Regarding Brust

Ben's latest Tweet:

Cully Payne coach on the floor...Lickliter coach on the bench! go hawks

http://twitter.com/BenBrustIowa11/status/10387222747

Why are we so concerned about Brust? If Lick is around for a 4th year (I thought he should have be given a 4th year) then Brust comes to Iowa. If Lick is fired/resigns then Brust may come to Iowa but may chose to go to another school.

If a new coach comes in why do we want any of the previous coaches players? That's all I have been hearing the past 3 years is how Alfords leftovers were so bad and Lick was stuck with pieces that don't fit. Well Licks left overs have just produced the worst basketball in Iowa history. Explain why we need any of them (I am joking with this statement as there are good pieces at Iowa, just like when Alford left ther were good pieces to work with).

My point is when Lick took over he had enough talent to do well if he would have been more flexible. His best record to date was with Alfords supposed crap leftovers.

I would expect a new coach to watch film, run practice and figure out how to make the current roster work.

I guess it's what happens when there are coaching change (If change happens), some palyers may transfer, some players may decommit, and some players will be nicely told to leave (ex. Bawinkle @ WVU when Huggins took over).

You make the decision based on THE COACH, not the players. Why analyze what recruits may/may not show up if Lick is reatained or fired.

There is no John Wall in the class. Then MAYBE you think a second about it.

I figure next year will be rough reguardless who is coaching. If Lick is around your hope is the team wins about 4 more big ten games and a maybe 2-3 more non conference games. You hope the recruits show some upside and just hope they play teams a lot closer. Iowa was down 15-20 points a lot this year. If a new coach is hired you figure it will be a mess as well. You hope the new coach can weather the mess, and go recruit a differnece maker to gain hope for the next year.

I don't know. Why worry?

Hey Spank, I am curious.

What insight do you have into the program, other than posting on these boards and reading things like anyone can?

You thought Tucker would be the second coming and you felt like he was not a going to be a "problem child" when he came to Iowa after he had issues in his high school career. You also thought, at the start of the season, that this team would be much more competitive this year than they were.

So I am not trying to be a jerk, but why is your knowledge informed knowledge compared to others that post here that know nothing out of the ordinary?

I think this is an emotionally charged time. It's also incredibly fluid, and most of the stuff that is making its way to the boards has been echo chamber stuff, stuff that is being regurgitated and added to in an uncomfortable game of telephone.

There will be more of this in the coming days and weeks.

It's going to be tough for everyone to do this, but I think a few deep breaths are required right now. Maybe that's easy for me to say as I just got up from a six hour nap as I have caught the cold my daughter has been dealing with the for the last week and have had a chance to get away from this for a bit :)

I just want Brust here at Iowa...regardless who is coaching, He looks to be a heck of a player.

Spank....I respect your opinions, sources and love for Iowa bball, but you might want to think about taking a different tact. Frankly, you're coming off as a "know it all" and it's not becoming.

You are basically saying in every post "my sources are better than yours", which at this time you or anyone else has no idea if that is true or not. I'm glad you trust your sources, but I'm sure everyone else trusts their sources as well.

A better way to handle these times might be to dispute things by taking a softer approach. Instead of making statements such as "that's partially true", maybe try "well that's interesting, but my sources would dispute that...I guess we'll see who is right?"....just constantly flaming and acting like you have the "whole story" and everyone else knows nothing is a little childish and naive, especially for a mod on this site.

I mean we get it....you've got great contacts and sources, better than anyone, but you can't tell us anything as somehow you think it will blow your sources. We get it already. But, if you can't tell everyone "the real story" then maybe it would be best to not act like everyone else is misinformed.

It sucks when someone comes off sounding like a know it all and it cuts into the rest of us trying to sound like know it alls...but just remember, he has the right to be wrong just like the rest of us...and the "know it all" label is usually only thrown at people we disagree with. When we agree with them, they "always have good info and sources"...it's kind of how message boards work.

