Reasons Pearl will come/ not come to Iowa

I've said before Pearl is a pipe dream, but to quote Spank's recent tweet, I'm smokin' the hell out of that pipe right now.

FWIW the Tenn Scout site doesn't have a single thread about this so it doesn't look like they are that concerned.

1. Bigger paycheck.....coaches like to get paid as much as anyone else.
2. Opportunity to go from 3rd tier (behind football and WBB) to the 1st tier (shared with KF).
3. Reunite with his mentor, Mr. Davis, who still lives in Iowa City.
4. Give his assistants opportunities to go back home (all of his assistants have Iowa ties).
5. Be part of an expanded Big 10 that will bring along more opportunities (both compensation and recruiting).

Numbers 3-5 are very interesting, and some of the most compelling arguments I have heard (I don't buy the first two). I wonder if it will be enough to concel out the cons I listed.

The Big Ten is ripe for the picking right now and with a few decent recruiting classes by Pearl he could content right away, how is the so difficult to understand?

Hopefuly you understand how completely insane this is? You have to provide deatils if you honestly believe this. Some of the best coaches in the land are in the Big 10, and no one has ever won this conference easily.

If Bruce Pearl were to join the Big 10 tomorrow, he would only be the (arguably) the 4th best coach in the league to start, possibly lower.

I agree. Izzo, Ryan, Tubby, Matta are all better coaches. You could argue that Weber and Belein (sp?) are better coaches.

IF Pearl came he could come right in and compete within two years and with the exposure of the Big Ten Network, getting recruits would be made a ton easier for him. I think right now (especially with Minnesota's run in this year's tourney) the Big Ten is wide open right now while in the SEC it's Kentucky's world and the other teams are just living in it.

I think two is the only questionable one. This is America. Land of the free and the home of the greedy.

Money will not be a reason. UT can match anything Iowa has and more....I believe they have a $100 Million plus budget.

A reason may be if Mr. Davis is lobbying him to do so and he thinks he owes him one, which I think is a long, long shot at best.

Another reason would be that Bruce just wants to make a change..i.e. restless. I think he could be that type of guy, plus he has a big personality and that can ruffle some boosters feathers.

The last reason I can think of would be that the pressure for success at UT is starting to be more than what Bruce thinks is fair. Managing expectations is critical for anyone to have success at their job and he could think expectations are becoming unmanageable.

I have no factual reasons for him to leave, which is why I think the new coach will be one of his two assistants.

Yeah, seriously. Did I studder?

I disagree 100%. In my opinion there's no comparison between the SEC and Big 10 over the last 20 years in terms of having elite teams.

Here's some numbers to chew on.

SEC NCAA Championships since 1990: 6
SEC NCAA Runner Up: 2

Big 10 NCAA Championships since 1990: 1
Runner Up: 6

Now if we pop out and look at at 30 years the Big 10 becomes much more competitive. But the trend is favoring the SEC here. Let's face it folks... 1 NCAA Title for the Big 10 in last 20 years.

So what exactly are you saying? It's easier to win a National Title in the SEC or the Big Ten is open for a new team to start taking the others to the woodshed?

Does Mr. Davis have any pull in the Iowa athletic department at all? If he does, how?

I think its been noted that Tom Davis and Gary Barta are friends. And obviously living in Iowa City who do you think Tom Davis hangs out with? The students? Probably not he most likely runs in the same circles as most of the higher ups in the University. Its a pretty small town. Sorry I don't have any sources on that. Ill just cite my own powers of reasonable deduction as my source on that.

No I'm saying the SEC produces better elite teams. Teams capable of winning titles. You don't win a title in the SEC... you win a title playing in the NCAA Tournament against all teams.

The SEC has better athletes, better scorers, and thus has won 600% more NCAA Titles over the last 20 years than the Big 10.
