Running the Football

Whatever happened to the "scratch where it itches" philosophy? Oh wait... that was another coach. Where's Hayden Fry when you need him?

The Maryland defense had no answer for Weisman, and Canzeri was having a pretty nice go of it as well. This is a hard loss to accept. I'm not typically a big fan of "ground & pound", but that's what the doctor should have ordered for that game; particularly when their QB was out... just control the clock and slam it down their throats relentlessly. Mix a little play action in there to keep them honest - KOK would've delivered this game for us.
REMEMBER WHEN THEIR 3rd STRING QB WAS IN THE GAMR BECAUSE THEIR OTHER 2 QUARTERBACKS WERE INJURED?!

REMEMBER WHEN THEIR RUNNINGBACK WAS HURT TOO?!

HOW DID WE LOSEEEEEEE???¿¿¿ oh my lanta im having a heart attack i think

I honestly thought that two-thirds of the plays would go to Weisman to start the second half.

I thought when Weisman scored the TD after the long run, we would go right back to him the next series. I thought we'd be right in the game as the defense started to get tired. Instead, we went spread (probably for the GDGD "surprise" effect).

Yep. Me, too.

Mark Weisman was averaging 7.8 yards per carry. He was wrecking face, Maryland had no answer. He should had had 25-30 carries.

MW's avg jumped to 7.8 after his 38 yard run but I agree he was still getting 4.5 to 5 ypc before the big run.

It was just the most brutally stupid play calling not to mix in run and pass, try some different pass patterns like a quick slant or a 8-10 yard slant/in pattern and use the middle of the field.

I honestly thought GD was starting to mix things up pretty good but he called a lot of run plays in the 3rd qtr when we had the wind and never went deep once and then he passed like crazy into the wind in the 4th qtr.

Not a good play chart and film for Offensive Coordinator 101 class.

When you try to meld two different styles of offense into a single plan, you get two offenses that don't work. When are we going to admit that the base offense that Iowa had been running for years, which is the same one that Alabama, MSU, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio St. (gasp), and a bunch of other successful programs run, is what we have SORT OF moved away from... with horrible results. No, we were not able to run a pro style O under our previous OC that was as successful as we wanted it to be. But, now that we have run a hybrid for 3 years with terrible results, we know that is not the answer. Seed corn companies in Iowa know when to get the hell off of the bus when its going over a cliff. That would be our next move, if we have the guts to do it.

This is why we lost, period. And this is on Davis, and Kirk by default.

Yes, JR struggled, turnovers hurt, bad tackling hurt, a bad call on not reversing the fumble hurt....But NOT running the ball....LOST this game!!! This is Idiotic and there is no explanation other than utter incompetence by Greg Davis.

This alone should get Greg Davis fired, but if KF can't/won't see this then....it will be his undoing as well.

Hell, I don't care if we are úconservative, even boring ! But 37 pass plays in a row, one being Another idiotic play call that has now cost us 2 pick 6's ...dammmnit, THAT is not conservative!!! That's just stupid.

And they didn't even do it very well. Just over 15% of the pass attempts went for over 10 yards, and the average yards per pass attempt was 4.4, factoring all yards gained or loss per play, or around 8 yards per completion. Currently Jake is 110 out of 114 in the NCAA in average yards per completion at 9.74, last place is 9.15. This was a full yard below that.

Not alot of Hay Ramilton...
Wheres he been this year?

Our pass-only play calling late in the game put our OL in a position they have never been in before. The Maryland DL was pinning their ears back and not respecting the run - and lets acknowledge the fact our OL scheme requires the balance of run/pass to be effective. Plus our big OL likes to lean on teams and I think they got tired pass-blocking for 40 straight plays.

Not running the football means the defense is not respecting the play action which allows LBs to stay in coverage and not commit to supporting the run - hence the underneath routes were not open and we all know JR was not looking downfield for more than a split second. His checkdowns were covered as the defense was not out of postition.

This was a receipe for failure and fooled no one. Just another example of the p-poor game day coaching that has plaqued the KF tenure.

try some different pass patterns like a quick slant or a 8-10 yard slant/in pattern and use the middle of the field.

We ran a quick slant when we were down 17 and I told my wife "we must really be desperate, breaking out a complicated pattern like the quick slant."

I still think this was jakes last audition for the starting job. It's only thing that makes some sense, is for KF to give him every chance to take control.

Of Course if he plays every snap against NW, then nevermind, they are morons
