It seems KF and Barta pretty much blew our created image of Iowa football. To a degree, I'm not sure it's ever coming back. Each successive generation has been less interested than those in front of it. This may be the tipping point. Even the KF apologists have to have some degree of remorse in this.
It's the same with our nation. Many have had their naive image of American exceptionalism dashed. I lost mine about 15 years ago doing a lot of work internationally. In our minds we created a world where equality was a given and many just wanted to blame it on inferior ethics or even worse, inferior genetics.
We have a real problem where our dreamed American way of life isn't so safe anymore nor as idealistic. Problems in inner cities didn't really impact many of us, especially in rural Iowa. Now we realize it wasn't as we appeared.
