PTL Storylines

I also think Pemsl can get a lot better. He has great moves around the basket already and will certainly work on rebounding passing screening and free throws. I don't think he will ever be an outside shooter, but his inside presence will open up defenses for those who are shooters.

He's got such a big body. When he's an upperclassmen, he will bully his way into position and score under the basket a lot. In this age of basketball, I don't want post players shooting 15 footers. I want posts that can score under the hoop and guards that make 3s.

I just wish the PTL would move to a venue that has enough seating to actually accommodate the fans that want to go watch the games. I think we had to stand through about half of the games last year.

Other than that, i always like to watch the newbies and imagine in my head how they're going to come in and tear up the Big 10.

Unless Pemsl sits on his ass all summer which we all know he will not he is going to get better every year. His free throw percentage AS A FRESHMAN isn't a big concern because they will start falling. It's not like his form sucks. If he is never able to knock down an outside shot it's not the end of the world we have more than enough other guys that can. What he does bring is a TOUGH inside presence that finds ways to score and can pass. He reminds me a lot of Eddie Horton and I'll take that type of player on the team any day.

I have suggested multiple times to Chris at the Wells Fargo event center, that they should host a PTL game. He says it is not likely considering they already have the Big 4 Classic and something about the PTL organization. I can't remember exactly, but the gist was that the PTL didn't have much interest in big venues. Does anyone know who leads the PTL organization?

I'm just glad there's AC. I remember covering it at Iowa City West when it was sweltering.

What are you looking forward to seeing most in PTL this year? There are plenty of storylines.

How good is Garza? Can he shoot 3s? Can he play defense?

How good is Nunge? Is he athletic enough to play the 3?

Can Williams, Cook, Pemsl, Wagner improve their jump shots? Free throws?

What is Moss focusing on improving on the offensive end?

Can Dailey find a role on next years team?

Can Bohannon improve his scoring inside the arc? Has his lateral quickness improved?

What is Baer looking to improve this offseason?

What intrigues you the most?

...... Duez Henderson still playing??

Of the two, I'd prefer Cook to be the one to step out to a midrange shot on occasion. If a defender comes out on him there he has the speed to go around them.

As far as Pemsl I hope he can improve his athleticism, defense, and free throws this offseason.

I still am not ruling out the possibility of Cook & Pemsl starting together on the frontline, if both make some strides this offseason. Either way, Pemsl is a nice option of the bench as well.

Agree about an outside shot being more valuable for Cook. His threat to drive and stuff would make it more of a pick your poison situation for a defense. Pemsl's biggest physical strength is behind him literally- his ability to establish position with his large backside. An outside shot doesn't give that another dimension. But a fadeaway would. An outside shot for Pemsl would clear out the lane for Cook if they're playing together. But still think Pemsl is more valuable off the bench at this point- giving all-game continuity to the threat at PF that's going to be the strength of this team.

From your post I am assuming you're thinking Nunge or Garza will be playing the 5? That is the only reason Cook and Pemsel would not be starting together.

Look at the roster. Garza/Kriener and Cook/Pemsl are obviously intended for 5/4 by Fran's recruiting. Wagner was a solution defensively for last year's team but that had limitations. Pemsl may indeed start, but feel we could really use a longer shotblocking body in the middle for defensive purposes. Apparently, Fran does too since he went out and recruited 2 of them.

Pemsl has a big body, but Wagner probably is just as thick and stronger. Wagner is probably an inch or two shorter.Iowa should be much improved overall this coming year.

Lol of course we need a rim protector. I am very excited about both Garza's and Nunge's skill set coming into college, but I am reserved in assuming that either one will be ready or better than the 4 post players that now have at least 1 season of experience. I am willing to reconsider after the PTL.

Wagner & Cook started on the frontline at the end of last year...

Yes but he specifically said Cook and Pemsel at the power forward. That means Wagner at the 5? That would be silly wouldn't it? I think Garza was recruited to be a 5. I think Nunge was brought in to be a 4/5 rotational player like Cook. Kriener is another 4/5 rotational. Pemsel and Wagner should be land locked at the 4. Wagner is undersized for the 5 spot and Pemsel just doesn't do it for me there either.

Ahh... IC what you're saying.

In a perfect world Garza would be good enough to start at the 5. If necessary I think both Cook & Pemsl can handle some minutes at the 5.

I don't see Nunge as a 4/5. I see him more as a 4/3. The only way I would consider him the "5" would be if Wagner were the other big.

The real issue here is we have 7 "bigs" vying for playing time at the 4 & 5. Uhl and Nunge are likely the only ones who could play some minutes at the 3. From what we saw last year it would appear that Cook & Pemsl are our two best bigs, which means it's likely that Fran will have to have them on the court together at least some next year in order to get the bast players on the court.

We may see Garza start at 5 or Nunge at 4/3, with Pemsl ending the game. Fran has shown precedence for this kind of roster management. But, to get back to the PTL implications, seeing Garza dominate the boards this summer or Nunge do his best Uthoff impression might help indicate if these scenarios are possible in November.

Nunge is at least 6'9. Looks like 6'10 to me. I think that is way to big for the 3 spot. Just saying.

Ya we will have a better idea of the rotations after the PTL.
