PSU predictions

I’m surprised no one else has put up predictions so I guess I’ll start.
125 Clark vs Megaludis- Probably the match I’m anticipating the most. Yeah we’ve seen Clark beat some high level guys but there is still some unknown there to see if he can do it consistently at least in my mind. He looked very tired against Buffalo so that was a little concerning. Megaludis is actually one of my favorite college guys to watch. He’s an ornery little bastard and goes out to score points. Last year vs McD was just an amazing battle. Hawks need an upset here, don’t think they get it though PSU- 3-0

133 Ramos vs Guilibon (or maybe Conway) I assume after last year’s result it will be Guilibon. He hasn’t really lived up to his hype yet really although it’s still early. He’s a solid kid for sure but ramos will be too much for him. Would love to get 6 but I think we get MD instead. Ia 4-3
141 Dwieza vs Retherford- I was really looking forward to this match (and still am) but things definitely changed for me Sunday watching ZR beat Steiber. I still feel like Dwieza can win, I’m just much less confident. Both guys good on top, getting the takedowns here will be huge. PSU w/ the DEC 6-4
149 Kelly vs English This is a hard one for me. I want so bad to think Kelly has turned the corner, but my eyes tell me he hasn’t. English (I’m assuming he goes, it won’t be Alton) is solid for sure but very beatable. My brain says English wins but my heart says Kelly. I’ll go with my brain. PSU leads 9-4

157 DSJ vs Alton or Volrath. Word is Alton may be back for this dual, but I’d be surprised if this dual was the first time to run him out there this year. Especially with Volrath wrestling so well. So I think it’s DSJ w/ a DEC over Volrath. MD is possible, but that kid is tough so I’ll say just the DEC. PSU 9-7

165- Taylor vs Moore Obviously Taylor will win and most likely by bonus points. That’s what he does, but I’m interested to watch this. Moore has wrestled him like a total *itch in the past. He needs to sack up and at least fight him or I will be really disappointed. Taylor by MD PSU 13-7

174 Evans vs Brown Huge swing match here. Evans won a nail biter last year, that was huge. But I think brown just gets better every time I see him. If Iowa wants to win we need this match, but don’t think we get it. 16-7 PSU
184 Ruth vs Lofthouse. Not much to say. Ruth, prob by bonus. MD 20-7 PSU

197 McIntosh vs Brooks. Could see Burak here, but not sure, I’m guessing Brooks. Kind of curious to see MM after the redshirt year and he’s been off the mat recently. Maybe I’m in the minority but I think Brooks comes out and wrestles well here and gets the upset for the hawks. PSU 20-10

HWT Telford vs Lawson. This one concerns me a little mostly just because Big Bob has been off the mat a lot this year so far with his knee and Lawson has wrestled better. But I feel like we’ll get the win here regardless. PSU 20-13

I know, I know. Not a real hawk friendly prediction but I tried to go w/ what I think will happen as opposed to what I want to happen. but if iowa were to just swing one match then it’s 17-16 and bonus points could be huge.
125, 141, 149, 174, 197 all going to be great matches where upsets could happen in my mind. Can’t wait to go!

Great post. I unfortunately have been burnt by drinking some of the Brands Kool-Aide

I'll have mine up on BHGP soon.

I would say you are right on. The only difference I would say would be Ramos and Evans. I can see Ramos with a pin in this dual. I believe that after his loss a couple of weeks ago he will be more focused than ever and the lights will be real bright this night and he will be out to make a point.
As for Evans, if this meet was at Happy Valley I would agree, but with the match in Iowa City i do believe Evans win this with a late td or escape.

Great post. I think you are right with one exception, Evans wins in Carver. Evans and Ramos seem to bring Hawkeye fans to their feet. Going to be a great dual. Lofthouse has a chance if Ruth finds the Ped Mall on Saturday afternoon. This could be an instant classic.

My thoughts are not far off from yours.

25- Clark is slick, fast, high motor but upredictable and vulernable. Excellent rider with a heart/will to win. Mega is an experienced guy that doesnt make mistakes. Mega has great flexability that cant be matched by many. Mega dec
33- Ramos is angry right now.Tony by MD.
41- Both are great riders. ZR is better on their feet. ZR dec
49- Kelly is Iowa's only hope at 49 now. He gets my full support. Grind it out 3-2 type victory at home over the backup.
57- STJ by dec. It wont be pretty but Derek will prevail.
65- Taylor by md. It will be close to a tech but Nick will battle off that 15th point.
74- People call Evans the underdog. BS. Both have improved tremendously.Heavy heavy hands in this match. Stache by dec at home 3-2
84- Lofthouse will get thrown around but he will hold it to a dec as a senior at home.
97- Burak/Brooks will both lose by dec to MM
HVY- Big Bob will win by dec.

