Mansell will stick it out. Tough kid and given the chance could change that offense.

He won't get that chance. Iowa runs a pro style set and that ain't changing. The only way he sticks around is as a three deep or if he gets good at catching footballs.
Then why did we recruit him in the first place? That argument makes no sense.
Have you even seen the kid? 6’3”, can make every throw and can move. Don’t be fooled by this dual threat stuff. He’s a pocket passer who just happens to be able to run. Completed 70% of his passes his senior year in the top Texas Division. Take a look at Iowa history, seems to be the type of QB who wins at Iowa.

Stanley has two more years and Petras is on deck. My money says Mansell doesn’t play unless he’s catching the ball instead of throwing it. Petra’s is a cookie cutter Iowa QB and will fit perfect with what O’Keefe does.

If Petras red shirts then Mansell could be a Senior starter and Petras could have 2 years after. Of course God forbidding a Stanley injury.

Barring any injuries I see Petras as a 3 year starter, same as Stanley. There’s really no reason to throw anyone in for a single year and waste one of Petras’ seasons. Mansell is in an awkward position timing-wise being in between the two, similar to Wiegers this year.
He’s only got one year of potential starting, so he’d be green when he did come in without the benefit of getting better and coming back for another year. At the same time you’d be flushing one of Petras’s years when he could be getting experience. Lose/lose in my opinion.
Because they just don't work out, not because we intended to sit them for five years. That's asinine.
Also, you're overestimating Mansell's athletic ability. He can run, sure, but he's not cut out for receiver.

I never said anybody intended him to sit for five years. I’m pretty sure when Mansell was recruited and signed that no one knew Spencer Petras was going to commit. That’s the way it works. Same thing happened with Wiegers, he was caught between to QBs who were better than him and he never played.
I don’t think anyone would say we recruited him and intended him to sit for five years. He just didn’t work out.
Since when is 6’5” cookie cutter Iowa? I think Stanley’s the first one that big. Putting a lot of stock in a kid who hasn’t seen Big 10 talent and played at a lower level Cali school. He may have beat Goff’s records but Goff didn’t walk right in and play either. Don’t anoint him yet.

We're already anointing Petras as the heir to QB without really having seen him or Mansell in college action. That seems to be premature.

Yes I see your point, but the scenario requires a few bridges to be built. First and foremost Iowa will play the QB that gives them the best chance to win. If the coaches decide that a Senior Mansell is a better option then Sophomore Petras then they will play Mansell. I doubt they care to flush a season just to get an underclassmen an extra year of experience.

This entire board is nothing but people's opinions. Mine is that Petras is better than Mansell, fits Iowa's system better, and due to Mansell being sandwiched in between Stanley and Petras he won't be a starting QB. Feel free to disagree.
Without seeing these guys do anything in a game yet we are just guessing. Here's what I do think and I hope I'm right for a change. And that is that these two guys Mansell and Petras are a better combo for both backing up Stanley in the short term and also the long term then what Wiegers/Boyle would have been. (obviously Wiegers only has the one more year I know but you get what I mean)

I don't necessarily disagree. I believe on a glance that you are correct that Petras fits the prototype better. I'm just saying there is alot of time and alot of fluid mechanics that need to line up. The future is just to unpredictable at QB for me to feel so strongly one way or another meaning I certainly wouldn't write Mansell off.

Do you believe that factors into the current staff's player evaluation? Because I don't.
How hands on has Brian been in recruiting? Be it with Mansell before he was OC and now with going after Petras. Obviously Mansell being a Texas kid he was in Davis's wheel house. But was BF involved with it at all then and to what extent was he involved going after Petras?
