........................name me who coached Duke right before coach Mike Krzyzewski'. YOU CAN'T!! Driving in to work today, it came across my mind, I couldn't even come close to naming the coach before him. I presume coach K built that program to what it is, similar to what Paterno did at Penn St.

That is all. Carry on!

I can't do it, either. Coach K has been there basically my entire lifetime.. Certainly as long as I can remember. Ditto for Boheim at Syracuse.

Who is the NEXT coach at Duke? My money is on Chris Collins, but who knows. As long as he continues to have the success he's having at NW, the job may be his to lose - if he wants to step into the role of Coach K's successor..

Interesting note. Cameron Indoor Stadium only seats 9,134. It is old. Notice how the rims are hung from the ceiling. The view behind the baskets are completely free of obstruction, which is different but cool. It would be a cool place to play or watch a game.

I've heard it's a must for places to see a game, even if you aren't a Duke fan. I imagine tickets are tough to get though, especially with the lower capacity.

That would be my #1 guess as well. He'd have the resume at a Div 1 program, that is not the easiest to coach at secondary to tradition, recruiting grounds/wars and academic standards.

I only know this because he died in 2016. Bill Foster was the coach before Coach K. Probably most amazing, after coaching Duke to a 24-9 record (I did look this up) and a Regional Final in the NCAA tourney, he left to go coach at South Carolina. That tells you all you need to know about where Duke was in the college basketball landscape back then.

Interesting.

Bill Foster. Who knew.

Found a list:

His predecessor is a name us older Big 10 fans would be familiar with. Interesting, I didn't know this.

I remember Foster took them to the title game against Kentucky in 1978. It was kind of a shock at the time. They beat somebody in the regional final that was supposed to be "hot" at the time. UCLA? Marquette, maybe? I don't think MSU/Magic were expected to go very deep that year, but won the conference. Indiana and Michigan would have been the other Big 10 powers. And maybe Minnesota? I think MSU may have lot to Kentucky? Or maybe Notre Dame? Not sure if that was when BYU had a "mini-run" with Danny Ainge.

Take this for what it's worth, but John Feinstein has stated that both Collins and Wojo have indicated they do NOT want the Duke job whenever Coach K hangs it up. I assume it's probably because they want to create/build their own programs rather than always coach in Coach K's shadow. Can't really blame them. Heck, every coach after Wooden has had to coach in his shadow as well. Coach K is essentially the modern version of Wooden. Apparently it'll be Capel's if he wants it....

This thread reminds me of how much I hate Duke. My wife went to school there so I hear enough about Duke, trust me.

When Duke played Arizona for the NC...I rooted for Arizona because of Lute Olson. She has never forgiven me and banished me to another room to watch the game. Dukies have a long memory and rarely forgive a lapse in loyalty...wait, I think that's women. Dukies are the spoiled rich kids that are full of themselves with self importance. I always get those two confused.

Jon and Deace brought this up a bit in their podcast that I was listening to just a bit ago. They made good points that actually the NW job is very similar to the Duke setting, which is a small private college. I could see Collins staying put at NW as he grew up in Chi town area. I could see him trying to build something similar to Duke. Heck, they would have the same kind of challenges but NW could have an even better local recruiting area.

I believe that was Dick Vitale, but he got fired. In addition to that, a clause in his buyout stated that, if he ever announced on TV, he would never shut the hell up about how big his vitale gets just thinking about Duke.
