PTL Storylines

What are you looking forward to seeing most in PTL this year? There are plenty of storylines.

How good is Garza? Can he shoot 3s? Can he play defense?

How good is Nunge? Is he athletic enough to play the 3?

Can Williams, Cook, Pemsl, Wagner improve their jump shots? Free throws?

What is Moss focusing on improving on the offensive end?

Can Dailey find a role on next years team?

Can Bohannon improve his scoring inside the arc? Has his lateral quickness improved?

What is Baer looking to improve this offseason?

What intrigues you the most?

Like every year - the new guys. I think we know what we have with a lot of em... I think Cook will make a huge stride this season.

when does PTL ramp up? Is it different this year with the team taking a trip? Also, off topic a bit - but I seriously feel like the last trip over seas the team took - helped at the beginning of the year as far as cohesion and totally HURT them at the end of the year because they ran out of gas and were spent. - I think that was 13/14 when we lost 6 out of our last 7 and made the first four. I hope Fran learned from that a little and maybe goes in this season with some plans to keep the guys fresh.

1. I want to see what Garza looks like. Unfortunately PTL isn't a great barometer for defense but I still want to see how big he looks against our current players and how well he moves out there.

2. I want to see if Cook can develop that mid range shot. If he can shoot it with some sort of consistency he will be a extremely tough cover.

3. I want to get another look at Dailey. Our backcourt is pretty thin and I think he could help. If he is a good defender, and can hit 3s, I think he will find some minutes.

It looks like PTL starts June 18th.

I think Fran will certainly learn from that experience, and I think likely having 13 guys who are good enough to play will also help.

Uhh.... all of the above. Lol. If I have to pick 1, I'm going off board with Dom Uhl. I am most interested to see what improvements he has made and what his confidence and aggressiveness looks like. Something about strong chains and weak links. I am expecting a lot from Dom in his senior year. Time to pay up young man. I guess the same could be said for Mr Williams. I will be watching both of these guys closely. If they both improve I think we have a pretty damned good team.

Wouldn't it be more like 15? 13 scholarship guys Connor and Till.

1) Garza- I expect that he will dominate the boards in the PTL if he has a chance to contribute early in the fall. Can he protect the rim?
2) Dailey- is he stronger? Can he be a more aggressive player all-around?
3) Cook and Pemsl- boards
4) Nunge- How much like Uthoff is he? Can he be a rim protector?
4) Wagner and Williams- do their outside shots show any improvement? That could determine their usage this fall.
5) How does Connor (assuming he plays in the PTL) look vs this competition?

It would be nice to take a look at Connor against some college level competition. I haven't heard if he playing or not, he may still be playing baseball?

It will be interesting to see if he can join us on the overseas trip as well.

If Connor can play in the PTL and go to Europe, I suspect he will. But that will likely depend on the baseball practice schedule about which I have no clue. Jon? Rob?

Connor will still be playing baseball for IC West this summer (regular season games through July 11, then the playoffs). Prime Time games are scheduled for Sundays and Thursdays (from June 18 through July 23) which are normally not high school baseball game days. It will be interesting to see if Connor does play any PTL games this year.

I haven't heard for sure. Baseball for West High will be his top priority this summer. The Trojans return a lot of talent from last year's state runner-up squad.

I just echo what a lot of you have mentioned here. The newbies are always fun to see and get a bit of a feel for. I'll be curious to see if Cook works on his mid range jumper. If he can get a Tim Duncan type 15 footer added to his game he could absolutely dominate college basketball.

Pemsl I'm afraid pretty much is who he is already. I don't see him and his game evolving a whole lot more than where it is. I hope he can improve his free throw shooting and maybe get a mid range game like Cook needs to also but the type of stroke that he has just doesn't really seem to translate to it. So we'll see. But I love what he brings to the table overall for sure.

I'd like to see JBo and see if he's been able to put some good muscle weight on and if he's worked on his overall athleticism. I know he doesn't have the highest of ceilings athletic wise. But it's all the more reason why he needs to maximize what he has.

Moss. To me his plate is the one that just got bigger substantially. Even though he started a ton last year he wasn't really looked at as having a big time role. Not this year he can't have any more of those games where he plays the first 4-6 mins and then disappears. So his confidence and how he plays will interest me.

Krieners game interests me in that he's a big body and he has some skills. I think the more court time he sees the better he'll get. It's tough to play 2-3 min stretches and be expected to have a huge impact every time.

Some have mentioned Dailey but I don't think he'll be more than the 12/13th man again. I don't see him playing meaningful mins. And if he is we're in trouble.