Awesome write up, CR. That's how I see it going down as well. Huge emphasis on Clark and Evans matches. If we get one of those, it's going to be really close (1 point meet). If we get them both, I think we win. Looking forward to Pin's thoughts too on BHGP.

yeah I agree. 174 is probably the biggest toss up match of the entire dual. It's basically 50/50. The only thing that would surprise me in this one would be if someone one by 4+ points.

Excellent breakdown CR! The only match we differ on is at 197 where I predict MM will pull out a close win.
Clark and Evans matches are huge swing matches and if they can pull out victories the Hawks will be in business.
Just hopeful that Moore and EL do not get beat by more then major decisions. Also think Lawson will give Telford a much tougher match then some are thinking. Hopefully Carver magic will lead the Hawks to a victory!!

I agree but feel like Jeva's match is will be huge too. We NEED this match to try to offset the bonus points at 65 and 84. I'm not confident at all. Here's how I see it:

PSU:
25, 41, 49, 65 (5pt TF), 84 (MD) 97

Iowa
33 (MD), 57, 74, HWT

PSU 21
Iowa 13

Ironside on the radio right now. Says that Both Altons are out. He is disappointed as he would have liked to see us wrestle them coming off of these injuries. Evans -v- Brown, we have troubles finishing shots against Brown. Bonus points will be huge. Calling for a pin out of Ramos.

First of all, I think our guys (I don't know if it's pressure from the coaches, fans, or both) put too much emphasis on the team score. Our underdogs go out to keep scores tight rather than pulling the upset. This is evident in matches like 149, 165, and 184 last year. Let's go back to the days of 10 individual battles and team score be damned! The one thing I noticed in the PSU/OSU match, is that the PSU underdogs/backups went after it. We should not be predicting (some are hoping only) majors for our 4th ranked 165 and 2nd ranked 184 wrestlers. Who cares if you lose, make those guys fight!

125- I think Clark gets the first takedown. I think he can ride out Mega, but when the match gets later and the pressure is tight, I think Mega's experience will turn into a Clark mistake. 0-3

133- Some are saying that Ramos is trying different things, well go back to what works stud. If conaway, probably a major (I think he turtles up). However, I think Guilbon will walk himself into getting pinned. Guilbon seems to be a hard-nosed wrestler who likes to rough up the competition. I think he man-ups and goes after Ramos... and then counts the lights. 6-3

141- Prior to Sunday, I thought this was a toss up and thought CHA would prevail for Josh. Now there's no way. Retherford is awesome on his feet (got to steiber multiple times), and JD is terrible at neutral defense. I can see a scenario where Retherford chooses down in the 2nd (has to be the 2nd), and if JD gets some tilts, might be able to choose top in the 3rd and maybe pull this out. Big if, and I don't see it happening. 6-6

149- I'm a big fan (to a fault) of Kelly. I don't care who they throw out there. If it's English, an out of shape Alton (has to be an out of shape Alton) or the 3rd stringer they used on Sunday, Kelly is going to get it done. Don't ask for details, because I have none. 9-6

157- All comes down to if DSJ gets the first td. If he does, I can see him working his way to a major, regardless if it's Alton or not (he's decked Alton before). If he's coming from behind, he'll simply get the decision. I'm going with senior leadership on the big stage. 13-6

165- I like Moore and I hope he fights. I see a scenario where if he is somehow able to get the first takedown, he'll stay in the match and "only" get majored. I'm guessing he gives up a quick takedown (all momentum will be lost due to intermission) and is quickly tilted to death. 13-11

174- I like Evans, but his neutral offense just isn't good enough for the top of his weight. His only hope is to get in a scramble situation like last year and end up on top. Brown will stay out of these situations after learning the hard way last year. I'm guessing it goes something along the lines of 0-0 first period. Evans with a 1-0 lead after the second. Tries to put the legs in in the third, gets reversed and loses on riding time. 13-14

184- I think EL goes out and gets a quick takedown on a disinterested (and rusty) Ruth. Ruth gets interested in a hurry and proceeds to get the major. 13-18

197- If Burak had been going for a few matches, I think he would win. However, I see an undersized Brooks going out and giving it his all but losing to the bigger MM. 13-21

HWT- If he needed it, I think Telford would go for (and get) the pin. However, with the meet no longer in doubt, he keeps his knee safe and squeaks out a snoozer. 16-21

This would help in the team race, but it'd be nice for DSJ to get a little competition.

How much separation is there between Burak and Brooks? Brooks has done a decent job filling in, would it be beneficial to keep him going against McIntosh? Also, I wonder how much McIntosh has been able to practice while being out...could he get gassed? Just thinking Brooks has had more matches and may be better prepared. Again, I'm not sure how much better Burak is than Brooks, just curious.

I like the idea of letting brooks go on full feed and letting Burak redshirt. then have them both in the line up next year. makes all the sense in the world to me.

So what is holding Burak out? Is it really a skin issue? Dont most skin issues clear up by now? I for one still want Burak in the lineup this year. Brooks has had some good effort matches but do you really think he will score more points at Big tens and Nationals than NB? Just curious
