Rob Howe's article on the UM game, Lickliter

Also, i know Lick hates playing zone but isnt it worth a shot in some situations? At least for a couple possessions to get teams out of there comfort zone. Playing iowa is pretty easy - we play half court man to man and we are undersized. Not exactly a lot to game plan for there

I understand the sentiment, but I'm not sure that playing zone would get Michigan "out of their comfort zone." Michigan, itself, plays a lot of zone and, therefore, their offense likely practices against it quite regularly and is likely not uncomfortable playing against it in a game.

I would like to see Iowa vary its offensive scheme every now and then, however. Perhaps some low-post screens to open Fuller and Cole on the blocks or to create mismatches as defenders switch screens on guards cutting through the lane. To be honest, I'm not sure that would work against Michigan's 1-3-1 zone though.

Our offense was clearly a bigger problem against Michigan than was our defense.

Brommer is gone after this year. Payne is 50/50.

And just where did you come up with this? You say it like it's public knowledge.

Guess I was a little edgy and forgot to add "JMHO".

What is public knowledge is:

Three other pt guards under Lick, namely Tony Freeman, Jake Kelly and Jeff Peterson, all left the program early. In my opinion, JP leaving is by far the most damaging to future CP projections. Like Cully, he was a good kid that was expected to do much of the dirty work, like breaking the press by himself. He wasn't a great shooter but was good enough to demand respect and could break down a defense with the dribble. I didn't see JPete complain, nor did I see him get into trouble off of the court. And yet, he chose to leave the program.

If Payne leaves at the end of the year Lick wont be far behind. We need to keep players in the program and that is a possition we cant afford to lose.

I agree that Payne is unlikely to leave...of course I was shocked by Petersons leaving last year. Iowa is the perfect school for Cully...close to home, great league, tons of playing time...if he left, I would be shocked and calling for Licks immediate dismissal.

Jake and Tony weren't recruited by Lick.... Was Peterson?

Cully committed knowing who the coach was going to be and the system he ran.

If memory serves, Peterson was recruited initially by Alford, but Lickliter sealed the deal and Peterson committed after the hire. So JP knew what system he would be playing in when he committed.

Yeah but he didn't know he was going to be benched for the coaches "walk on" son who has no right even being on the floor for more than 4-5minutes a game.

It was one game take a step away from the ledge.

Dude, this kid would get waxed by a lot of small school Iowa players.

It is not that it was 'one game', it is the fact that he is playing more than a scholarship kid.

Lick better get away from the ledge unless he is bringing the golden parachute Barta gave him.

Based on the 15 minutes of basketball you've watched this year? Which really means that of those 15 minutes you may have seen 5 minutes of game time of JL.

Basically what I'm saying is, you're just regurgitating what you've heard because by your own admission, you haven't watched them play.

I thought Jon Miller had a rule that we were not supposed to rip on individual players. Tearing apart young Lickliter is mean-spirited and just plain wrong.

I am so sick and tired of all of the negative posts about Iowa basketball. You are all the same geniuses that wanted Tom Davis out, and then wanted Steve Alford out. Davis went on to build Drake into an NCAA tournament team, and now Alford (after winning two Big Ten tournament titles at Iowa) is doing the same thing at New Mexico. Do you really think that firing this coach will be the answer? Is it possible that we actually have a good coach and just a lousy fan base? Think about it. Indiana won one big ten game last year, but sold out its arena on most nights. Recruits saw this fan interest and want to play there; consequently, Indiana is getting better.

Iowa's fans wimp out and do not show up for the games. Why would any recruit want to go to Iowa right now?

I blame the lousy whining fans, not the coach.

Watched at least 10 of the games he played is senior year of HS.

FYI, I am actually giving in to go to the game this evening.

There are 3 reasons I plan to go:

a) Do not have pay for the ticket.
b) I despise Illinois.
c) It is $1 hot dog night

That is the single most funny thing I have ever ready on HawkeyeNation.

It is the fanbase that pushes recruits away, eh?

Is it the fanbase that has led Iowa to the worst 3 year run in the history of the program?

Or is it the fanbase that has decided a walk-on deserves more playing time than a kid that was actually offered D1 scholarships?

It's not like we just fell off of the turnip truck.
