Ruddock did okay today but Beathard should get some snaps + my overall impressions

Ruddock has done okay on his first two starts, but it's really a shame that we didn't have a chance to try anything exciting since the score was so close the entire game.

I'm not saying that Ruddock shouldn't be the started, but I do think that Beathard looked good at the spring game. I also think that if the QB situation is as close as we were lead to believe leading up to Week 1 Beathard definitely has the ability to make plays.

Now for overall game impressions. I'm glad we used LeShaun Daniels this week. For the most part he looked as-advertised. He didn't get any of the big breaks since we were relying on Weisman so heavily, but I think that by the end of the year he could potentially start seeing a bigger workload.

Like everyone else, I'm bummed they didn't challenge the bad spot on 4th down... but as anyone who watched the Thursday night NFL opener, challenge decisions don't always make it down to the sideline in time. That being said, that bad spot was definitely on the coaching staff. Someone in the press box needs to be watching the TV instant replays.

The play calling was awful this week. Honestly, I felt like I was watching a re run of one of last years games. It was really sad.

I was also pretty bummed about how empty the student section was today. Today is probably the smallest crowd that I have ever seen at Kinnick. Don't get me wrong, there were still a ton of people there... and in general enthusiasm and support was not lacking... But you can definitely tell that the fans are getting tired of these close games, "bend but not break defense", and unimaginative play calling.

I also don't understand our hurry up offense at all. It definitely doesn't seem like hurry up to me. I guess we... technically??? do no-huddle, but our version of no huddle is the slowest that I have ever seen.

Last but not least. I see a lot of FIRE Ferentz here on the board... but I think more importantly someone needs to fire the band director. The song selection at half time is almost as unimaginative as GD's playcalling. If I hear another best of Journey, best of MJ, best some boring 80s rock band I'm going to lose my mind. Maybe I was losing my mind in the heat, but I swear we do that same Journey half time show every year and nobody cares. I don't know if we're doing these songs to revive some 80's good old day nostalgia at Kinnick (Because we were good back then)... but this crap is going to have to stop.

One last thing... I know I am probably beating a dead horse with this one... I graduated in 2010 (the year that we won the Orange Bowl). I really want to know what happened with the drop off in talent. I know John Miller has posted the statistics here numerous times, but whatever happened to our recruiting following the Orange Bowl win is obviously complete ineptitude on somebody's part. I'd really like to get the inside scoop on what the hell was going on, because our program was looking very good in 2010. What the hell happened?

That being said, I think we have some great players on our team now.... I'm just kind of concerned about the whole stealing MAC recruits thing that we've been doing (especially after the last two seasons).

We are still lacking for wide receivers. I am particularly excited about our offensive line play because when no one respects the pass it's hard to block for the run and we ran for a bunch today even when our receivers were covered up. We will have problems in league play when single coverage can cover the pass and we get down to running for 1-2 yards a play.

The defense looked pretty good for a bunch of young guys. Penalties and turnovers can get fixed. It was an ugly win. That's what inexperienced kids do early in a season.

Agreed. Not sure what was going on with Powell today. I was hoping we'd see another big play from him, but he was targeted maybe once and I don't think he had any receptions.

One positive development with receiving is that we used the TE's a bit more today. Fiedorowicz and Duzey both had some nice receptions.

We would have seen Bethard today had Iowa done what they should have and blown the doors off Missouri State.

Re: Ruddock did okay today but Beathard should get some snaps + my overall impression

We might still be able to beat a linebacker with a WR so we need a guy willing to catch the ball in traffic. Maybe that's Vandeberg. Doesn't look the part physically but mentally he seems tough. Powell could be the deep threat but for some reason his drop meant the bench but Shumpert's drops were forgiven.

Jake did absolutely nothing wrong to even share time.. Now had we not seen drop after drop today and dumb penalties to derail drives we would of been up 30 at the end of 3 and seen our backup.

I am not impressed with Rudock at all. He just cannot get the ball down field. Every time he tries to throw deep, he can't connect.

I agree, I don't think Jake did anything "wrong" per se. I just think that there is no harm in playing 2 (or even 3) QBs (similar to what NW does) when we're still trying to figure out what they're capable of. Today should have been the day to do this regardless of the fact that we were unable to run up the score.

I think Ferentz and GD are playing it "safe" because they were worried about getting another loss, which is why they ran Weisman so much today. That being said, I think it's absolutely ridiculous that they would even feel the need to play it safe against such an awful opponent.

Re: Ruddock did okay today but Beathard should get some snaps + my overall impression

I saw Jake looking downfield for the deep stuff, nothing there and the same old receivers not getting separation, and he checked down...which is what he is supposed to do. He looks better than any young Iowa QB since Drew Tate. Light years ahead of where Stanzi was in 2008, Jake in 2007.

Re: Ruddock did okay today but Beathard should get some snaps + my overall impression

Rudock wasn't our problem today. I actually think he's done a pretty decent job overall. I would have liked to see Beathard get some minutes too, but today wasn't the day, not when we let a team like Mo. St. hang with us the entire game. Not sure he'll get a chance now unless Rudock gets injured. Maybe W. Mich. or down the road, Purdue.

I didn't see that at all. How can you make that observation watching on television? I saw him take a few shots, and was never even close.

Re: Ruddock did okay today but Beathard should get some snaps + my overall impression

I agree with most, I don't think Ruddock is the problem. We just look very green and unpolished. As most predicted. . . this is a rebuilding/building year. I expect very little from this year.

And a break down on the band . . . really?

So you didn't think the pass to Kittle was downfield. It was a beautiful in stride throw about 30 yards downfield. What Jon is saying is that he did look downfield, but checked down because he didn't want a turnover due to coverage. That's good quarterbacking guys.

I know what he said, I am asking how he came to that conclusion. You can't observe downfield coverage watching the game on tv. Heck, you can't even tell where the QB is looking watching on tv.

Re: Ruddock did okay today but Beathard should get some snaps + my overall impression

Let me ask you...when we started with UNI in 2009 and blocked two field goals to win...did anyone think we would win the Orange Bowl? Then the close call with Arkansas State...did you think we would go to a BCS bowl. You won't confuse the 2013 defense with that group based on the pressure they could get with the front four, but these guys look like they are going to be able to stop the run on every team they play...thats a step. We do need to find an answer though to get someone to the QB. MS had 197 yards today and scored once on the defense....that's pretty solid.

Let the team develop. I personally don't think we have the right guys on the field enough...Powell needs to be out there just as a decoy, if nothing else. He can run guys off and create space in the secondary. T Smith is just non existent right now. That's surprising to me. Honestly, I think we start opening up the offense a bit more as Ruduck passes a few more tests...like a road game.

Re: Ruddock did okay today but Beathard should get some snaps + my overall impression

And Rudock is much more calm in the pocket than JVB ever was and he's played two games. Think about that...this kid is pretty cool in the pocket. I honestly think he's going to be special...he gets it...he learns quickly, and puts it to work immediately. If we protect him, he'll get the ball to the right guy.

Yeah he struggled hitting Kittle downfield.

Re: Ruddock did okay today but Beathard should get some snaps + my overall impression

People have been whining for a dual threat QB for years. Rudock has 3 scrambling TDs in 2 career games. He isn't Denard, but you got a guy making plays right in front of you.

Re: Ruddock did okay today but Beathard should get some snaps + my overall impression

A backup QB will never get any snaps - remember last year, remember Brad Banks junior year.
