Should Peyton Mansell Get At Least A Series A Game?

There are pros and cons for both sides of this. I can see the benefit of doing to help retain a QB and get them real experience for when they are ready.

One other con, though, is that it could potentially create a QB controversy if the other does well which many coaches want to try to avoid. Ferentz, for example, would want nothing to do with this idea. I realize that.

Except the aforementioned 2001 season, with BOTH McCann and Banks playing. 2008 was more a "We-haven't decided-yet" situation.

And...it's official: Kelly Bryant shutting it down at Clemson and transferring. Dabo and Co. better hope the 3rd guy is serviceable, and they better pray like crazy that Lawrence stays healthy.

I'm still waiting--albeit, not with bated breath--to see if Hurts does the same at Bama.

Hey Hawk Bob62, I know you have been watching the hawks as long as I have. hayden had a QB around 1996-8 who was the starter, got hurt, lost the job to Sherman, and then a couple of years later the sportswriter's accounts, and witnessed by fans in Kinnick, were this QB refused to go into a game late. This is really an extreme example of shutting it down.

It might have been Randy Reiners but I make have the name wrong.

Do you have memories of this?

I believe you are referring to Ryan Driscoll. IIRC, he had won the job at some point and was highly regarded out of Linn-Mar. He has stats from 1994-96 and he and Sherman were on the team at the same time. I believe Sherman ended up winning the job from him.

Scott Mullen was also in the mix. When I saw my first game at Camp Randall with my new bride and Badger fan in 1997, Mullen started that day. He may have been the one who refused to go into a game.

Sidenote: That was the day Iowa's contingent of team busses was pelted by eggs in Dickeyville on the way back to Iowa City. 151 went through town back then, up a long hill, and stopped at the intersection with 61 coming in from the north. Traffic could get backed up there for a while. Kuepers bar was a block away. It was full of drunk Badger fans. The calvary of busses had no chance.

That could be it.

Not a bad idea. However, Kirk doesn’t like controversy. If Mansell looks good and Stanley struggles then the fans will call for the backup. Doesn’t seem like Kirk likes it when fans put pressure on him. (Bo Bower)

Yes - he should get some playing time.
Ideally, when we are way ahead. But we seem to never get that far ahead & thus our backup never sees the field.
This is not ideal. Perhaps we give him a series when we are only 'comfortably ahead'?

So what if Stanley does not like it and decides to leave... If it doesnt light a fire in him, then wave good buy to him. Give Mansell a chance.
