Reasons Pearl will come/ not come to Iowa

When I have trouble making a tough decision, I like to make pro/con list. Pretend we are Bruce Pearl, and we have an offer to coach Iowa. I wll make the cons, since I don't think he will come.

Reason why Pealr won't come to Iowa:

1. Steven Pearl, his son, plays for UT. The first reason anyoen gives why Kirk Ferentz won't go anywhere else is because his son plays for Iowa. Why don't people assume Pearl's loyalty are to his son? Also, Steven is a senior next year, and has already red shirted, so he cannot follow his dad if he leaves.

2. I beieive he has three other children who live in Knoxville as well. One is a UT student, one is in HS, and the other in MS. I believe their mother lives in Knoxville as well.

3. For all of the talk about a new practice facility to be built at Iowa, UT has a one year old, state of the art facility, as well as a newly remodeled arena.

4, Bruce Pearl may be a God in Iowa City should he come, but he is already a God in Knoxville. For all of the talk about him being third banana in the UT heirarchy, that is just not the case.

5. Iowa is a rebuilding project, and UT is a powerhouse.

6. Will he abandon his top ten recruiting class?

7. He last coached at Iowa 18 years ago. It is not like he has always been around. He coached here for 6 years, and he has coached at UT for 5. I would assume his loyalty is to the Vols, not to Iowa.

I would like to conclude this list by stating that I have been spectacularly wrong in many of my predictions the last few days, and I would be fairly pleased to be proved wrong again.

Now, what are the pros? Why would he come here?

I agree with all of the cons listed by Ghost and dont think he will come. I also agree with Rdubbs that the main reason that could change would be big time $$$

People always say that Pearl really wants to come back to Iowa sometime. I dont know him so i have no idea if that is true. If its true, we have a chance

You make some valid points.

But there is also the fact that his assistants have pretty strong Iowa ties, and they may weigh into it. In the end, it's Pearl's choice, but maybe they can influence him.

Regarding the practice facility "to be" built.. Isn't it actually BEING built? It will be done by the end of Pearl's first year in Iowa City, although I'm not sure on the exactly timing, or what the schedule is. He should be able to sell that facility to recruits right away, I would think.

#5.. True. But Tennessee is a powerhouse because Pearl made it that way. It wasn't so when he was hired. In fact, I think it's debateable that TN has more basketball tradition than Iowa, save for recently.

Pearl is hardly a shoe in, and in fact may still be a longshot, but I think there may be a few reasons for him to make the move as well.

Another con could be that he already said no to us the last time we were searching. So what has really changed since then. It's true that there is more talent on the team now. And we have a practice facility in the works. But that would have been achieved anyway had he come three years ago.

I would love to see him come to Iowa. Just not sure if it's likely.

1. Bigger paycheck.....coaches like to get paid as much as anyone else.
2. Opportunity to go from 3rd tier (behind football and WBB) to the 1st tier (shared with KF).
3. Reunite with his mentor, Mr. Davis, who still lives in Iowa City.
4. Give his assistants opportunities to go back home (all of his assistants have Iowa ties).
5. Be part of an expanded Big 10 that will bring along more opportunities (both compensation and recruiting).

1. He makes 2.3 already.

2. He has already won SEC titles

3. Why hasn't Kirk Ferentz left for a big paycheck? Maybe Bruce isn't interested?

4. He isn't from Iowa. This isn't his home. He has coached at UT for as long as he coached at Iowa, and he has turned a down team into a winner.

5. Would he abandon the chance to continue to coach his own son for money?

So you think it is easier to win a Big Ten title than an SEC title? Just go by the seedings of this years tournament and see which conference schedule would be harder to win:

The Big Ten:
#2
#4
#4
#5
#11

SEC:
#1
#4
#6
#10

Good list. I think the kids family sitation could be a big one. Would his son transfer to Iowa? Would the rest of his family want to move here? I read recently he went through a divorce which means relocating his family might be more complicated.

I don't see Tenn winning anymore of those titles with Kentucky back. Pearl himself mentioned today that SEC is not a powerhouse conference as to where Big Ten is.

How about this for why Pearl should be our No. 1 choice?

Per 3/15/2010 - Vols Will Play San Diego State On Thursday Night At 9:45 - Sports - Chattanoogan.com

Bruce Pearl In The NCAA TournamentBruce Pearl has now led his team to the NCAA Tournament 16 times in 18 years as a head coach … Pearl owns a 23-14 career-record in the NCAA Tournament … He led Southern Indiana to a 16-8 NCAA Tournament record that included an NCAA Division II national championship in 1995 and a runner-up finish in 1994 … He has a 7-6 record in NCAA Division I Tournaments … Pearl has led his team to the round of 16 in three of the last five years—one of only nine head coach in the country to have done so … In 2005, he directed UW-Milwaukee to the Sweet Sixteen and repeated the feat in 2007 and 2008 with Tennessee.

Steven Pearl will be a Senior next year, so it seems unlikely that he would transfer. I don't know that for sure, but he already red shirted, so if he leaves UT, he won't ever play college ball again.

In addition, he is also engaged to a woman from Tennessee, so who knows how willing she will be to move to Iowa.
