Portal needs or wants

What are the biggest needs in the portal? Lb and dl? Cover corner? Or qb, wr, ol? Any thoughts? I don’t mind sully but we need a back up with some mobility. Maybe we have it. I think rb might be ok. Wr seems like we could add one
on d I think maybe Allen and max could use some depth. Eppy coming next year but it’s hard for a freshman. Seems like one cb, lb and a couple dl are needed. Maybe we have them and just need to develop them.
schedule looks rough next year so we might need to load up some depth

I don't expect them to do much in the portal since they are going to have to punt people off the team to meet the new roster size requirements.

As far as needs go for being a better then decent team goes we need a top notch QB. Preferably a mobile one. Even if Sullivan can be good enough to do it we need another body regardless. It doesn't seem like Lainez is gonna be it and I'll be surprised if he doesn't transfer closer to home

The D is getting almost totally revamped. Lots of needs there at every level. We might be good at LB we've recruited well there. We'll be young but should have potential. (Kuetter I believe is coming back) DTs seems like a huge hole we had to play Black and Graves a ton of snaps this yr. So I suspect we'll hit portal hard for DTs and DBs both.

Offensively besides Qb I'd say Oline. We are losing the whole left side of of it from the center on. We'll need that big time

Do you think our QB room gets it done next year?
Who's all gonna even be in it? I suspect Lainez will be gone and we're already down a qb with Resar moving to WR. It's just Sully and Shaggy and the new Sullivan coming in I believe. So we'll be hitting the portal hard for no less then 1 qb and if Lainez is gone probably 2.

Being a D1 program with only 1 returning scholarship QB on the roster isn't an ideal situation to be in that's all I know.. Remanence of the BF tenure is what we have to thank for this situation.

Thanks. That's pretty much why I was asking. It would be great to get a reasonably decent quarterback. I hope Sully is solid.

Isn't there two or three QB's coming in as freshmen. The next question would be is if there are there are new QB's coming in as freshmen then who recruited them? I may not like the answer.

am I missing something- but the scholarship are going up by 20?

edit- I didn't realize essentially you can't have walk ons anymore?

You can have walk ons technically, but you won’t at the bigger P4 level.

Right now it’s unlimited players, 85 scholarships.

Going forward it’s 105 players, all allowed to be on scholarship.

This will eliminate the walk on as we know it.

How will the Hawks get safeties into the NFL then?
The same way Hanks, Robinson, Cooks, Bowen, Sanders, Considine, Godfrey, Spievey, Sash, Prater, Bernstine, Hyde, Hooker, Stone, Belton, Moss, and DeJean did maybe? By offering DBs scholarships?

Sully being solid would cure much of our ails in the short term for next yr. That's for sure. Keeping him healthy and developing are a must. He seems capable to me I love what his legs bring to the table. We'll see...

There are good teams that prosper with a Freshman QB. But then it is not ideal. But we need a good young QB who can start for at least two years when ready.

What's crazy to me is of all the DBs and safeties we've had that we've put in the league XN is by far the highest recruit we've gotten. Bernstine I believe was a high 4 star that had a lot of offers coming out of DSM. But unless XN has himself an unreal senior season he's gonna find getting to the NFL tough to do.

I've seen XNs weight listed at 212/215. If that's dead on I'd say the best thing for him to do would be to put on 10-15 lbs this off season and become a LB. He's just not fast/quick/instinctual enough for playing safety. He can sure hit though. Not sure how feasible that sort of thing would be to do at this stage of his career but that might his best shot at a post college career. Cause if he's not fast enough for college he's definitely not fast enough for the pros

I think Indiana has demonstrated a portal strategy that Iowa could emulate.
Find good, underrated talent at non-P4 schools who are looking to 'move up' so to speak.
Rather than expensive and questionable highly rated recruits moving down from Top Tier schools.

I think the number one problem for XN was the hype when he was in high school. In fairness to him it was way overblown and that's not really his fault. He's a good starting P4 safety, and I think people would be a lot higher on him if he came in relatively unheralded. It's a bias effect.

Needs in order:

1. Head Coach
2. QB that is mobile AF
3. WRs that are quick and don't need to buy a pair of hands from Johns Market
4. Corner and DB
