Ron Artest

One more reason why NBA is more irrelevant as opposed to years ago!:(

Yes, cheap shots are a brand new thing. Most fans on this site just embarrass themselves when they try to talk about the NBA.

NBA is just Not entertaining anymore, imo. I'm a fan but the marketing, players, fan support just doesn't seem to work. I do miss the days of Bird, Jordan, magic and all that made the NBA what it was. It's a game, I suck at but I play it because I love the GAME!! $$$$$$ all It's about anymore, so unfortunate!!!

If Arest was a member of a JVG coached Knick team it would have been a playoff elbow... Since he isn't it was a cheap shot. Times are changn' son

Nah, there's no doubt the NBA is less physical but even going back 20 years if a ref catches, that he's getting T'd up and probably ran from the game. Maybe the refs miss it without instant replay, but any time a ref sees that it would be at least a T. And are you really trying to make the argument that an elbow to the back of a guy's head isn't a cheap shot?

Well the NBA marketing and game is working for a lot of people because they set all kind of post-Jordan ratings records during the playoffs last season. And it's always been about money. Go back twenty years and Magic Johnson is a greedy, coach killer who choked away the '84 finals. Funny how time changes things.

1 - the NBA is as intense as any other pro sport in the playoffs. Watch Game 7 of Lakers/Celts series a couple years ago for proof

2 - money is part of the deal, but watching guys like Durant, Kobe, and the like (who are the best at what they do) is 10 times better than watching any college hoops game.

3 - Harden is a trash-talking baffoon. Did he deserve the shot? Absolutely not. Nobody deserves an elbow to the head. Could he have ran anywhere else on the floor is the question. Watch games before this year against LA and see how many times he "bumps" into Gasol in the same fashion. Again, anybody that has watched an NBA game this year should understand what kind of player Harden is. He's Jalen Rose. Always running his mouth. Always trying to get in someone's head. Harden wouldn't have lasted a year in the 80's or early 90's. And don't even get me started on guys like Griffin and Rose who come out in the media and actually complain about getting fouled hard. But that is for another thread. As someone said in this thread, don't poke the bear that can snap at any time.

4 - Was it a cheap shot? Sure. Is Ron Ron a model NBA citizen? of course not. But Harden ran into him in my opinion. I've watched it several times. Harden ran directly in line of MWP. Did Metta see him? I don't know if that excuse flies as he claims. But Harden was being Harden. Again, he didn't deserve in elbow, but he didn't have to run into Metta either. And for the record, I do think Metta caught who he was out of corner of his eye, and I do think he was going to "clear" him out with an elbow, but I think Metta thought that elbow would be at his shoulder, not the head. It was vicious, it was idiotic and he will be supended. His reputation doesn't do him any favors when instances like this happen. MWP is the only player in the history of the finals to talk about his shrink in a post-game celebration interview for pete's sake (funniest thing I've ever seen other than Jerry Buss not having a clue where he was during that celebration). Metta isn't normal. But I don't think he was trying to hurt Harden.

I like this guy.

My favorite comments are the ones talking about NBA teams not playing defense. Automatic red flag that that poster doesn't watch any NBA coverage outside of SportsCenter.

I know, I used to be one of them. Then I actually started to watch the NBA with an open mind. Still think there are too many regular season games but overall a high quality product to watch. Most talented athletes on the face of the Earth. Can't wait for playoffs to start this weekend.

The comment about defense used to be true, as well as the "thuggish" image of the league. The first 6-7 years of the true post-Jordan era was just not good basketball, IMO. Very little defense played outside of Detroit and San Antonio, and a lot more bad images for the league (Malice in the Palace, etc.).

That's changed over the last few years, and while I'm still not a die-hard NBA fan, I can actually watch and enjoy a game now as a casual fan. I couldn't say that a few years ago.

Jordan, bird, and magic didn't make the NBA. wilt, russel, west, and hondo did.

magic, bird, and Jordan just carried the torch for a while.

Absolutely wrong. That is what I thought when I first watched teh replay, and I really wanted to believe it, because I am usually in favor of watching teh mentally ill play sports, but Harden did not instigate this.

Harden was trailing teh play, took one step forward after teh dunk (He was teh closest Thunder player to teh inbounding ball), Artest ran straight into him, without looking, and swung, again without looking. The only think Harden should have done differently to avoid a head injury is to strap on a helmet, otherwise it is 100% Artest being a psycho.

Never give teh psycho teh benefit of teh doubt.

Wilt and the rest started it. The NBA was in trouble in the late 70's and early 80's. Bird, Magic, and Jordan revived it.

Nba Finals Tape Delay | It Wasn't Always Magic for NBA - Los Angeles Times

CBS, then the league's network, didn't want this poor cousin of football and baseball to gum up its sweeps period. CBS executives didn't even want the NBA in prime time. Instead, they taped the weekday games of the finals and showed them at 11:30 p.m., when they figured they were going to get blown out in the ratings anyway by NBC's Johnny Carson, then the undisputed king of late-night television.

just like the NBA was in trouble in the post Jordan era and the current guys revived it again.

Colin Cowherd has this right on the money. The NBA doesn't play well in rural markets because a lot of people are uncomfortable with a bunch of rich black dudes as the face of teams/leagues.
