Ruddock has done okay on his first two starts, but it's really a shame that we didn't have a chance to try anything exciting since the score was so close the entire game.
I'm not saying that Ruddock shouldn't be the started, but I do think that Beathard looked good at the spring game. I also think that if the QB situation is as close as we were lead to believe leading up to Week 1 Beathard definitely has the ability to make plays.
Now for overall game impressions. I'm glad we used LeShaun Daniels this week. For the most part he looked as-advertised. He didn't get any of the big breaks since we were relying on Weisman so heavily, but I think that by the end of the year he could potentially start seeing a bigger workload.
Like everyone else, I'm bummed they didn't challenge the bad spot on 4th down... but as anyone who watched the Thursday night NFL opener, challenge decisions don't always make it down to the sideline in time. That being said, that bad spot was definitely on the coaching staff. Someone in the press box needs to be watching the TV instant replays.
The play calling was awful this week. Honestly, I felt like I was watching a re run of one of last years games. It was really sad.
I was also pretty bummed about how empty the student section was today. Today is probably the smallest crowd that I have ever seen at Kinnick. Don't get me wrong, there were still a ton of people there... and in general enthusiasm and support was not lacking... But you can definitely tell that the fans are getting tired of these close games, "bend but not break defense", and unimaginative play calling.
I also don't understand our hurry up offense at all. It definitely doesn't seem like hurry up to me. I guess we... technically??? do no-huddle, but our version of no huddle is the slowest that I have ever seen.
Last but not least. I see a lot of FIRE Ferentz here on the board... but I think more importantly someone needs to fire the band director. The song selection at half time is almost as unimaginative as GD's playcalling. If I hear another best of Journey, best of MJ, best some boring 80s rock band I'm going to lose my mind. Maybe I was losing my mind in the heat, but I swear we do that same Journey half time show every year and nobody cares. I don't know if we're doing these songs to revive some 80's good old day nostalgia at Kinnick (Because we were good back then)... but this crap is going to have to stop.