I think Pemsl was a pretty good free throw shooter in high school. Both Cook and Pemsl were just true freshmen last year, and they should be more comfortable this year. Moss has the chance to be one of the main guys this year, and hopefully, he will be. Dailey is obviously gifted, and I'm sure a year of weight work will help him. He had to many guys ahead of him last year. Kriener looked a little lost at times last year. With a years experience and weight work it will be interesting to see how he does. He will be improved, but it will be hard for him to beat out Cook and Pemsl. I saw a recent picture of the team, and JBo looked like a boy amongst the giants. He is a good player though.

I would like to see some attention to free throws over the summer. We missed quite a few that would have increased a lead or put us ahead in some games. And better attention to perimeter defense. We gave up too many threes last year.

Newbies – Agree – It will be interesting to see how Garza/Nunge interact with the established veterans and how quickly they get playing time, if at all.

Cook – Agree – If he can develop that 12-15 foot jumper, there’s no telling how big an impact he will have on next year’s team.

Pemsl – Disagree – Is it possible he won’t progress? Yes, after all, he played with JBo on the AAU circuit. The fact the two of them were able to make an impact at the same time is not surprising. But to say he has reached his ceiling is outlandish. I believe there’s plenty of upside for him.

JBo – Neutral – I don’t disagree with what you say, I’m just not sure I agree either. He could very easily progress and become a great point guard. Even if he doesn’t, and he only plays up to what he did this past season, that’s still pretty good.

Moss – Disagree – Everyone’s plate is bigger. From Dom Uhl down to the incoming freshmen. A lot more is going to be expected from everybody on the team, and that’s a good thing.

Kriener – Agree – He’s got a lot of up side. He needs more than 2-3 minutes per game. In fact, he needs closer to 10 minutes per game.

Dailey – Disagree – If Doc plays significant minutes this year it’s because he’s earned it and he has taken a giant step forward in his playing ability. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: He should red-shirt this year. He needs to work on the weights and get another year working on the scout team, ala Baer.

Just my $.02 .. .. GO HAWKS!!!

Edit - corrected a spelling error. Oops .. ..

You're new so you probably don't know it, but bringing up perimeter defense in a currently civil thread is begging for a disaster. I'm pretty sure under the Patriot act it is considered treason. I just pray that you have not already attracted the attention of Hawk5656.

Anyways...Cheers. Welcome aboard.

Pemsl- I just don't think he'll get a ton better. His game is what it is. He's a great screener. Unselfish passer. But the type of shot he has just doesn't lend itself to being very good outside 10 feet. He had such a lack of confidence in it that he pretty much never took any. Most of his shots were within arms reach of the rim. Which is great and he had a really high shooting % because of it. If he were to have the better mid range jumper going between he and Cook the next yr or ever I'll be surprised. I'm not saying it to bash him just my 2 cents as well.

JBo will get better I think. His offense is pretty darn good if he weren't to change a thing I agree. I just think with increased muscle and athleticism he could go to the basket some more and defend better.

The role Moss will have is going to change a ton. He was kind of an energizer bunny during the first few mins of the game but hardly ever leaned on in the 2nd halves of games or in crunch time. That will be a big noticeable difference between winning games or not. The only player I can see having a larger role increase is Baer. Yet if he were to stay coming off the bench that wouldn't surprise me either. He's a bit of a wild card.

Uhl I left off cause I just don't know what to think about him now. I'd be totally guessing. If he does anything more than last year I guess we'll take that as a positive. I have no expectations of many meaningful mins from him though. I think the younger guys have all/will all leap frog him.

Dailey looks like a toothpick. I'll be surprised if he plays much at all other than garbage time much like this year.

I also think Pemsl can get a lot better. He has great moves around the basket already and will certainly work on rebounding passing screening and free throws. I don't think he will ever be an outside shooter, but his inside presence will open up defenses for those who are shooters.

I definitely agree we are going to need a more consistent Moss next year. There will likely be nights that Jbo's shot won't be on and we will need Moss to go get us 15 points.

As far as Dailey goes you are certainly entitled to your opinion. I would just say that we in essence know what we have in Ellingson and Williams, if Dailey can pass them by for minutes I think that would be a great thing.

I feel like because of the success the other freshman had last year people are kind of giving up on him. Quite frankly if Devyn Marble as a freshman was on the team last year, he would have rode the pine just like Dailey did. It's kind of interesting, everyone wanted to compare Moss to Marble, I actually think Dailey is a better comparison, as both have that long lanky frame. Moss is more of a slash/shoot/pass mentality in that order whereas Marble was more shoot/pass/slash.

Not every kid is ready to contribute as a freshman. Our team needs perimeter defense and is thin on guards. I think Maishe can help in both of those areas, that's why I'm really hoping he develops.
