School Colors are Black and OLD GOLD, not YELLOW.

Correct. I've heard that Evy introduced it himself and he called it "new gold". I call it Bright Gold.

All the "gold" on the '58 throwback unis matched nearly perfectly with the gold that is used in the endzones - which is the official school-sanctioned shade of gold. It looked good to me. Had a bit of a bright-but-dirty look to it.

The shade of gold that is currently used on the helmet (stripe & tigerhawk) has that same slightly darker shade to it. Darker, in fact, than what is currently used on the pants, which are more yellowish. I'd like to see them make the pants that darker shade of gold. Make it match please.

I do not like YELLOW, and will not by any Iowa merchandise that uses YELLOW.

You hit the mark. Everyone else listen to this man. I own a helmet, and the tigerhawk is definitely not yellow. I agree that the pants need to match the color of the tigerhawk. Our pants are almost yellow, I will give that to the others in this thread that said we are yellow. We are definitely not old gold, like Purdue, ND. School officially says we are, but we're not. Also, the throwback unis were not yellow, but in fact, a deeper shade of gold than our current tigerhawk. I liked that. Call it "bright but dirty", "new gold" or I call it: "mustard gold", but it's not yellow. If you set it next to a yellow piece of paper, post it note, whatever. The original gold used by the university was very similar to that on the Arizona State helmet, actually.

The thread soliciting opinions on throwback uni's got me thinking. Apparently the majority of fans don't want to ever move away from the Pittsburgh Steelers copy-cat uni's because they are traditional or people associate us with a winning program or because ...
I say Yada, Yada, Yada. They aren't even our actual school colors. It is Black and THIS:

We are frauds by wearing black and YELLOW! Does anyone know when it began?
What other traditional power based their uni's on a pro team's design. Alabama? Florida? USC? Michigan? Texas? I can't think of one.

I say keep the Tiger Hawk but go back to our true colors. A black helmet with an OLD GOLD Tiger Hawk. Or an OLD GOLD helmet with a black Tiger Hawk? And while we are at it, why not drop the stripe from the helmet and go with a matte finish for the black helmet and a metallic finish if OLD GOLD.
Black Home Jersey's with Old Gold pants. No stripe.
Black pants with no stripe for the white road uni's. Black numbers outlined in OLD GOLD or vice versa. Maybe lose all the stripes? A leaner meaner look?

It would be a merchandising bonanza for the University. I for one would not want to be the last one in Hawkeye Nation sporting a Black and YELLOW foam finger or a Black and YELLOW "WELCOME" mat while everyone else is doing the OLD GOLD thing.;)

The Pittsburgh Steelers look may have been a brilliant move by Hayden, or it may have been gimmicky. Regardless, we established a winning program long ago. So how about a little bit of compromise? Keep the Tiger Hawk but change the color scheme. Keep some of the 30 year "tradition", but isn't it time to move forward? Or back if you will?

I am all for going to old gold and getting rid of this day-glo yellow crap.
I would love to see throwback uniforms become the norm.

consider that what you're looking may not be completely accurate. that swatch may or may not be set up for web/screen display or print- which there is and can be a huge sometimes difference.

I would argue that gold is pretty close to the color you see on our helmets currently as is. Another consideration, is that gold in gloss on a black gloss helmet will always "appear" different than it would on screen/print for anyhow... if you're wanting to play color swatch police.

This thread reminds me of Dana Carvey's grumpy old man.....

I'm old and I'm not happy. Everything today is improved and I don't like. I hate it. In my day, we didn't have plastic yellow helmets that looked like the Pittsburgh Steelers. The jerseys were old gold and we wore leather helmets w/no face masks. You sweated your *** off, lost an eye and got hit in the head so many times that you forgot where you lived. That's the way it was and you liked it. We loved it.

Back in my day, we didn't have hair dryers. If you wanted to blow dry your hair, you stood outside during a hurricane. Your hair was dry, but you had a sharp piece of wood clear driven through your skull. That's the way it was and you loved it. Whoopee, I'm a human head kabob.

Back in my day, a child would open a gift and within seconds he would burst into flames or lose a limb.

Agree with you on the Steelers knock-off look. Have never liked that. Worked for Hayden but is time to move on. Keep the tigerhawk and blend in more traditional elements that actually speak, rather than negate, Hawkeye history. Loved the throwbacks yesterday.

So, if we change our uniforms to the throwbacks, and replace the 'new gold' with 'old gold', we'll win Big Ten titles and NCGs? Gotcha...
