF, to reconsider their current course.

Nepotism is bad in organizations, including athletic departments, businesses, and government :)

Also, staying "too long at the fair"... being in power for decades, has significant downsides. Some things about "Fort Kinnick" have been really good, but in the past few years, that insular approach has not looked good under the bright light of public scrutiny. Interesting, given this is a public institution.

Perhaps national ridicule will embarrass someone, anyone, enough to do the right thing here for the good of the program.

We all are familiar with the situation. It’s just embarrassing that national media is picking up the fumble and running with it.

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

The article was less of a hatchet job than I thought it would be but he got most everything right. A little liberal with using the testimony of Whatley out of context but mostly fair. I noted on this board Kirk had an opportunity to hire a minority to be the OC which at least would have given the look of progress to the program, but he chose to promote his son. Ahead of coaches on the staff who have been here longer. Kirk is reaping what he sowed. He will not survive this with the good faith of fans or media. If this shit show continues this is just the beginning of the humiliations yet to come. Iowa's offense is being followed nationally like a team setting a record loss streak. People are tuning in like they are watching a car wreck. Now this shit is popping up. We will be losing recruits.
