McCabe is more of a backcourt player IMO

I haven't seen McCabe play but I was thinking that he would be a four in the more uptempo system.

It is going to be a rough year no matter how you slice it. No proven scorer in the paint. Only one proven ball-handler on the roster right now. If they have any chance of improving on the win total next year they will have to sign another PG, 2/3 of the freshman will have to contribute immediately and somebody unexpected of Brommer, Cougill or Archie are going to have to play big productive minutes to replace Fuller.

I think we know what Gatens and Cole are capable of. Maybe May will make a big improvement? Cully has potential but will have to be able to play at a higher pace of play and still cut down on turnovers. I just don't see enough ball-handling and athletic ability to be successful. In McCafferty's first year at Siena he had a similar situation and he relied on a veteran center to run the offense through (according to Siena posters). He won't even have that luxury next year.

Well, we have a veteran center in Cole. Maybe Cole has some untapped "point-center" skills, like Vlade Divac?

McCabe is a tweener between 3 and 4. We will see what he develops into with a little Big Ten strength and conditioning.

Yes, we need another ball handling guard. I have been hearing all along that an assistant is coming with a guard. With FM saying he IS going to sign one more player in the Spring signing period, MAYBE 2, it makes me think that Speraw has the guard in hand. This makes me think we might just be getting ready to hear about a top five JUCO PG coming to Iowa. Maybe.

FM wouldn't go out on a limb and say he was going to sign someone if he didn't know this was going to be the case. He is not a rookie at coming into a new situation. He knows what a huge mistake that would be.

Given Cole's ball-handling issues, I couldn't see running the offense through him, presuming you're being serious.

Why will Paybe be dead by the end of December when he basically was the only one who played point all of last year and he survived?

The first part of the year Tucker did play quite a few minutes at point (although not very well) so that did help. Cully did a good job given the circumstances but our PG was clearly the furtherest behind other Big Ten teams as a whole. I think Cully would do much better with a second ball-handler on the floor.

I assume you've been reading on McCaffery and the style of play he's promised to bring to Iowa this year, compared to the past 3 years.

I was impressed the way Culley played against Michigan in the Big Ten tournament. If he can have a game like that once in a while, we will be fine! I do agree thought, Fran needs to find someone to spell him a bit. If has to play 40 min a game each night, he is gonna be dawg tired by December!

I agree that depth is going to be part of the key to success when you begin talking of a more up-tempo style on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. I look for May's ball-handling to be much improved by the fall given his competive nature and the simple fact that he now has a year to look back on and gauge what worked/didn't work for him offensively.

We do need help at PG, but May and Payne are just going to get better and better. Cully did a good job as a freshman in a tough league not taking crap from anyone, and burning them pretty often to boot. Frankly I think Gatens was in a funk all year long, and maybe he'll blossom if he feels good about the new coach. If Marble can contribute and get some valuable PT, and we find at least one of those 6' 9" guys on the list who can get the job done down low with Jarryd, we have a fighting chance to move up in the world.
