Put that coffee down. Better recruiting is NOT the answer.

Oh I would luv to upgrade our players. But if you can't put your best players on the field, or manage the egos of top dawgs, then recruiting issues are just a symptom and the real answer is somewhere else.

Defense - Hardy should've been a full time starter with Meier slimmed down and moved to linebacker. Law should've started ahead of Lowdermilk or Lomax. Powell and Willies should've seen the field so often that Vandy spent all his time on the bench. McCarron at PR ahead of KMM? Are you kidding me!? CJ/Sokol both had more upside than Rudock. Weisman should've been a FB who got more carries than the avg Iowa FB.

Duzey - Canzeri - Powell - Willies - Law - Laron Taylor - Ruben Lile - Malloy - Wadley - Parker - speed ignored; wasted or under-utilized. We need to pay some "occupy" moron to slap GD next time he complains about not having speed. And when KF says, "Because of our talent level we need perfect execution." Someone should ask him which recruits did we steal from Michigan; Nebraska and Wisconsin after they lost their coaches?

Would it be nice to get lots of prep All-Americans? Yep, but most of them bring egos with them. And at Iowa there is room for only 1 ego. And because of that we are permanently limited on the type of recruits we can go after. But even if we were more aggressive in getting superstars, we couldn't serve them coffee, because we don't have closers.

A couple questions...

I saw Law and Sokol mentioned? In the past I might see that you had an argument, but how do guys that are no longer with the program see the field.

Maybe some of these guys with all the speed aren't ready to see more PT... Parker's got potential but I remember a few costly turnovers and I'm still trying to figure out what he was doing on the kick return last week. Not saying he won't be a good player but because he's fast doesn't necessarily mean he's ready for a bigger role.

Barta, Mason and the weak spined fan base are ultimately to blame.

It's true there's probably not another coach in the world that would leave Willies on the sidelines in favor of Iowas pedestrian receiver corp, very very few that would play JR over CJ or feature Wiesman as a tail back and obviously no one in their right mind would hire Greg Davis if the goal is to win games but....

The reason KF can make these eccentric personnel and staff decisions is because he's under no real pressure to win games.

KF is in his own little world where he is paid top dollar to mold young men rather than win games.

The fact that He is still here says everything you need to know about those in charge.

This BS would never be happening if he wasn't already a millionaire and his pay checks depended on it.

We could have won at least 2 more games in 2014 with the players we had. Almost ever year, we lose one (or more) games due to bad coaching.

Better recruiting would help. But the quick fix is already on the sidelines, and this year is a perfect example.

My initial reaction is to disagree with the title of this thread....then I remember 2010:mad: I have to agree that two more wins was very possible with this roster. iSu may have been one of the worst losses is Iowa history considering it was at home and iSu won only one other game. The staff refusing to go to Beathard in the second half of the Nebby game is still puzzling to me as well. Especially when you consider that the staff "opened back up" the qb competition because of it. If they felt that way, why not do something during the game?...you know to win.

Talent does need to get better though. In the past 2 bowl games Iowa has looked like a MAC team going on the road to play a blue blood just for the paycheck and experience.

Our defense, though aided by an injury to Mettenberger, looked fine against LSU. But our offense looked like it was facing a brick wall at the 50 in that game.

Parker had 2 turnovers in a game that we won so they actually weren't costly. The mindset of not playing players that have way more upside because they have a slightly higher risk of a turnover is not only costing us wins, it's costing us any amount of joy watching games where absolutely nothing ever happens. It's boring football.

Playing the safe player is especially loathsome when they make mistakes or turn the ball over as much as the 'risky' player, only without the upside! Vandenberg fumbled a couple of punt returns, and JR of course turned the ball over at least once in each of the last 6 games.

It's both. It's all of the above. Improving one without the other doesn't get us where we want the team. And with Ferentz at the helm along with Davis I don't see that happening....

A very fair question. And I respect that others agree with you.

The reason is because everything is a hypothetical at this point. Sokol and Law were chased off when the Captain made the decision to give them little playing time. Hell, Sokol showed well in spring games and at La Tech. Make he and CJ battle it out in 2013 and maybe he wins the starting job and the depth chart reads Sokol/CJ in 2014. I bet that change gets us at least 1 more win in 2014. How does 8-5 sound compared to 7-6? Sounds pretty good doesn't it.

Regarding Law. I think scout had him as a 4 star. We didn't see enough of him to find out what he could do. And I don't trust the coache to recognize why he was a 4-star.

As for your take that, "Maybe the guys aren't ready to take the field." Well, how many people said that about CJ this year and Weinke in 2012? My point is, when you're losing to the Iowa States on your schedule you're no longer playing for "tomorrow". Canzeri played as a true freshman in a bowl game and looked good. But then Weisman locked down the position. Are you saying we didn't see enough of Canzeri's speed to give him more touches? People said he had fumbelitis. But they also ignore his ability to take it to the house. Wadley and Parker also have that ability. Does Weisman? And let's not pretend Weisman never made mistakes or fumbled.

In the end what you're doing is defending the status quo. As already stated, the status quo got us a worse record than Nebraska every year we played them. That's the same Nebraska we all ridicule as an irrelevant joke. So let me ask you, if they're an irrelevant joke, what does that make us?

You give BB these same players and he would find a way to avoid the mass exodus of Law; Sokol; Willies; Hill; Malloy; Lile; Taylor; and a dozen others who split between Jan and December 2014.

I think it is safe to say that with Biels we at least beat the Clones and finish with 8 wins. Probably more than 8. Kirk had a roster than was better than 7 wins. And those who played football know it.

Worse recruiting must be the answer. All 3 Lbers, the R De and RB. None of those should be starting or even playing at the B10 level. thats 5 of 22 starters that are totally inadequate by any definition.
