Schwartz: Make 2017 All About Akrum Wadley

I don't know but 15-17 touches a game sounds right so as to not wear him down. He's still south of 195 lbs isn't he? No way Kirk runs him into the ground to make him a Heisman contender. Plus maybe AW has made it known he wants to stay healthy to be drafted early in the NFL next year, who knows.

I just don't think there is much difference in a handful of extra carries a game. With all the practices and everything else a student athlete does, 4 or 5 carries a game won't be the difference between being fresh and being worn down. If he needs to be fresh, give him less carries in practice.

Not sure about him being better than Greene, Shonn was a beast his final year. 15 carries/game isn't much, hell he could get nearly half of that on one drive. It would be nice if one of our other RBs steps up to take some of the between the tackles stuff...and we threw in the flat a little more to AW, or pitch the ball wide to get him in space, but that kind of fumble risk isn't something KFz is likely to warm up to.

How bout 15 carries and 5 receptions... 20 touches/game.

I know he's just a freshman but you'd think they'd mix in some Toren though I may just be saying that cause he looked good running last Friday. Toks too maybe.

Carries and touches fluctuate so much anyway, depending. One game he might get 13 touches, the next time it'd be 27.

If Wadley isn't getting the touches because he really can't handle them, I can see the argument for wanting Greene. But if I had to pick between the two for one carry, under any circumstance you can think of. I would pick Wadley. In my opinion, he is more likely to break a big run and he is more likely to pick up short yardage if you need it. People always think you need to be big to be a short yardage back, but Wadley is really good at making the first guy miss and he is really good at avoiding solid hits and falling forward for extra yards. That makes him a great short yardage back.

I know people will read this and assume I'm dissing Greene but that's not the case. Greene was unreal good. I just think Wadley is a little better.

I'm not going to beat ya up over it even though as of today I disagree with you. I have an open mind to where Wadley could easily change my mind this year. Greene just was an absolute monster of a work horse for an entire season.
He went over 100 yards every game that season and carried the team. Wadley will have every chance to do it too just in a different way. He’ll be catching passes more and be asked to do other things Greene couldn’t do. But it’ll be a lot to ask for Wadley to shoulder the team week in and week out like Greene did. Remember last yr he got the benefit of being fresher throughout games due to Daniels. The D was softened up due to Daniels taking his fair share of the pounding. It just won’t be quite as easy this year for Wadley especially since he’ll be the focal point of the defenses. I look forward to cheering for Wadley to do his thing out there. I’ll just be impressed as all get out if he can have a season as impressive and impactful that Greenes was.

Exactly.. Hampton that year with Greene could have shouldered more touches than he did but they instead went with the work horse more. I think the staff envisioned Daniels being that same type of work horse but he kept getting nicked up here and there the last few years. So when you have multiple capable backs why not use them all and not wear out any one guy and still be as successful or more so. Seems to be the thing nowadays. Can't really say it's the wrong way to go.. But it sure makes RB records tougher to break going forward.

This is exactly the philosophy that made the WR more valuable in Fantasy Football then the RB position as a whole. There are typically 2-3 RB's that maybe are worth taking first. With the multiple backs, now is a QB and WR game so you see many WR's going the first round in FF. Years ago, most took a RB in the first round.

I think Greene was lugging around 25-28, sometimes 30 carries a game.

OMG yes. Don't get me started on FF. In a lot of leagues a goal line back that gets you a td or two a game is worth more than a guy that gets 20 touches for 79 yards and no tds. so frustrating

Make 2017 about Wadley. Sure I agree with that, but isn't that primarily because there isn't really anyone else to make the season about? I can't remember going into a season with less offensive firepower. I actually feel bad for BF... kind of.

The trouble is without a supporting cast defenses are going to be able to load up to stop AW. He has home run hitting ability so realistically he just needs to break off a few big ones a game.

IMO there is a huge difference between the wear and tear of being the primary back having to work hard for the 2-3 yard runs that a primary back often has to, than being the second guy who gets around 15-20 touches.

Can he do it? Absolutely.

Sorry for being a Debbie Downer but I can't recall ever being less excited for an Iowa football season. Who knows, that's usually right about the time we go on one of those runs.

This is simple really. Wadley came back. He wants to run the ball. Let him. Run the kid until the wheels fall off. He will tell ya when he is spent. Getting a player in the Heisman ballot is as good as a CFP appearance. Jewel will be on a ton of awards lists this year. I imagine we will have an OL on some awards ballots. If Wadley can get on all the RB ballots and the Heisman, we would have so much credibility on the recruiting trail. I would love to see Jewel take the Butkus, Daniels take the Outland and Wadley to take the Doak Walker. I know it's extremely unlikely, but man wouldn't that be sweet.

Yep, sounds like the makings of a KF 7-5 team.

I won't apologize for being tired of the same ole same ole. My hope is the Brian and his new QB coach can bring some magic to the offense that we haven't seen for a while.

3 award winners would be equivalent to a 10 or 11 win season IMHO.
