Sell me why Iowa pulls it off in Madison

Many people like to use the 2017 debacle as a baseline for this game now, when in reality it was an aberration. We moved the ball fine on Wiscy last season, we just shot ourselves in the foot. Not to mention that only 2 defensive players from Wisconsin's 2017 2-deep remain on the roster (and neither was a starter).

Reality is, this game is always close. 2010, 2014, 2015, and 2016 were all 1-possession games. 2013 and 2018 were both skewed by garbage time TDs. Hell, even 2017 was a 1-possession game deep into the 3rd quarter. I'm not expecting a win, but I am expecting another nailbiter.
Wisconsin had about 5 starters out on defense last year and still beat us in Kinnick with a bum for a QB. Wisconsin's defense is good, our OC and offense is bad.

Well our best offense is gonna be our punter so if Iowa is going to pull this one out we will need points from the defense.

Jeez, I've been reading to many oldhawk posts!
Last time we played in Madison Josh Jackson had 2 pick 6's, and we still got trucked.

Sorry, but some things can't be sold, no matter how much lipstick you put on the pig. My prediction is we lose the next two and win the last two. Hope I am wrong and would love to see Iowa pull off wins against WI and/or MN. My philosophy is be pragmatic and don't get too upset when our offense can't "execute"

Bucky's too good of a team to lose three in a row.
Especially at home.
Especially with Iowa in town.

We'll lose this one, then win out for 9-3.

But, but, that IOWA DEFENSE!!!!;)

I don't know if they are to good of a team to lose 3 in a row. It's not likely but....
They don't usually lose to Illinois and I would say that is far more unlikely than losing 2 in a row to a very very good OSU and Iowa.

Iowa breaks out a 5-2 look for the first time. Shuts down wiscy's running game and limits johnathan taylor. The two linebackers who play most of the snaps are nieman and diji, who do their job, since this is the ultimate do your dang job game on defense. The 5-2 look frees up eppy and golston to rule the roost on the edge, and each gets a sack fumble recovered by the hawks. 1 as wiscy was marching, 1 inside the wiscy 30. We convert those two turnover into 10 points. The hawks also pick off a batted pass and return it to wiscy territory. All told they end up scoring 17 points off 3 wiscy turnovers, and win the game 24-21. Duncan ices it with a field goal in the early 4th, wiscy scores a td with 2 minutes left, to make it closer then the game was. After shaun beyer of all people secures the onside kick, we are good to go, run out the clock an celebrate on wiscy's field.

Experienced and emotionally stable OC, creative HC, good punter and FG kicker. Guaranteed 3 YPC from running backs.

Out-smart, not Out-Muscle

Luck would help, too. Like Wisconsin fumbling and turning over the final Iowa punt.

Jonathan Taylor for all his accolades (and they are deserved) is a fumbler. If he coughs one up and maybe stone pulls off an interception on a 3rd and 9. Iowa can pull it off. How we short of turnovers I can’t see it happening. Feels like a 24-13 game to me.

Wisconsin is a good team no doubt, but they aren’t a top ten team. If you subtracted the Michigan game they look about like Iowa. I’m not saying Iowa has a good chance to win, but they definitely aren’t too good to lose 3 games.

Yup. They absolutely dominated their noncon and Michigan, but have looked different since. They are very much mortal.

Kirk is living in the coaching exhaust fumes of Wisconsin...that is a difficult trend to halt, especially on the road.

Hopefully this is "the" game Iowa comes out motivated and efficient. I would love to see a game where, when it is over, the discussions are, wow, Kirk and Brian really out-coached Wisconsin, stole one.

I don't have a good "feel" for this game, not sure what will happen. Iowa could win or easily implode in confusion, again.

Wont happen. But since we're here i would LOVE to see Dayvion Nixon line up at nose tackle in a 5-2 and be eyeball to eyeball with Wisconsin center Tyler Biadasz.

tl;dr version: Hawks bad, Badgers gooood

The only time in the last 10 years that I felt that there was no way in hell Iowa would win was two years ago.....Ohio State. They are capable of winning any game, capable of losing any game. It is great to be a Hawkeye.

A true 5-2 is not a great idea. There's a reason it's the only teams to run it are HS teams.
The 5-2 used to be a preferred defense to go against wishbones or the old wing-T. It required rangy athletic defensive ends who could read the QB's keys and blow up triple options like Adrian Clayborn did in the first half of the 2010 Orange Bowl against Georgia Tech.

We ran our base 4-3 against GT, all game. Game is on YouTube if you wanna go check.

What we did different is had the OLB and WLB hanging over the end man on the LOS as alley/QB players, while the DEs played the FB dive to QB, leaving the MLB as a free-hitter and the CBs and Ss to play the pitch man. That, and Norm Parker had our defense disciplined as hell that game. Still a beautiful defensive performance.

I'm not hating on the 5-2, the HS team I coach for ran it a ton this year because we face a lot of Wing-T and Wishbone offenses. But as far as higher level football goes, it's dead because you can drop back and abuse the LBs in coverage. It's great at it's one job, stopping the run, but it's about as flexible as a piece of balsa wood.