I think an announcement about Lick will take place no later then Sunday afternoon or Monday morning. Chance to make a splash with news during March madness. Now maybe a new coach won't come right away but I feel Lick news is soon coming.

That will not happen. Delany would be furious if Barta came out with news of a firing on the day of the selection show, and the womens selection show is on Monday, and Barta isn't going to **** on them by announcing that Lickliter is fired.

I know that the women don't have a strong following, but after everything they have accomplished this year, they deserve a few moments in the sun.

I addressed this (albeit like a smart-arse) yesterday; I apologize for the tone:

4 or 5 years ago, I was a bonafide Internet scourer, I don't do that anymore.

I appreciate the feedback. Honestly.

HawkeyeShane....those are good points. All I'm saying is NOBODY was in the players meetings except for Barta and that individual player, so we'll never know who's source is right and who's is wrong. So, for anyone to claim different is either arrogant or unwise. It's great to trust your source, but unless you were actually in the room it's nothing more and nothing less than a rumor.

I guess I believe that some of the players might actually say one thing to Barta and something else to their friends, reporters, message board guys, etc. I think that's more than likely.

This is why I think everyone should be more understanding or tolerant of others "sources", as we have no idea who is right and who is wrong.

That's all I'm saying....

Spank....I still enjoy your opinions and more importantly, your passion for Iowa Basketball....it's awesome!

The person he is talking to doesn't want there name out there. Trust me, I know who spank is talking to and spank's info is good. I have also chatted with this person in the past couple days as well.

McHawkin....you're missing the point. I don't doubt for one second that Spank thinks his source is right and I have no reason to doubt that it isn't. BUT, other people on this site ALSO think that their source is right.

Could it be possible that Spank's source MIGHT be wrong on this one and somebody else's source MIGHT be right? I don't know and the facts are YOU OR NOBODY else does either (except Barta).....that's the truth. Unless YOU, SPANK or OTHER POSTERS were physically in the room with Barta and the individual player, then NONE of you really know what happened. It is complete speculation flamed by unnamed sources. I'm POSITIVE Spank's sources are good, but a little understanding that you might not have the entire story would be wise, in my opinion.

Treating other posters sources as being instantly wrong, is an assumption by you and others that ultimately might make you like look an "a$$"....maybe, maybe not.

I just don't think the "my source is better than your source" game is productive. Most of us are trying to read as much as we can and make our own evaluation of the situation, until Barta gives us the final word. Trust me, I take things that are said by Jon and Spank with more "truth", as they've earned that respect. But, I don't just instantly throw out everyone else's take either.

The article in HawkCentral is no surprise, kids who havent had to spend any time with the coach have no reason to not want to play for him, and their plans are based (in part) on him being the coach, but given the experiences of kids leaving every year, I bet we would see them adopt the same attitudes that players that have endured a year or more with him have. I hope Barta keeps that in mind and makes his decision based on the kids who are going through it, as the others havent dealt with it yet and really dont know(of course, he will have to consider the W/L factors, progress on the court, boosters and the money flow, and the fanbase, for if they dont believe, this dog wont hunt).

It could be possible because at one time the source swore that they thought Ben was going to go to Butler, but Ben chose to come to Iowa because of his relationship with Lick and Walthall. So, if Lick and Walthall are out then I think it will be tough for Ben to stay a Hawkeye. Although I really hope he does stick with his commitment to Iowa.

Having spoken with a few more folks on this, I am not as confident as I was when I posted this. The person I spoke with had knowledge based on a Thursday evening conversation with Brust. That person is very close with him, and I felt good about posting what I did based on that.

But I have spoken with too many people late yesterday and today (including Spank) that are less sure of where Ben stands...he really likes Todd...and he is watching this intently like we all are, and has some concerns. Stuff like this is fluid, as it always is with potential coaching changes and how that affects their status. It's certainly one to keep an eye on, and we will, just like all of the commits.

How confident are you in your statements made Friday morning on your show about there being a change of leadership in the basketball program?

I don't think that there is a bridge to go back over, and I believe Iowa will have a vacancy sometime this week. I have not changed my mind on that one bit.
