Ricky Stanzi's Wonderlic Revealed: What's it Mean?

Probably nothing in the scheme of things- I thought he would be drafted in the third round pre-season and I think he will be drafted in the third round now. But if Stanzi develops into a quality NFL starter it will be a boon to stat nerds like me.

Stanzi might not have the high ceiling of a player like Gabbert or Locker, but the one thing I agree about with this author is that he might be overall the safest bet to be a solid pro out of all of the quarterbacks in the draft. If he becomes the next Tom Brady that would surprise me, but I would not be surprised at all if he has a long, positive career in the league.

I dont think many teams are exited about taking any of the QB in the Top 10 picks...after that, the value/cost factor is more palatable. You can take a 'risk' on a late 1st round QB pick. Stanzi still gets picked behind Gabbert, Newton and Mallet, IMO

The uncertainty surrounding Stanzi might turn out to be the best thing he has going. He's not viewed as a "ready now" option, and as such the teams likely to see value in him are teams that don't have an immediate need. Those teams are usually good teams and he will have the opportunity to learn under a solid signal caller without any pressure to play right now.

How great would it be for him to follow the Cassil career path that has him learn for 3 years under a Tom Brady, and sign a FA contract with a team of his choosing to be a starter.

BTW both the Colts and the Patriots could be in the market for a QB in the draft. Neither have a 3rd QB on the roster right now.

The Pats have a BOATLOAD of draft picks in the first three rounds this year. If Stanzi is there in the 3rd, I could see them taking him.

I personally think he'll be a pretty darn good NFL QB. I understand that some of the fans here don't think so because of some of the lackluster performances at the end of games in his senior year or his junior year in general. I'm willing to let stuff like that go for two reasons
1. At the end of those games we were trailing (usually after getting the lead at some point near the end and the defense giving up that lead) with bad field position most of the time. Defenses could tee off on Stanzi and the OLine in those situations.
2. The fact that he was able to make such a huge jump in performance from Jr to Sr year shows he has a lot of room to grow and the smarts/work ethic to do so.

In his Jr year the defense regularly bailed him out keeping games close enough so he could win them in the end, the opposite was true in his Sr year he bailed out the defense many times gaining the lead for us.

Maybe in just drinking to kool-aid but hes clearly a winner and deserves to be considered a top prospect.

A QB's success depends as much on the team and program as it depends on his skills. Hopefully Ricky ends up with a good team.

Ricky does kind of remind me of Keanu Reeves in the Replacements. Maybe with the lockout coming, there is a spot for him!!

I think the one thing that Stanzi has going for him more than anybody is work ethic. I don't think anyone in this class has or will take the leadership role and the "first in, last out" type mentality that we have heard about from Stanzi. I think that being in the 3rd round is ideal because as others have said, he will most likely get a better team at that point, and not have any pressure. I have no doubt that he will study and work his butt off until he gets a shot like Schaub under Vick, Kolb under McNabb, or Cassel under Brady.

I have read a lot of comments in various papers from owners and they all have said if you put Stanzi in a system that has a solid ground game, he will excel. I think we all watched him grow his last two years and I see him peaking in the NFL. Not saying he will be the next Brady, just saying he will play and eventually be a contributor.

Duff -

You are exactly correct. The best thing for Stanzi may be slipping down the board a bit to get to a good NFL organization instead of one looking for a starter to step in in 1-2 yrs. Let's face it, Stanzi wouldn't be ready right away in that setting but could do great behind a Brady or Manning for a few yrs. Slipping down to a solid organization is not bad.

Wouldn't it be something if NE took him in one of their mid-round pick & Capt'n Kurt ends up at NE in a few yrs.

The paycheck this day in age is great getting drafted in the first round, but if one gets drafted by a crappy organization, the money haul later & career might not turn out the best. See Chuck Long & the Detroit Lions.

Wonder what Chuck Long's career would have been like if drafted like a team like, let's say, the 49'ers, Buffalo or even Oakland back in the day.

He has a chance & that's for sure. His success could really have an impact on recruiting QB's at Iowa, which Iowa hasn't been really impressive over many many years. There haven't been many past Iowa QB's in the NFL.

Mark Vlasic may be the last that has really contributed & many on here are not old enough to even recognize his name.

Boy. Look out the rest of the NFL. NE has been very solid for many yrs which is quite odd for NFL franchises. They have done a great job, especially with picking up free agents to fill needs in the past.

Now they are in position to draft young talent & they are still on top. This is a team destined to be around for quite some time.

"The Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Test (formerly known as the Wonderlic Personnel Test (WPT)) is a twelve-minute, fifty-question test used to assess the aptitude of prospective employees for learning and problem-solving in a range of occupations. The score is calculated as the number of correct answers given in the allotted time. A score of 20 is intended to indicate average intelligence (corresponding to an intelligence quotient of 100; a rough conversion is accomplished via the following formula: IQ = 2WPT + 60."

I need to see what happens after Belichick and Brady leave, are they the steelers and keep on going or are they the Cowboys.

Still think he will be a chief based on Peloi's relationship with KF. Stanzi could come in and beat out Palko for that 3rd string job. More importantly, they just hired Jim Zorn as QB coach he wasn't a great HC, but he is a terrific QB coach. He would be exactly what Stanzi needs.

The other thing he has going for him is he's a good dude. Even if he doesn't pan out, he's going to stick around because people seem to really like him.
